Thanks. I liked your thread about "Watchman." If you get a chance I would like to hear your thoughts about Rorty as well. I'm planning on doing my dissertation on Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity so Im always up for a good chat.
But, right now I just want my semester to end. Jesus, why did I pick a job where I have to write essays for the rest of my life!

Fantastic! I wish every school required this as reading. Although Adams always said he never meant it to be anything more than a funny sci-fi romp, he defeated his cause by sliding in volumes of social, political, and cultural commentary between the cracks. Unfortunately for him, some of his readers were just a bit smarter than he had anticipated, and actually got his points, subtle as they were.
I read where he would get mail from fans trying to relegate him to great-thinker-level and ask him all sort of philosophical questions, like, "What do you think our purpose on Earth is?", and, "Why is the universe here?". He would answer with things like "Carrots", and, "5+7.6", just to fuck with their minds.
He was a very smart, yet, humble man. He would have been, and was, the first to tell anyone that he was nothing more than a comedy writer, and that if they were looking for any real answers to existence, go and read a book about such things.
Anyone who really wants to hear his views on existence and science should pick up A Salmon of Doubt, published posthumously. It's a collection of all the science articles and university speeches he did over his life. Great stuff. You should look into this Flagg. You might find some more required reading for your students....

Kinda reminds me of Socrates and his insistence that wisdom is know that you know nothing. Adams was an amazing thinker, but I think you are right with the "Carrots" antecdote that his primary lesson was to not take shit too seriously.

I've been meaning to pick this up, but I haven't found the time. For some reason my professors think Kierkegaard and Heidegger are more important. I'll be sure to make time for Salmon over the summer.

In all of this fawning praise for the book, the question hasn't been asked
Will the masses come see this?
Yeah yeah, I know "fuck the masses". Still, I don't see this film being anything but moderately succesful at best. In the U.S. at least...
From Washington Times interview with DeLay:
Mr. Hurt: Have you ever crossed the line of ethical behavior in terms of dealing with lobbyists, your use of government authority or with fundraising?
Mr. DeLay: Ever is a very strong word.

Actually, I think that they might. I was honestly more worried that it was too slick for old school fans of the book. Personally, I still have some reservations, but I getting more excited the closer it gets. Something about the dry british humor and the left over Dr. Who sets, while tacky (sorry doctor ) made the old BBC production for me. I'm worried that it will lose something by turning it into a major motion picture. But, I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Of course, Tom Baker, that's it! I knew it was a ridiculously simple sort of name, but I never can remember it. I used to love that show as a kid, but I can never find it on TV (I think a few years ago it came on BBC America at like 3AM, but I never had a chance to watch it).
That almost sounds like something from HHG2G: giving something a name so simple that no one can remember what it is. Kinda like the S.E.P. field.

I'm going to go see it tomorrow (sigh) in what is currently a small group of three. I've been asked if I'm going to bring a towel.
I don't know.

How's the TV-series from the 80's like?

I just got back from the movie. It was good, but I think I liked the BBC TV show better. It wans't a glitzy and the fx were cheezy, but it stayed truer to the humor and plot of the book. But, if you don't have a preconcieved notion of what "HH2G" should be like I think you will like it a lot.
My advice: watch the movie, read the book, then watch the 80's TV version.
