Resident Evil is a game about a virus that turns living things into zombies... You play as one of the few people left alive in the area.
In the movie, the main character, played by The Fifth Element's Milla Jovanovich, is some amnesiac that awakes in a giant building owned by The Umbrella corporation, the same company from the game. The supercomputer in the building releases a virus (somehow a virus gets released, not too sure how, but the supercomp is evil) that turns living things into zombies. Amnesiac meets some commandos (not quite an accurate word for them... but they have guns and they're organized...) that are there to investigate (I'm not too sure on that, but they're "good guys"). Hijinx ensue withe gore and stuff... Zombified scientist... these creepy things called "Lickers" and zombified dogs.
