Here it is again.
You folks know what to do: rant, rave, complain and critize your favorite teams and players in this here place. Speculate who you think'll win this year's MVP and other awards. Bowl Predictions. PLUS... set your picks for each week's games here. But you haveta post a reply to say if you're playing along so I can keep track of your record. REMINDER: One cannot sign up to play after Week Three. Whoever has the best record at the end of the regular season gets the choice to bed either John Madden or Chris "Boomer" Berman.
Anywho, recent news...
· The Atlanta Falcons released Peerless Price after two crappy seasons. He may be employed next by the Eagles, who're severely lacking wide-outs.
· Two days ago, Peter Warrick was cut by the Bengals, but has been picked up by the Seattle Seahawks.
· Colts LB Kendyll Pope suspended for the entire season for violating the League's substance abuse policy three times. Substance used wasn't disclosed.
· After being canned by the Cowboys for injuring his quadraceps, K Billy Cundiff may be returning after a failed trade with the Jax Jaguars for their K in exchange for an undisclosed 2006 draft pick.
· Since the Eagles released DT Corey Simon, he's been getting interest from Seattle, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Indianapolis. It appears the Colts sealed the deal Wednesday night with a five-year deal.
· The Dolphins have been looking at possibly signing Tim Couch.
· Dorsey Levens may return to the Eagles after they lost Correll Buckhalter for the season. AGAIN.
· Billy Volek, the consistent back up QB for the Titans is demanding a trade; so is T Grady Jackson of the Packers.
He fixes the cable?

The Lions' offensive and defensive lines are 100% grade A monkey crap. The coaching staff has no clue how to use three outstanding recievers (make that two, as Charles Rogers probably won't make it out of the first game uninjured for the 3rd consecutive season). The only player worth anything is the kicker, and that's because the Lions can't get a touchdown when they start with a 1st down in the red zone.
That's all I got right now. I'm sure I'll have more soon.

OK, I watched the draft and I watched the off season deals, trades, and free agent pick ups. And now I’m watching all the pre season games via the NFL network ( greatest channel ever). I developed a mental list of players that need to be watched, and teams that need to be watched and paid attention to this year. I’m no expert, but hell none of us are. I’m putting that mental list to cyber- paper right now…
AFC East:
1) Patriots: Super Bowl champs a dynasty why not pick them?
Veteran to watch: Deion Branch, can the super bowl mvp translate heroics into David Patten numbers during the regular season?
Free Agent to watch: Tie Chad Brown LB/Tim Dwight WR/ST..both are older, but both can fill holes in the team’s depth and Brown can fill in for beloved Teddy Bruschi, and stay healthy? Dwight can surely help in returns and has great hands and speed at a number 3 wr or special situation receiver.
Rookie to watch: Logan Mankins OG/ Nick Kaczur OG…name the New England offensive line????? They just do their jobs no one famous there except maybe Matt Light. It will be interesting to see if either of these rookies get in there by week 5 or 6 and shore up the line or even start. This will be important for Dillon and for Brady taking less hits.
Offense
Wide Receiver 87 David Givens 10 David Terrell 86 Tim Dwight
13 Brandon "Bam" Childress
Left Tackle 72 Matt Light 70 Logan Mankins 65 Victor Leyva
Left Guard 71 Russ Hochstein 70 Logan Mankins 77 Nick Kaczur

Right Guard 61 Stephen Neal 71 Russ Hochstein 64 Gene Mruczkowski
74 Billy Yates
Right Tackle 76 Brandon Gorin 68 Tom Ashworth 77 Nick Kaczur 62 Jeff Roehl
Tight End 82 Daniel Graham 88 Christian Fauria 84 Benjamin Watson
85 Jed Weaver 47 Joel Jacobs
Wide Receiver 83 Deion Branch 80 Troy Brown 81 Bethel Johnson 14 P.K. Sam
18 Andre' Davis
Quarterback 12 Tom Brady 2 Doug Flutie 16 Matt Cassel
Running Back 28 Corey Dillon 33 Kevin Faulk 32 Kory Chapman
Fullback 35 Patrick Pass 90 Dan Klecko 39 Kyle Eckel
Defense
Denfensive End 94 Ty Warren 96 Rodney Bailey 91 Marquise Hill
Defensive Tackle 75 Vince Wilfork 90 Dan Klecko 69 Mike Wright
Defensive End 93 Richard Seymour 97 Jarvis Green
Outside Linebacker 55 Willie McGinest 59 Rosevelt Colvin 58 Matt Chatham
45 Wesly Mallard 43 Andre Torrey

