Actually, the drip wasn't the point either. The morphine drip is just procedural. The point is that due to the extent of her brain damage, she is oblivious to pain and suffering, hunger or thirst.
Then why the morphine? And why do I keep hearing that she'll be in a euphoric state when she dies? I'm still baffled why some people are so clearly excited to see this woman starved to death.
