"News"?

My "????" was directed at the statement that if someone steals a TV, it's like a gateway crime into badder and badder things. I don't think it works that way.

In riots and looting situations it is. Not opinion just fact, lawlessness breeds worse and worse crimes. I'm not sure if you thought I meant everyday crimes or not. But these situations it does. Look at any major riot, most of the people who kill during those werent always predisposed to having a violent record but get caught up in the frenzy. Lack of law enforcement breeds anarchy, I don't know how that is even debateable.

To answer a few questions:

1) I have plenty of money (for now), and will probably just end up relocating up to South Carolina permanently. Your generous offers and concern are sincerely appreciated. You don't know how good it feels to know that there are people out there that actually give a shit.

2) Wbam, the situation is pretty much exactly like most newsites have shown. Whereas New Orleans was hit with mostly flooding, the MS gulfcoast (us) got slammed with mostly torrential winds. It leveled us all back to the stone age, for awhile. I've been reading up, and have heard that all of these volunteer elec crews have flooded into the state, and some power is being restored, as well as water. I plan to try and make it back down there this week to see if any looters claimed my remaining stuff. And, yes, the looting and violence is exactly as bad as you hear.

3) I am not the only one on this board that got hit. Remember, Grimm and thedoctor both live in the same city. And, while I think Grimm's family only suffered minor damage with trees, Doc's roof was punctured and shredded. Both are in Atlanta right now, and have no access to the net. But, keep them in mind as well. Sonhaven (a guy that still posts here sometimes) actually lived in Gulfport....a city that no longer exists. I haven't heard a thing about him. So, keep the others in mind, as well. I'm very, very, very lucky compared to alot of people.

4) Some people will continue to use this devastation as a political platform to further their own ends. Both, on these boards, and, in the political arena. Could something more have been done? Could they have reacted quicker? Could this have been predicted? Who fucking knows. Is it really that important? If this is some kind of political/social conspiracy of laziness, racism, ineptitude, and greed, there's nothing I can do about it. And, in the end, it's not going to reverse time and space. So, by all means, continue to debate it if you have nothing better to do. Let me know what you get out of it. Meanwhile, I'll be concentrating on the actual matter of rebuilding my life.

All in all, thank you all for your concern and generous offers. It's good to have family...

Well, when I go to the heroes con in north carolina next year maybe I'll have someone to go with now..??? Glad to see everything is still working out (as decently as possible). I hope your stuff is salvageable, and there are a few thousand troops in the state..so hopefully they cut down on looting.

Yeah, and your an ass. I complain about pricks leaving their animals to die in a flood and im a "PETA fucker"?!

I wouldnt let another human just die if I was in the chaos, but I also wouldnt leave my fucking dog to die a lonely death either. Maybe I dont value life as much as other people, but not risking my life and watching a dog/human die because I'd be 'Too scared' would be fucking worse than death. It'd be one of those things that wakes me up at night, even if it was 'just' a dog

well said, pro. on all accounts. and i honestly hope yer posts hit home, here. so lets skip the bullshit and get to what matters....

...anyone know who else?

we should get some shit together for them. lets put our ragtag community to work -- this is our person-to-person direct connection. theres a center in my town collecting piles of whatever to be transported down, so if you dont have that ability and you wanna send whatever here (water, clothes, donations, med supplies), ill add it to mine.

also, for those who know / use IRC:
http://wiki.nola-intel.org/index.php?title=Transcribing

some of the WB people are doing... something. i dont really understand, cuz i'm clueless with IRC. but its free, and if y'wanna give it a shot, here's the recap i got:

Looking for scanner transcribers to help with NOLA evacuation stuff. IRC rooms for transcribing scanner feeds from FEMA, NOLA pd, Nat'l Guard, etc. http://mgno.com -- interdictor

what's happening is there are a bunch of IRC channels set up, some to monitor the scanners. we're transcribing what's coming over the scanners into the IRC rooms, which are being logged. if any of your boards' peeps are IRCers and want to help, send them to that wiki

I said we could set money aside to send to maybe one of their paypal accounts or something once they get computer access. I think cash for them would be best. They'll need stuff that money will buy more easily than say some t-shirts and soap. But if we give it directly then we don't have to worry about red cross wasting it.

