I really enjoyed the first 5 or 6 Archives due to their relative charm and silver age flair, but when the fanfic writers started taking over like Jim Shooter..they just went to crap..now they are just pathetic.

Seriously, can anyone defend their continued existence other than making a few 10,000's of dollars for DC???

What is the purpose of their having a title and place in the DCU other than trademark and copyright law?

There is quite a bit of goodwill involved in the characters. There is the famous story that when Legion was to be cancelled in the 80s, Stan Lee wrote to DC as a fan in protest.

Personally, they've never really done anything for me, although the concept of a huge team of characters is kind of cool.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I'd read the fucking thing. I'd rather gargle I just like big groups. All-Star Squadron is the other one which comes to mind.

There was an idea being touted years ago that the JLA should consist of every character in the DCU. I kind of liked the idea despite the propensity for it to be a wank fest, because you'd have occasions where the focus would be on obscure characters, and other occasions where you'd have the full team of a hundred or so characters in a situation.

I've liked what I've read of the Paul Levitz/Keith Giffen era from the 80's. To me it's up there with the New Teen Titans. The Great Darkness Saga is a classic and an example of a great superhero saga. I've always been curious about the darker "five years later" era, with art by a more stylistically evolved Keith Giffen, but haven't really read anything from that. I like the cover with an older Cosmic Boy walking in the debris, it represents a lot.

I have zero interest in the last few years (Legion Lost and all), but I gotta admit the new Mark Waid/Barry Kitson series looks awesome to me. I like the way Kitson's art has evolved, plus Waid's new concept for the series is interesting. Of course, I wouldn't know if it's good or not because we don't get those comics here in any legal way... but, uh, if somehow I'd read the series I'd recommend issues 2 or 3...

It's a gay comic. The gays like it.

Well, we used to, when it was good.

It was that whole "Cosmic Boy male stripper costume," wasn't it?

Could be, could be. I always hated that costume 'cause it seemed really outta character for him to show off that much flesh.

But in all seriousnes...I think gays like the Legion because its concept offers the promise of acceptance, openeness, and tolerance for gays.

I agree. Also liked that the group aged & somehow always stayed a bit older than me. Because of the group size you also had characterization that wasn't available in other titles. Characters died, lost powers, got married, had kids. They had the first woman leader, first drug story & Matter-eater lad!

For quite while it was DC's biggest letter getter & enjoyed being second in sales (Titans was #1) Even today Legion Fandom is something special. It enjoys several APAs & message boards. (even Rob gave the Legion their own subcategory here on the damn boards) Considering all that, it would be foolish of DC just to give up on the title.

The "Five Years Later" storylines were fucking brilliant, Mxy! If you ever get the chance, pick them all up. Having even a little knowledge of the old Legion stories will bring you great delight in seeing how life plays out (or doesn't) for each character. Highly recommended.

Everything afterwards has been hit-or-miss. The post-Legion Lost series started really strong, with fresh ideas and interesting takes on 31st Century-meets-20th characters (Ra's Al-Ghul!). But, it went downhill pretty quick. This new series is, so far, decent. Still, it has a hint of that Waid-wank that will probably quickly turn me completely off to the title...

I have to agree. It has an experimental feel to it at times, but I'm one of those who staunchly argue that Giffen and the Bierbaums really did love the Legion.

For me, mostly miss. Though I thought DnA gave it a game effort and LEGION LOST is a solid effort if viewed as a self-contained story, but DnA were saddled with, IMHO, a lousy concept. I did love Coipel's art, though.

From the issues I've skimmed through I've noticed that every single page in that series is in the same Watchmen like nine-panel distribution. Is that a plus? Doesn't it get old?

The 9 panel grid was way overused. If he had only used it more sparingly I would have enjoyed it better.

I didn't mind the campbell soup version from the early 90's..it had a charm to it, but I think that's because it was a reboot...and basically reworked the stories I already liked...

Probably because Abnett & Lanning were writing the first issues of The Legion.

I like alot of the stuff Abnett & Lanning put out. I'm enjoying Majestic's new title.

The layout could get a bit overdone. However, the story itself was so good, I rarely noticed. Of course, keep in mind that I bought the first 30 issues of the series at once, in the dollar bin at a comic shop. So, I didn't really absorb it bit-by-bit like a monthly, but, rather, as one big epic storyline.

Yeah, I wholeheartedly recommend if you're going to delve into the Giffbaum era of THE LEGION that you buy the first 25-30 issues and read them consecutively. The story will make more sense that way.

