I say screw with his mind. He's essentially a kid trapped in a man's body... and there's a lot of potential there. Have him do something as Captain Marvel that Billy Batson just wouldn't be able to handle. Have him kill someone by accident, sleep with someone... something. And don't give me the whole "the wisdom of Solomon wouldn't let him do something like that" like it's an infallible argument, because Solomon wasn't infallible either.
After that, have Batson keep Captain Marvel inside of him, like this deep dark secret that he can't let out for fear that it'll happen again. And, to make matters worse, Captain Marvel starts talking to Billy, begging the kid to let the hero out.
I would love to get a crack at writing something like that. I would love to push mainstream buttons. Maybe even give Billy a brief stint in Arkham just for kicks. In my mind, this would be one of the only ways I'd be able to view Captain Marvel and enjoy him.
