I totally understand your point, but I'm not saying they shouldn't progress. I'm saying that if they want to do that, if they want to change Bugs to Camaros, don't use the same characters. If they can't get the rights to do it right, don't do it at all. Put it a generation ahead, or even rewrite the story from scratch. But if they're going to use the original names to cash in on fanboy nostalgia, they should do whatever it takes to get their hands on the original designs, or a close representative. Anything else would shortchange said fanboy.

Yeah, but no one's complaining about Ironhide not being a red van, Starscream not being an F-15, or...drumroll please...Megatron not being a six-inch long Naxi pistol.
It's been twenty years. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the concepts that the original cartoon presented...but it's been twenty years. As long as Bumblebee is a little yellow runt, it should be fine.

The VW Bug is more in tune with Bumblebee's personality. He was the little guy, the least powerful. While everyone else are heavy duty trucks and sports cars, he's the little VW Bug. It's all about him being an underdog. That's something that a muscle car Camero doesn't bring across. It also doesn't fit the name 'Bumblebee' as well as a VW BUG does.

But the movie wouldn't get people to buy the new Camero if Bumblebee was a VW. I'm guessing GM spent a lot of money to have all but one of the Autobots be vehicles from various GM brands, and no two of them from the same brand either.

Not to be a nerd (in this thread? hard to believe) but this was one aspect of the original cartoon I never got. A beetle is a totally different type of insect from a bumblebee. Bumblebees are related to wasps and ants. (Um...yeah...my roomamte's dad had a PhD in...insectology or whatever...I learned a lot about bugs. So pardon me for being picky.) And 'bug' is considered slang for cicadias and aphids (maybe crickets? I can't remember). So, why is a 'VW Bug' that big of a deal.
And don't get me started on the 'dinobots'. Swoop isn't a dinosaur. You can make allowences for three-fingered T-rexs in those older cartoons, but Swoop's not even a dinosaur. I'm just saying.

Bumblebee was a reference to his color, I believe.
Also, he eventually became Goldbug.

Don't worry Rob, I'll defend you. With my awesome Capitalization Skills. Rob's not suggesting they do a complete overhaul of the series. And the sex change comparison is just silly. Although, if Starscream were a girl, it would explain all the sexual tension... I just watched Miami Vice about a week ago. Besides the fact that my favorite pistol and a sweet-looking car were used (and what cop can afford a Ferrari?) the movie was utter garbage. My sister, normally a calm and level-headed woman who grew up watching the TV show, was practically having a fit on the sofa. "You didn't get that angry when we watched the Ricky Bobby movie." "That was different! We knew that was going to suck! This had potential to be good." And this 20-year old TV series did have potential. First of all, not that much needed to be updated -- there's still drug trafficing in South Florida. Hell, you can do the show or movie twenty years from now, and everything would be the same, except the cars and the guns. And it's not like the original was the Greatest Show on Earth. ("You have to be ice cold to survive that place, and you're not even cool. You're red hot." And before you complain that I've said that quote before, give me a break. My Uncle Bob's in the episode, so I watch it all the time. He co-starred with Ron Pearlman.  ) In an ideal world, the movie could have easily surpassed the TV show in quality. So, basically, as everyone warmed me before we rented the movie...the movie sucked, which is a shame because the idea was good and Jamie Fox can act. I don't know how they managed to make the dialouge worse, but they did. Sweet Jesus on a whole-wheat creacker. So, I'm trying to say that updates are needed, but there are one or two more ingredients that will really decide if the movie sinks or floats. Plot, for one. So, really, Megatron can be a purple tank, Bumblebee can be a can opener, as long as the story's engaging, I'm set. That, and someone should say the word 'shit'. Question for all of you concerned about the changed: what if they made a GIJoe movie? Let's face it, you go to the airport wearing a Cobra mask, you're going to get your ass busted by someone (although, that would make an awesome 'Robot Chicken' bit). I know squat about GIJoe, but wouldn't they have to make some serious updates. First of all, we're won the Cold War. Second...it's a movie about terrorists. But I didn't watch GIJoe or read the comics, and I saw the Goldenbug thing. I think he died near the end..near when Optimus came back from the dead (boy that was weird). The oddest part was it was very close to the end of the series, so it didn't make any sense.
Then again, a lot of things didn't make sense.

the 1960s batman was this jokey, bafoonish guy in a movie filled with dancing scenes, horrific effects, ridiculous storylines, and a can of shark repellant. pretty day-and-night different to the maniacle leg-breaking "surgeon" from DKR, or the believably ass kicking dark avenger from batman begins; as were those to the super-friends batman, and that the the BTAS batman.
regardless of how drastically different they were, i enjoyed every instance, cuz they were all independantly good stories, with their own context.

This is Transformers. This ain't Casablanca. There will not be a sled named Rosebud anywhere in this picture. Fuck Micael Bay directly in his plot. Fuck him hard. Me, I don't even care if there IS a curse word in this movie. I want my sixteen wheeler, my gun, two tape decks, robotic dinosaurs, jets, and a mutha fuckin' Volkswagen Beetle.
Anything else is like making Superman blond or Wolverine a girl. It isn't an update, updates move things forward to the present. Please tell me how making Bumblebee a Camaro shows any bit of progression.

The characters of G.I. Joe have been around since World War II. They're not really confined to any one war or period. And the fact that the movie is about terrorists is only more the reason it should be done now. I think it can be done without the airport scene.

Seriously. I meant to post this earlier, but the board was being cranky. I just got a new cell phone last week, and this one has a nice little mic to record sounds in. Which is great, because I can set the sounds as ringtones. So I have my friend going "It's me, pick up your phone" when she calls.
Since I joked about wanting that 'Roll Out' phrase for my cell, I hopped over to the movie webpage, turned up my speakers, and recorded the sounds. Since I didn't want to hear it all the time, I just set it for text messages...

...Which was stupid. Because I did all this the night before the big Gator vs Buckeyes game (hope you enjoy the taste of defeat, Ohio). Now, I went to bed early, becaue I had to get up at six. And there was no way I was going to watch part of the game, so I just assumed I'd find out the next day.
Nope. My sweet fellow allumi decided to text message me...every thirty or forty minutes or so. So, at around ten that night, I'm drifting off...

 Again, it's different, but again, I kind of like the updated look. G1 fans, you may get out your PP8s and shoot me now. Speaking of PP8, in celebration of the new job, my dad's going to take me to the gun range (I know, he has an odd way of saying "I'm proud of you"). I think I'll go and see if I can rent a Megatron gun, just to see how it shoots.