Cornerback 22 Asante Samuel 23 Duane Starks 30 Chad Scott 26 Eugene Wilson
Strong Safety 37 Rodney Harrison 36 James Sanders 30 Raymond Ventrone
Free Safety 26 Eugene Wilson 29 Guss Scott 51 Don Davis
Special Teams
Place Kicker 4 Adam Vinatieri
Punter 8 Josh Miller
Long Snapper 66 Lonie Paxton
2) Buffalo Bills: The surprise team of the east. If they can beat NE once or twice they could win the division…theoretically. I won’t be sending bets to vegas though.
Veteran to watch: Obviously JP Losman, he looks really good in pre-season, but pre-season is pre-season.
Free Agent to watch: Mike Gandy OT/ Bennie Anderson OT….Buffalo needs an offensive line..they really need it, even with Losman’s ability to run a bit.
Rookie to watch: Raymond Preston C/ Justin Geisinger…Offensive line woes mean these rookies need to be able to shore up the line or hopefully be situational starters soon..real soon.
Offense
WR: Eric Moulds Sam Aiken George Wilson
Roscoe Parrish
LT: Mike Gandy Jason Peters Greg Jerman
LG: Bennie Anderson Justin Geisinger
C: Trey Teague Duke Preston Jasen Esposito
RG: Chris Villarrial Ross Tucker
RT: Mike Williams Dylan McFarland

RT: Ron Edwards Tim Anderson
RE: Aaron Schobel Constantin Ritzmann
SLB: Jeff Posey Mario Haggan Wendell Hunter
MLB: London Fletcher Angelo Crowell Liam Ezekiel
WLB: Takeo Spikes Josh Stamer
LCB: Terrence McGee Jabari Greer
Lawrence Richardson
SS: Lawyer Milloy Coy Wire
FS: Troy Vincent Rashad Baker Jim Leonhard
RCB: Nate Clements Kevin Thomas Eric King
Evan Oglesby
Special Teams
K: Rian Lindell
P: Brian Moorman
KO: Rian Lindell
LS: Jon Dorenbos
H: Brian Moorman
PR: Nate Clements Jonathan Smith
KR: Terrence McGee Josh Reed
3) New York Jets: They could easily be number 2 and threaten number 1, but they normally find a way to lose early and get hot late (the exception being last year). If that changes and things stay similar to last year then things could look up for one of the most underrated head coaches in football. I have no problem thinking they could easily be no 2 in the division.
Veteran to watch: Let’s see if Chad Pennington QB can stay healthy an entire year. Then the jets can threaten for number 2 and a wildcard slot.
Free Agent to watch: Laveranues Coles WR is really important for this team. I think he has a hell of a work ethic and will undoubtedly be the no 1 receiver.
Rookie to watch: Mike “frickin’” Nugent PK. All those field goals are going to add up and win some games. People forget how important a kicker is to winning sometimes, especially when you have a great defense, and a mid range offense.
POSITION PLAYER NAME
OFFENSE

4) Miami Dolphins: Surely a rebuilding year, and the first for Nick Saban. It will take a year for the systems to adapt and change, and who really knows if Saban can transition to the NFL. They will surely land in the no 4 slot in the division. And will Ricky help out or be a cancer in the locker room?
Veteran to watch: The entire defense. Yeah they have Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor and Sam Madison, but can the interior linemen hold their own? Will injuries continue to plague the secondary? How will Vonnie Holliday, Kevin Carter, and Junior Seau help, or are they all done? The defense will make or break a decent a season for Miami.
Free Agent to watch: I suppose it comes down to Holliday DE/DT, and his ability to be flexible at positions and staying healthy. Also Keith Traylor NT. The interior of the line needs help and it will be interesting to see how these 2 play out. Kevin Carter DE also needs to be solid and healthy. Man, this defense could be great or it could be afree agent bust/disaster.
Rookie to watch: Ronnie Brown RB, if he can be solid which I think he can then certainly the dolphins can trade Ricky, and let their crappy quarterbacks depend on the run and not be pressured to pass. Brown is the key to the offense, because I’m betting the QB position will be re-worked next year anyway.

I make no promise of getting through or to the NFC, so if someone can run that down...??? I'll get through the AFC before the start of the season though...

