Jo grew up on the streets of Rimbor, a planet notorious for neglecting its children. After an accidental trip into the belly of a scavenging space whale, Jo gained super-strength, speed, flight, invulnerability, penetra-vision, flash-vision, and enhanced reflexes, but he can only use one power at a time.
Hoping to leave his planet's mean streets behind, Jo joined Leland McCauley's WorkForce as Ultra Boy. When the WorkForce met the Legion, it became obvious to Jo that the Legion's heroism was preferable to the WorkForce's self-interest. He soon defected to the Legion. His abilities and experience make Ultra Boy one of the most powerful and mature Legionnaires.
When Ultra Boy and Apparition met, it was true love at first sight. The two married eventually and Apparition recently had their baby. Unfortunately things have turned for the worse and now he's having to work hard to preserve their marriage.
