Candidate Giuliani would appoint same pro-life Justices as Bush

David Edwards and Mike Sheehan
Published: Tuesday February 6, 2007

2008 Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani says he would have appointed the same pro-life Supreme Court justices as President Bush.

Appearing on Fox News' 'Hannity and Colmes' show, the former New York City mayor said, "The appointment of judges I would make would be very similar to, if not exactly the same as, the last two judges that were appointed," referring to Bush's selections of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito.

Earlier, Giuliani told conservative co-host Sean Hannity with a smile, "I agree with you almost 100 percent" of the time.

Having read consecutively Brendan Miniter's column in the Wall Street Journal on Rudy Giuliani, and then Cal Thomas's sharing of a message from a soldier friend in Mosul, I am left with little doubt that if Rudy was president now, we would be kicking butt in Iraq.

Giuliani fee for speaking at tsunami charity: $100k, private jet
David Edwards and Mike Sheehan
Published: Friday February 16, 2007
Rudy Giuliani's eye-opening speaking fees.

While charging speaking fees is a regular practice for expert and celebrity speakers, some are criticizing Giuliani for collecting speaking fees from charities. CNN reports on one appearance at a 2005 tsunami fundraiser for which Giuliani received $100,000, and also mentions a contract stipulation that the former New York City mayor be given the use of a "private aircraft -- must be a Gulfstream 4 or bigger."

One political analyst tells CNN, "He's a presidential candiate, everything he's done in the past is gonna come into scrutiny."

RAW

Well not everything. Rudy was smart & had his name trademarked to help protect the product that is Rudy Giuliani ™ from scrutiny. Can't say what is worse, him charging a fee to a charity or them paying it. That type of thing really gives charitable groups a bad name.

I wonder why the liberal blog you got this from didn't mention that another famous political figure who charges charities even more to speak.

I suppose Raw might excuse its one sided coverage by arguing that Bill isn't a candidate.

However, by law, any money Bill earns is counted as income for his wife, who is also a candidate for President. So there would an equally valid basis for his fees to come under scrutiny also.

Finally, there's the simple matter that these charities pay people like Guiliani and Clinton because the fees they charge are made up for by the money they bring in. So what's the harm for either?

I fear another President like Bush G-man, & Rudy Giuliani ™ reeks of it. And depending on who Clinton is charging charity wise, I would have a problem with him profiting from it.

That's bullshit. Sorry, but it is.

You like McCain, who is politically closer to Bush on social issues and possibly to right on military issues. But fear Rudy, who is to Bush's left on nearly every social issue, is the new Bush? And don't even get me started on the fact that you hardly, if ever, criticize Rommney who, like Bush, is a former governor who is running in part on an appeal to the religious right.

This is about the fact that you don't want to see a Republican win and at this point Rudy looks like the most electable republican.

As for your other points, Sammitch called it. You're giving Bill and Hillary a free pass but not Rudy for the same thing. Sheer hypocrisy.

And I call bullshit on your bullshit. Rudy has started modifying his positions to get elected like Romney has & I predicted he would. Romney will receive more attention if it's warranted but I see the race as being between McCain & Rudy for the GOP. McCain is hardly unelectable going up against a Democrat. I don't agree with all his positions but he has a good solid respectable record IMHO. Personally I think by the time we get to 08, McCain will be far more electable than the guy who cried & thanked God that Bush Jr. was are President during 9/11.

I didn't give Bill Clinton a pass as I said I would have a problem depending on who he was charging. For example a hurricane charity or something like the Salvation Army. If you or Cap have some examples lets see them. It would actually be nice to see Cap post something a little meatier than his usual anti-MEM post.

Recently both Clinton & Bush Sr. have done some really good charitable work with providing relief for Katrina so I don't really begrudge the man for charging speaking fees for groups that are not charities.

You keep bringing this up like its some sort of important fact. In fact, it seems to your main objection to Rudy.

