I've been lurking on the boards for awhile, but I saw Sin City yesterday and wanted to chime in...
I snuck out of work early to see it with a friend yesterday. She doesn't read comics and she still liked it - she loved Marv. I thought that the inner dialogue that you read in the book sounded a little stilted on screen, but that didn't take away from the enjoyment of the picture. I've never seen a comic book movie that stayed so true to the origin material. Everything from the dialogue to the way people were standing/positoned in scenes was exactly like it was in Miller's originals. I loves me some Clive, and Dwight is one of my faves, but I was really surprised at how good Mickey Rourke was as Marv - he totally bulked up and the make up/profile of him - everything was fantastic. The violence was as extreme as it is in the books, but bc. it was in b&w and so over the top I don't see how people could really get squeamish about it. It reminded me of the Kill Bill Vol. I kind of violence...
I noticed really minor details in the movie too - like the earrings that Gail, Becky and Miho wore were exactly the ones they had in the book - chick details, but I still like that they were there. Miho's fight scenes were staged exactly like they were in the comics - my friend and I sat behind three fan boys who cheered out loud while she sliced and diced Jackie boy and co. I don't know the girl who played Miho, but I ended up really loving the character after this. Everyone did a great job with their roles - even Brittany Murphy was ok as Shellie, and I think she's blown half of hollywood to get where she is, so that's saying something...the chick form the Gilmore Girls who played Becky was really good too. Frodo gone evil - Elijah Wood didn't say a word and still creeped me out.
I only hope that Batman Begins is as true to the character as the Sin City movie was to its characters. I'm totally buying this when it comes out on DVD.
BTW - can anyone tell me which scene Tarantino directed? I couldn't tell.

Well, he was on set every day, constantly communicating with the actors and Rodriguez. Very few comic films can say that the creator had that level of involvement.

I've heard it's the scene with Dwight and Jackie Boy in the car, but I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know.

I don't deny that, but ten to one he gets the credit for the special effects and such cuz' it's "Frank Miller's Sin City". He was prolly responsible for most of the script. Actual directing though? I doubt it.

He'll get the credit for the look, because it is his look. As far as effects go, it's been pretty heavily publicized that Rodriguez went digital with the backgrounds and that it was his choice to stay true to the GNs in making the film, so anyone who misses that isn't paying attention and is not worth the time. Fuck 'em if they get it wrong.

in the credits rodriguez gets credit for directing or head of visual effects..some such..I just saw it and can't really add anything..most of the inner dialogue ended up sounding funny and it kind of rolled itself into the more amusing parts of the story..at the beginning it was hard to get used to, but after 10 minutes it was great....
Also who wa the josh hartnett character? It's been a few years atleast since I have read any of these...

And guess what. NEITHER DO I!!!
I just got back from seeing the movie and I am pissed. This isn't Kevin Smith type pissed, I mean I am REALLY pissed. I have never wanted to walk out of the theater so bad in my fucking life--GodDAMN this movie sucked!! I could give less of a shit who gets the credit here cuz' this movie just sucked ass through and through. Rodriguez, Tarantino, and Miller should all be ashamed of themselves! I want my fucking nine dollars back dammit!!
Truth be told though....It was my own damn fault. I heard from you guys that this script remained loyal to the book, which means that it was actual Miller dialogue, which I hate. I didn't read Sin City for a reason, I should've refrained from watching this movie for the same reason. Miller. Can't. Right. He recycles the same stuff over and over and gets lucky when it actually fits. And the fact that he goes for shock value up and down and all around is added ingredient for fame.
Miller. I have never wanted to kick your ass so much as I want to now. Burn in hell or give me back my money and 3 hours.

The review's right about the anti-Christian setiment though. That much you gotta admit. I still didn't really care about that because it's the same old tune from Miller that's just gotten too boring to complain about. Let the fucker be bitter.

Looks like they don't like Frank Miller's story, not necessarily the movie. I didn't notice anyone taking shots at the film production etc, just the characters and plot events.

I thought the cinematography would make up for any writing that I didn't care for and I also didn't expect it to be this heavy on the crap he pulls. I figured since it won a bunch of awards and acclaim that it wasn't like his usual stuff....Look, I admit I was wrong, K?

But this film is faithful to the source material in a way I've never seen before.
The screen shots were filmed directly from the pages of the book...same angles, lighting, everything.
The dialouge was word for word from the comic...a few cuts here and there but only where necessary to keep the pace moving.
The casting was perfect. Just about every actor was faithful to the comic version of the character.
As far as being a movie on it's own merits...for those that might not be familiar with the comic...the acting/line delivery would seem to be stunted. Not the greatest performances you've ever seen by the actors involved. But, that's because the comic itself is a stylized version of the classic noir movies of the 40's and 50's. What works on a written page can come across as a little stilted when said out loud. With that in mind, I think the performances were great and, again, very true to the actual books.

Yeah, I acknowledged that, but like I said: I just went cuz' the effects looked cool and I figured whatever I didn't like, I could ignore. But I soon found out that they couldn't keep me from vomiting out my stomach.
Look, I guess I just expected way more action to satiate me, I was wrong. Duly acknowledged in my first post on the subject.

As you can see, already acknowledged, but no way does he not owe me money. Sometimes I can handle bad, other times I can handle really bad, but this movie is infinitely more worse than any of em'!
I'll put it in words you can understand: To me, Miller didn't ruin his own film. He ruined Rodriguez' film!

No, you're a retard. IT WAS TRUE TO FRANK MILLER. It was HIS movie produced by moviemakers! udnerstanb?

MmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmNo. You see, Frank Miller can't draw for shit, no talent there, which is not the case with those filmmakers.
I suppose I was expecting too much. Trying to make Miller's stuff seem like gold.
Oh well.

This movie kicked ass! It was awesome! But since my parents don't give me attention, I have an idea. I'll trash the film since everyone is in agreement it was awesome. Then I will have a life vicariously through the people who interact with me based on my disagreement. It's sad, but it was the lot I was cast.
