I'm diggin' TV shows on DVD. Spent the last few months working my way through box sets like Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, The West Wing, Firefly and Freaks and Geeks.

Now, Carnivale has appeared on the shelf at my local retailer. And I've never seen an episode, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. What's the deal? Worth buying?

I'd hate to recomend someone to spend money on something and then they hate it......but......I love this show. The first season was good 'cause it set up everything, but wait till you get to the second season. Some Dark Fucked up shit. And the last episode of season 2 provided such a twist it'll blow you away. Definitely worth it.

I did the same thing. I had never seen it, heard nothing but good things about it so I took a chance and bought it. It was worth it, good show. Now I am thinking of doing the same thing with Deadwood.

I liked the first season of Carnivale. Not as brilliant as SFU or The Sopranos, but still excellent.

Deadwood: ex-cel-lent.

Carnivale: not so much.

I couldn't get thru the first 2 eps so I gave up on it. Then again, what do I know...? I can't stand Curb Your Enthusiasm

Six Feet Under is good, not great, Mxy. So take that.

Six Feet Under is great.

Too bad the box sets are so expensive though.

Carnivale?

I really wanted to like it. The episodes sort of meandered throughout the season though. Nothing really [consistantly] gripping ever happened. So no, I don't recommend this one.

I've seen several years of Six Feet Under, Mxy. And it gets better as it goes.

But too much of the writing involves TELLING us what a character is feeling, as opposed to SHOWING us. Nate will do something stupid and another character will say "I think your problem is YOU'RE AFRAID OF DEATH!" Then his ghost dad will show up and tell him he's afraid of death, when Nate's motivations could be gotten across more subtly through his behaviour and dialogue, which is something the writing on The Sopranos has going for it.

But this is a minor gripe in a show I otherwise enjoy immensely. It's something I've only noticed occasionally in SFU. And calling a show good is quite a compliment when most American dramas I've seen wouldn't even make it near the 'good' list.

You should buy that DVD with Lou Diamond Phillips about lycanthropy - you'd love it!