However, it wasn't until recently, that most Americans were happy that Bush was the President during 9/11. Its a big part of the reason he got re-elected, remember?

So the fact that Rudy, or anyone else, is or was happy that Bush was President at the time of 9/11 isn't a big deal.

Furthermore, if you're going to use that single statement as some sort of litmus test then you need to remember that McCain has publicly endorsed Bush for president twice and still supports him more often than not, including on the war (which is, of course, the main reason that Bush in unpopular). So McCain also fails your litmus test.

Therefore, Chris my friend, there still seems to be no valid reason to be singling out Guiliani, of all the GOP candidates, for your vitriol unless its because of his likely electability.

Other than his thanking God for President Bush thing, I've noted that he is changing his socially liberal stances that he had when he was he needed them to get & stay elected for liberal NYC. He had different views on abortion before running for Mayor, he had different views while running as mayor & now he's changing them for his run for President. His views are as dependable as his 3 marriages IMHO. I trust McCain not to undo gay rights, I don't Rudy.

Obviously it's still early so I'll admit that Rudy would certainly gain some respect if he runs on being socially liberal but I think at best we'll see a version of "compasionate conservatism". I can also say I've been consistent with McCain & plan to do so if he winds up winning the Republican primary. I like him now & I'll like him in '08. Can you say the same thing G-man? If he wins my guess is you'll do or say anything to help him get elected, all past misgivings shed.

Your reading anger in my post that just isn't there PJP. Considering the things you've said about pretty much any Dem politician, I can't see how you of all people could read anger there. For example if I was really angry I would be doing some name calling or talking about hate-fucking. (OK, probably not the hate-fuck thing since I just don't play that way)

You would think that, given he's a moderate republican and favors gay rights, that Rudy Giuliani would be MEM's type of Republican.

However, MEM regularly bashes Rudy as an "adulterer" (odd, considering that leftists don't usually care about that sort of thing) and has even made veiled accusations that Rudy is somehow guilty of incest.

As someone who claims to be a good liberal, this behavior on MEM's part might seem perplexing.

However, this month's issue of American Spectator has a report, which is not online, about Rudy and Hillary.

This report says that Rudy is the man "the Clinton camp fears most" and quotes an unnamed "Clinton ally" as saying Rudy "'is the one guy Hillary doesn't want to have to deal with.'"

As a result "Clinton allies have been quietly working across the country to dig up dirt they can use against him." The article specifically notes that the Clinton team plans to use Rudy's marital history against him and "even before Giuliani announced his candidacy...the Clinton camp had a set of talking points attacking Giuliani's private life."

So there you have it: as a loyal democratic activist, our friend Chris is simply repeating the talking points he was given and instructed to parrot...all because Hillary, his chosen candidate "fears Rudy the most."

So once again it's really Hillary's fault.

Why is it so hard that I don't admire someone who held a press conference to break up with one of his wives (not the one he was related to but the middle one)

Rudy just like Hillary isn't going to get a pass on their private or public lives. I'm sure that seems very unfair to you G-man but if Hillary has the balls to face such scrutiny, I expect your boy Rudy to face the same type of scrutiny.

Consider it officially denied

Rudy's various wives isn't a secret to dig up. Much like Bill Clinton's affair it's out there. What surprises me is while I've seen talk about how the Lewinski thing will affect Hillary's run there hasn't been much about Rudy's sexcapades. He had to carelessly leave his game plan out where his people say it will be a problem for it to barely get a mention. Oh well, maybe it will make better copy later on in the race.

the Clinton camp fears Rudy most

the Clintons are digging up dirt on him

I'm just denying the part that pertains to me G-man. I don't know what the Clinton campaign is doing. I certainly would hope they would work anything to their advantage though. Although it doesn't take any digging concerning Rudy's various wives. Google & a couple of minutes reading time is all it takes to see the icky side of Rudy that you don't want people talking about.

His business stuff that he's hiding however is trickier. When that stuff starts turning up I would be more inclined to give the Clinton campaign some credit for digging it up.