As usual...well put Pro!

It's good to hear you're alright. Let's all pray that the others are okay as well!

Flameswordsman...I think it's great that you love your pet so much. Many people love their pets as well and many did not see a happy ending because of this storm. Most notable was a family pet of nine years being left behind at the Superdome. I understand why they couldn't allow the animal to travel with them but I certainly am still saddened that a family that has already been through so much had to go through this horrible loss as well.

Ah, the joys of autumnal weather in the glorious American South. Swimming! Watersports! Gator-baiting! Sniping at emergency personnel! And for the adventurous seeking that ultimate extreme sporting vacation, hurricane hang-gliding! If our reservation lines are engaged, its not because our operators are busy but because all phone utility companies' exchanges are immersed in salt water.

If another hurricane starts building up, won't the US government need to evacuate New Orleans entirely?

Sen. Frist Becomes Medical Volunteer

Bill Frist took off his senator's coat on Saturday and flew for New Orleans as a medical volunteer.

Frist left Washington around 4:30 a.m. Saturday on his private plane. He spent most of the day helping to treat thousands of victims at Louis Armstrong International Airport and the New Orleans Convention Center.

He spoke by phone from a helicopter shuttling him between the two, taking a 45-minute tour above the flooded streets of downtown

The senator spent the day treating diabetics for low blood sugar and dealing with cases of high blood pressure and dehydration. Though he is a surgeon by training, there was no need to perform surgery on Saturday, he said.

After overnighting in Nashville, Tenn., following his day in New Orleans, Frist planned to return to the Gulf Coast on Sunday to work in storm-ravaged areas of Mississippi and Alabama, as well as returning with supplies to New Orleans.

He plans to be back in Washington by the time the Senate reconvenes on Tuesday. He said the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee John Roberts will go forward as planned.

Good show.

Hopefully some other celebrities who are doctors, such as
Howard Dean will go down and do the same thing.

That it will, in fact, restore order is one theory.

It may also provoke more rioutous behavior. You've got desperate people down there, those stealing TVs and those not.

Just got back in from Atlanta today. Grimm is still without power. He got phone and water back before we left Thursday. I've got water but no power or internet. I just came up to work to check on what's happening here and to get online and let you guys know what's happening. I won't have to come back to work until next Monday, so I'm headed up north to my mom's house for the week.

On the way to Atlanta last Thursday, Grimm and I passed a shitload of trucks from various electrical companies damn near the whole trip down I-59 & 20. Passed a few more from Norfork, VA on the way back today. Also, several military convoys with gas and water trucks as well as equipment, medical supplies, and personnel all the way from the GA state line in. Also, I milked the shit out of being in the middle of the Hurricane to cash checks and get goodies all damn weekend. For those of you donating to charities and such to help out, bless you. I know I'm doing fine right now until they get power and everything back up. I believe it's the same for Grimm. Please direct all your charity towards the people on the Gulf Coast and in New Orleans who really got hit. My roommate(who's actually Sonhaven's uncle)'s parents lost their house and the last I knew before I left Thursday, he hadn't heard from since 10:30 Monday morning. For those of you who are trying to politicize this and blame one side or politician or the other, fuck you you needle dick cunts.

I'd also like to make a side note for the debate about if religion is good for society. Before the military, electric companies, or FEMA every started to get to work in MS, churches from as far away as Florida swooped in and set up hot meal programs and brought water and clothes for people affected. Take that for what you will.

I'm off to northern MS. There's internet access up there, so I might be on later tonight.

Evacuees Distraught Over Lost Pets

As Valerie Bennett was evacuated from a New Orleans hospital, rescuers told her there was no room in the boat for her dogs. She pleaded. "I offered him my wedding ring and my mom's wedding ring," the 34-year-old nurse recalled Saturday. They wouldn't budge. She and her husband could bring only one item, and they already had a plastic tub containing the medicines her husband, a liver transplant recipient, needed to survive.

