The songs in films like Walk the Line and O Brother... are sung consistently throughout, not just at one time, like the movies you mentioned. Musical films tend to have lots of singing, as opposed to just one number.
And there doesn't have to be a spontaneous breaking into song like an actual musical. That's where 'unconventional' comes in.
And, if I remember correctly, the Coen brothers have said in interview that they even consider O Brother... a musical, which cements my point rather nicely, I think.

I never said "O Brother" wasn't a musical, that was a different poster.
If anything, comparing and contrasting "O Brother" with "Walk the Line" demonstrates why the former is a musical and the latter isn't.
In "OB," characters burst into song in their day to day lives and to demonstrate how they feel at a given moment, most notably the water nymphs, the baptists and, of course, the KKK leader. There are production numbers out in the open (again, the KKK scene) that wouldn't occur in real life, only in a musical.
In "Walk the Line," on the other hand, Johnny and June don't burst into song when they're not on stage. There's no big production number of, for example, Johnny staggering to June's house drunk, set to "Walk the Line." Instead what you have is characters who sing when they're at work...at their jobs as singers.
Basically, "WtL" is a drama about a couple who happen to be singers. "OBWaT" is musical with bits of drama.

3 million stand in "Line" for Johnny Cash DVDThe much-vaunted "Oscar bounce," in which studios use Academy Awards buzz to help sell nominated films on DVD, is paying off for "Walk the Line."
The Johnny Cash biopic sold more than 3 million copies during its first day in stores Tuesday, 25% above the forecasts of its distributor, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
"We're thrilled with this sales velocity and expect all of the activity around the Oscars to further boost sales and awareness this week and well into next," said Steve Feldstein, the studio's senior VP marketing communications. "But truly, it speaks volumes to the strength of the film and consumers' continued love affair with the DVD format."
"Line," whose nominations include acting nods for Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, was one of three Oscar-nominated films to hit DVD the week before Sunday's ceremony. The others are "Pride & Prejudice" and "A History of Violence."

I loved that movie! I want to own it and sing along with it like 5 times a day! It made me love Johnny Cash more than I did before! I want to buy his CD's! I'm sad he's dead.

Finally saw this movie.
I went into it knowing almost nothing about Johnny Cash, other then what has been said here, and I really enjoyed it.
Joaquin Phoenix was good, but not great. I've never liked him but I thought he really came into himself as a actor with this movie. His other roles I've seen him in have been weak in my opinion.
Reese Witherspoon was excellent in it, but I think she is a great actress, she just picks some really bad movies. She completely deserved best actress oscar.
As a whole I thought the moive was great. I'll definitely look into his music now and I'll probably read his autobiography soon.

I think Reese Witherspoon is terrible, but I might rent it, since I do like Johnny Cash. I also respect the fact that Phoenix sung the songs himself(like Kilmer in The Doors). Obvious lipsynching is a huge movie turnoff for me.

I loved this movie so much I bought it for Killconey for his birthday so I can watch it anytime I want. I also bought the soundtrack so I can sing along to it.
Stewie (to one of the prostitutes at Cleveland's house): So, is there any tread left on the tires? Or at this point would it be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway?
