Stacy Nadeau, who grew up in Ann Arbor, appears in this new ad series from Dove. That's her on the far right.
In a sea of bone-thin models and actresses, you can’t help but notice Dove’s ad campaign. It features "real women" with "real curves" and one of those women is from metro Detroit.
20-year-old Stacy Nadeau grew up in Ann Arbor, went to Saline High, and now studies in Chicago. But this summer, she’s at the center of an ad campaign that’s got real women talking about their bodies.
A size 10, Stacy Nadeau never thought she’d be a model until dove held open auditions.
"My mom encouraged me, she said I really have a fun feeling. I think you should go try it so I tried it and here I am," says Stacy.
Now, Stacy is plastered on billboards and magazines all over the country. She’s one of Dove’s six "Real Curves" women.
That’s her at the end, on the right, of the picture on this page. The campaign is meant to sell Dove’s firming lotion line by showing women of all sizes.
In this weight-obsessed world, the message of the campaign and the women in it is hitting home with women who are sharing their feelings on-line. Stacy says she was most touched by a posting from a girl battling eating disorders.
"She wrote that she’s been using our images and putting them up on her mirror to remind her that being real and being beautiful is OK," Stacy said.
People are starting to recognize Stacy on the street. Her mom and boyfriend are proud of how she’s handling the attention. As for being seen by millions in her underwear, Stacy tells me, she doesn’t mind the "exposure."
"Here we are, showing you our untouched beautiful selves so you should really feel encouraged and feel good about yourself as well," Stacy says.
Dove says it’s too early to say how much the ads have helped sales, but if the campaign is a success look for more ads showing
