OK I know Im the guy that hates popular media...but can someone tell me what the draw of this guy is?
The only movie of his I found SLIGHTLY entertaining was Sleeper.
Why do actors and actresses clamor to be in one of his films?!!?!?
His latest seems to be the worst of all a blind director? I guess its supposed to be a slap to Hollywood but Im thinking its the pot calling the kettle!

Never saw many of his films.I think the only one I saw that I liked was "A Midsummers Night Sex Fantasy"(or something along those lines).

Woody Allen is a funny, funny guy. "Sleeper" was hillarious, "A Midsummer's Night Sex Comedy" was good, "Love and Death" was good, "Play it Again Sam" was funny, "Bananas" was a scream, and "Everything you ever wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask" was humorous as well. However, his latest films have been pretty lame, and what I really can't stand about his movies now are that he writes himself as the male lead and love interest of celebrities like Helen Hunt and Charlize Thereon, when he's in his sixties. And he pretends to have an inferiority complex....

Im sorry but as far as Im concerned no matter how big a name he was after the pedophile deal why would ANY sane person wish to work with him?
Not one of his films has ever truly ientertained me and usually I have no interest in them. I have watched several films simply because fo the raves they got...but I didnt get it...

I just saw a documentary about Woody tonight, and toward the end of it he says something like "I don't want to be one of those guys who talks about his movies and makes them sound really good, then you go and see them and they're nothing special." He said that he rarely finds his own movies to be that good and is glad that anybody likes them at all. I also remember reading somewhere else that he refuses to watch any of his movies once they're released. Kinda interesting. I haven't seen all of his movies, but the ones I have I liked. They're a good change of pace. They've never jumped out as 'greatest of all-time' material, like Monty Python or Marx Brother films, but then again I've never seen Annie Hall or Bullets Over Broadway, supposedly his best work. At the very least his films are well-acted and loaded with cultural references.

His early films IMO are by far his best work, like Sleeper, Bananas, Love and Death, etc. At least, they're my favorites. I don't really go to anything he does anymore, for reasons stated above.

Pop culture and literature mostly. I just saw Manhatten(the beginning, anyway) and there's long sequences of dialogue that make shitloads of references to directors, artists and writers. Ingmar Bergman to Vincent Van Gough to F. Scott Fitzgerald were mentioned among others. That's the culture references I was referring to. Radio Days is my favorite one that I've seen.

well, allen's new movie debuted this weekend to a whopping 2.2 million, trailing just behind spider-man. i've heard its one of those kinda movies that you could take your daughter to, then have sex with her!

Well MJs gambling obviously became a problem when he was asked to leave basketball....and he went to baseball.....suddenly and stranglely after that his father was killed (perhaps because he wasnt fronting games anymore?). I really dont know about all that ...but it is known Jordan gambles alot....and low and behold we recently find out this SUPER guy that stars opposite Bugs Bunny coz hes that nice....cheated REPEATEDLY on his wife....a fact that had been covered up throughout his career on the Bulls!!! Why was that? As far as Jackson goes he had an affair and has a kid out of wedlock....agreed its the business of only him and his wife....even though he is highly respected individual often asked to go out and represent the US as if he were an elected offical.....
oddly enough though the last elected offical we had was almost booted out of a real office as President because of a blow job....and we still hear jokes about Clinton...yet nobody even talks about Jacksons acts.

In Woody Allen's defense (although defending him here will do as much good as defending him in Nazi Germany): 1. Soon-Yi was NEVER Woody's adopted daughter. She was the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow, Woody's on-again, off-again girlfriend (that's right, they never married) and the pianist Andre Previn, who Mia had long since divorced. Though Woody was around, he was not her adoptive father nor did he ever claim to be. 2. Though I could be wrong, I am almost positive she was at least 18, the legal age of consent. So she and Woody were consenting adults. Is that creepy? You betcha. Is it illegal? Hell no. So you guys can believe whatever talk-radio morning show jokes you have heard, but those are the facts. I'm a huge Woody Allen fan. And yes, it helps to be Jewish or from New York to "get" his humor, and it certainly helps to be somewhat older. I'm 24 but I grew up watching his movies, so I've always been a fan. And as another Jewish wiseguy and aspiring writer with a fetish for Asian women, I feel like I have to back him up during these character assassinations. And why does every star in Hollywood still want to work with him? It sure as hell isn't because his movies make a ton of money, because they never do, but for the prestige of working with a genius and one of the few great auteurs of American cinema.

Never cared much for Allen, but have always enjoyed Mel Brooks comedies and films. Both men are over 60, Jewish, and generally insist on being in every movie they make. Still, to me, Brooks has always been the superior comic.

Because it's no-one's buisness but he and his wife's? I won't say that he didn't cheat on his wife, I didn't hear anything about it but I do know the lifestyle, Magic Johnson is proof of this. His father's murder was not Mob style, it was by two REALLY REALLY dumb punks who were just out of jail. I mean c'mon, after shooting Michael Jordan's dad, they stole his car and drove it around town, picking up hookers. Then they recorded a homemade video with them RAPPING with Jordan's jewerly on, including two of Jordan's NBA championship rings! THEN, they placed several phone calls on Jordan's cell-phone(most of which were to phone sex services), and wore some of Jordan's SUITS to a stripclub!!! I dont know about you...but I hardly consider a guy classy who cheats on his wife...it was proven by PIs hired by his wife. It neverr ceases to amaze me how the media picks and chooses who they're gonna get down on for adultery. I do agree with the Woody Soon Li thing being creepy but its more than that. Regardless what her age was and whethter or not he was legal guardian, being in her Mother's life puts a certain sense of accountability on him as an authority figure....crossing that line is not OK. She was still under her mothers wing so to speak.
That said I lose respect for actors who work for him or those who say what a honor it is to work for the little punk. But....back to the topic at hand....the main one that is... Whats funny about his movies? I mean really...I guess you have to be a New Yorker to appreciate it...or Jewish...I just dont get it.... Now Mel Brooks....THATS humor!

I'm an atheist from Wisconsin and I get his movies. Maybe being a neurotic wannabe writer helps? I dunno. Everything Mel Brooks pre-Spaceballs is pure gold. Especially History of the World Part 1. I'd place him higher than Woody, but I like 'em both lots.

Jeez, man, the guy made a mistake, I'm not trying to defend him but are you going to condemn him in every possible manner because of something the media says he did? You may not know the whole story, I don't think anything could excuse what he did but it's possible that the situation wasn't as bad as it was made out to be.