Such emotional scenes were repeated perhaps thousands of times along the Gulf Coast last week as pet owners were forced to abandon their animals in the midst of evacuation.

In one example reported last week by The Associated Press, a police officer took a dog from one little boy waiting to get on a bus in New Orleans. "Snowball! Snowball!" the boy cried until he vomited. The policeman told a reporter he didn't know what would happen to the dog.

At the hospital, a doctor euthanized some animals at the request of their owners, who feared they would be abandoned and starve to death. He set up a small gas chamber out of a plastic-wrapped dog kennel.

"The bigger dogs were fighting it. Fighting the gas. It took them longer. When I saw that, I said 'I can't do it,'" said Bennett's husband, Lorne.

Valerie Bennett left her dogs with the anesthesiologist, who promised to care for about 30 staff members' pets on the roof of the hospital, Lindy Boggs Medical Center.

"He said he'd stay there as long as he possibly could," Valerie Bennett recalled, speaking from her husband's bedside at Atlanta's Emory University Hospital.

On Saturday afternoon, she said she saw a posting on a Web site called petfinder.com that said the anesthesiologist was still caring for the animals.

Louisiana State Treasurer John Kennedy, who was helping with relief efforts Saturday, said some evacuees refused to leave without their pets.

"One woman told me 'I've lost my house, my job, my car and I am not turning my dog loose to starve,'" Kennedy said.

Kennedy said he persuaded refugees to get on the bus by telling them he would have the animals taken to an exhibition center.

You know, just a thought, but if the rescue workers and police didn't have to deal with the looters and would just shoot the criminal fuckers on sight like the should, they might have more time and resources to help the elderly and children rescue their pets.

Many Still Refuse to Leave New Orleans
Sep 05 2:13 PM US/Eastern

NEW ORLEANS

New Orleans police officers are moving through the Hurricane Katrina- devastated city and trying to get thousands of residents who have resisted moving to leave, a deputy police chief said Monday.

During a news conference, Deputy Superintendent Warren Riley said police were telling the remaining residents that there is no food, water or jobs and nothing to remain in New Orleans for.

"This city has been destroyed," Riley said.

Riley said police did have the authority to force evacuations, but did not spell out whether officers are taking that step. In an earlier interview on WWL radio, Mayor Ray Nagin said that authorities were going to try to persuade people to leave. Officers will no longer be handing out water to people who will not evacuate, the mayor said.

Riley estimated that fewer than 10,000 people were left in the city. He said some simply did not want to leave their homes _ while others were hanging back to engage in criminal activities, such as looting.

"We don't know how long this is going to last," he said.

Riley also said police were asking people not to return to the city for now. New Orleans is still without utilities and has collapsed power lines all over the city, Riley said.

Riley said that after nearly a week of most police efforts being aimed at rescue, the department, aided by the National Guard, was turning toward "more of a law enforcement mode now."

"We are targeting looters, we are targeting those who want to create mayhem in this city," Riley said.

However, the department is short-staffed: between 400 and 500 officers on the 1,600-member police force are unaccounted for, Riley said. Some lost their homes and some are looking for their families, Riley said.

"Some simply left because they said they could not deal with the catastrophe," Riley said.

Riley said police communications, especially with other agencies, is improving after a chaotic start.

"We have moved from chaos to organized chaos and now we are better organized," Riley said.

With thousands of active military, National Guard units and federal agencies continuing to patrol the city, "we feel that the city is very secure," Riley said.

At a news conference in Baton Rouge, Maj. Gen. Bennett Landreneau, head of the Louisiana National Guard, said he expected to have 21,000 soliders in 13 hurricane-affected parishes by the end of Monday.

Exactly. The reason you need to shoot looters is to restore order, not recover the TV.

That it will, in fact, restore order is one theory.

It may also provoke more rioutous behavior.

Hard to riot further if you're dead.

Indeed.

But those who are still living can still riot.

I respectfully submit that anyone else who rioted would likely be people inclined to riot anyway. I would further respectfully submit that most people, who are victims of the looters, would be relieved.

Shooting looters in times of civil unrest is hardly a new, untested, theory, after all.