I guess I read my first Legion comic back in the early 70s...one of those big 100 page/60 cent joints that came out back then...1 new story, 2 reprints and some other stuff...like capsules of the origins and powers of the members.

Hold on...let me check the issue #....

I'm back. Issue #205. "The Legion of Super Executioners" (new tale). Story by Cary Bates, art by Mike Grell.
The entire Legion has been brainwashed by some up-to-no-goodnik and only Superboy, Ultra Boy and Lana Lang as the Insect Queen(!) were left to save the day.

"The Outcast Legion/The Forgotten Legion" from some Adventure Comics whose issue numbers I can't be arsed to look up right now. Story by E Nelson Bridwell, Art by Curt Swan
This was the one where Superboy and Supergirl were forced to quit the Legion because of the Earth had been surrounded by a cloud a green K. Shrinking Violet implanted a tiny piece of the stuff in their brains to make them forget about the Legion. Their replacements were Sir Prize and Miss Terious (Star Boy and Dream Girl in disguise) The story features appearances by The Legion of Super Pets, The Substitute Legion, The White Witch, Evillo and the Devil's Dozen and a young Mr. Mxyzptlk. And of course, in the end, the green K cloud was overcome and the Supes kids were back in the hizzy.

There had to be like 60 different characters combined in this book. That year I went on a cross country drive with my dad that summer and that was one of the books I had with me. I must have read it about fifty times in the back seat of the car during the two week trip. That was my first exposure to the Legion and kicked off a love for the comic that I still have to this day.

I've suffered thru bad stories, bad art, Baxter paper prices, cancellations and re-boots but, I'm still here. I have every single issue of every incarnation of the Legion since the Superboy comic became Superboy and The LSH with issue #197 in 1973. I have all the archives and about 50 or 60 of the orginal Adventure Comics featuring the group. My lifetime comic goal is to collect all the original appearances of the Legion in Adventure Comics...even though some of the stories were bullshit.

I'm a fanboy...what can I say?

Even after all that, I can't exactly explain my love for the characters. Maybe it was the diversity of the book...even though there was only one black guy in the book and he was the stereotypical "Angry Black Guy" and disappeared after a few issues.

Maybe it was because they were just teen-agers at a time when I was just a kid...even though a couple of them got married at what was probably 17 and started families.

Maybe it was the art. In the 70s/early 80s, Mike Grell, Dave Cockrum, Jim Starlin and others held the same appeal for me as Alex Ross, Bryan Hitch and John Cassaday do for me today.

Maybe it was being able to find a full run of the 5 Year Gap books at a local con after I'd been away from comics for 10 years and marvelling at the evolution of Giffen's art.

Maybe it was the subtle evolution of the characters or the interesting factoids about ther homeworlds or the inter-team romances or the supporting characters or the backdrop of the 30th century or the invention of Interlac or Darkseid's appearance in the mid 80s or....whatever.

I probably will never be able to adequately explain why I love the Legion to and non- or casual fan. Those that share my affection for the book will understand.

I'll be here no matter how many reboots, no matter how many shitty stories with bad ideas. I don't care if some of you think the new Waid/Kitson book sucks. I'm enjoying it. And even if I didn't like it, I'd still buy it becuase a shitty Legion is better than no Legion.

LONG LIVE THE LEGION!!!!!

Not much else to be said. Although referring to some of those Adventure stories as "Bullshit"...it was the Silver Age, man. Comics had to crawl before they could walk.

My first Legion experience was reading my cousin's ADVENTURE COMICS back in 1970. I was a Legion buyer from then to 1994.

The Zero Hour reboot killed it for me.

Yeah, maybe "Bullshit" was a bit harsh but, then again...I've never been one to hold the Silver Age in that high of an esteem.

If the stories sucked to me...then I say it. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy a lot of them but, I'm not just gonna drink the Kool-aid about stories from the Silver Age just cuz said stories came out way back when. I like the art and the story telling better now.

Hmmm...that was when I got back into it. Perhaps I accept and like that era so much because I wasn't biased against some of the crap that came in the 10 years previous to it.

Then again, maybe it's just cuz I'm a fanboy...

Clearly I need to ban this cheeky newbie.

The only good thing about stories set in the future is the ability to really mess things about. You can put a molecular screen around the earth and smash it in an invasion, and carve Darkseid's face in the side of a planet, and no one will care because its a 1000 years hence.

Not to mention the small detail that characters can actually age...

They actually do. I may be wrong, but I think they aged in real time: 1977 was 2977, 1984 was 2984... then there's the five year leap, so 1990 for example was 2995.

I don't see why they wouldn't age in the new version of the comic. If dates were specified, then they probably will.