Based on what I saw Monday vs. the Rams, you're right. They looked awful. I've always liked Joey Harrington (grade A cutie, with those big dark eyes), but he looked woeful, Mooch looked like he had no clue. I mean, they made the Rams look like worldbeaters.
Now, if we do the weekly picks this year, anybody other than me gonna play? Cause it got very lonley last year.
For my own team, I'm thinking the Bengals will break through and post their first winning record since 1990 and go 9-7. They have a very winnable game Week 1 in Cleveland and return to Cincinnati for the Vikings. Their toughest out-of-division games this year...Colts, Vikes, Packers, Bills...are all in Cincinnati. And they get those Colts in late November, when the weather can tend to be awful.
We all wear a green carnation.

i will, once again, and sadly, die-hardedly support the jets. if the jets/giants pre-season game i went to was any indicator, they will finish with 0 wins. however, before and after that game, i honestly feel they're a contender and could upset the patriots by knocking them from the AFC east's lead
... if only they wouldn't lose to this years champion colts...

I'll try and play this year. It just depends on what night TK puts the list up for the week.

NEWS
· 2-time Pro Bowler and Lions backup QB Jeff Garcia broke his frigging leg. Now the Lions have no experienced QB on the roster with exception to Harrington.
· Tedy Bruschi wants to play next year. He's on the Pat's PUP list and continues to train with close observation.
· Recently waived DE Travis Hall formerly of the ATL, signed with the Niners.
· Ravens placed second-round pick LB Dan Cody on the IR. Cause is "damage" to his ACL and MCL.
· WR Freddie Mitchell was cut by the Chiefs. Also, RB Charlie Garner was cut by the Bucs.

I don't really have a reason, Jim. This is more like a guessing game for me.

The Bengals are a few players away from being a good team: Boomer Esiason, James Brooks, David Fulcher and Anthony Munoz.

Yeah.
I was "borrowing" an old Charles Barkley joke.
Years ago, when the Celtics were really bad, Barkley's team (Suns?) was in Boston playing the Celtics.
A reporter asked him about the Celtics, and Barkley surprised him by saying 'The Celtics aren't too bad...they're only a few players away from being really good.' (or something)
The amazed reporter couldn't believe it, and asked Barkley to explain some more:
"Just a few players away...Larry Bird and Kevin McHale'

I wish he was still playing. Barkley, that is.
But I'll save my complaints about the League and it's current roster of "superstars" for the 2005 NBA Thread.

And I still don't like Carson Palmer.
But you'll go with Dilfer instead?
And what's not to like about Palmer? He was getting better and better as the season wore on. Had he not gotten hurt in the game, I think he'd have led the Bengals to an upset of the Pats in December.

Since no one paid attention to my reviews.(so I'm not going to do anymore just to hear myself talk)..I'm just going to talk about some of the games. The Bengals defense will be surprisingly good this year and their much hailed offense will be sporadic all year. Even if they can remain relatively injury free I don't see them going over 8-8, and they'll probably be 7-9. I think the AFC North will be a letdown this year in terms of power with most of the inter-divisional matches going 1-1. I honestly think a team can win the AFC North with an 8-8 record, although 9-7 might be needed. Theoretically the Bengals could win the division if Roethlesberger is as overrated as I think, Baltimore's offense is as inept as ever, and Romeo has that 1 year headcoach learning curve I think he will.
That said I believe the Bengals will win against Cleveland in week one. The Bengals have to win 3 of their first 5 games or their season is done..Marvin Lewis knows this. The Bengals will win in week one.Braylon Edwards is relatively useless with Dilfer throwing 10 yard pass plays. And Davis being gone doesn't help. I don't see Cleveland winning over 5 or 6 games, which is respectable for Romeo's first year.

I have the Bengals going 9-7 with a win in Week 1 at Cleveland. I'll take 'em one game at a time. Yes, I've gone through the schedule and made my predictions for the season. I think 9 wins is reasonable.
And gentlemen, I think, sadly, that the New Orleans Saints will not exist anymore. Owner Tom Benson has really wanted to move the Saints out of N.O. z(or to get a new stadium or a renovated Superdome) and now he has his excuse to move. I heard a mention last night by Ted Koppel during the UofMiami-FSU game last night that, "The Superdome is to be brought down." This is in the midst of severe human tragedy Benson's excuse to move.

You would pick Greenbay over Detroit!

Nothing personal, man, I promise. I love Joey Harrington, but I can't pick them until they give me reason to. In the most realistic of the Preseason games, against the Rams on MNF, the Lions looked awful. They need to show me something.

Agree with every pick except Philadelphia vs. Atlanta;in that game,I think the Falcons will prevail in OT.

I'll be pleased if they win more games than the lose, irrespective of the playoffs. The AFC is such a deep conference now. If they go 9-7, I'm fine with that and call the season a success. THEN Marvin has to get them into the playoffs NEXT year.

I would think the 4 titles with Joe Montana and the 1 with Steve Young can serve as a salve for your Niner wounds...
