I hope to God that the Seahawks make it in. That's my fiance's team and one of us needs to be happy with the world of football.

I didn't care either way about the NFC game when it came down to Carolina/Seatle. Been watching it on and off tonight. Too bad it's been so unbalanced though -- when I'm watched a game I'm not emotionally involved with, I hope to see a good game on the field to watch.

I hate the Steelers. I've hated the Steelers since the 70s. The only rooting interest I'll have in this year's Super Bowl is rooting against them.

I don't want it to be a good game. I want the Seahawks to crush the Steelers. Or at worse, the Seahawks to beat the Steelers by 1 pt.

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) -- A 17-year-old high school student said he was humiliated when a teacher made him sit on the floor during a midterm exam in his ethnicity class -- for wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.
The teacher, John Kelly, forced Joshua Vannoy to sit on the floor and take the test Friday -- two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Broncos 34-17 in the AFC championship game. Kelly also made other students throw crumpled up paper at Vannoy, whom he called a "stinking Denver fan," Vannoy told The Associated Press on Monday.
Kelly said Vannoy, a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School, just didn't get the joke.
"If he felt uncomfortable, then that's a lesson; that's what [the class] is designed to do," Kelly told The Denver Post. "It was silly fun. I can't believe he was upset."
Vannoy was wearing a No. 7 Broncos jersey on Friday, because he is a fan of John Elway, the Broncos' retired Hall of Fame quarterback.
Vannoy said he was so unnerved he left at least 20 questions blank on the 60-question test, and just wants out of Kelly's class because he's afraid the teacher won't treat him fairly now that the story reached the media.
"I'm going to have to deal with him for two more nine weeks [school quarters] and he's going to want revenge somehow," Vannoy said Monday. "I took the test. I'm shaking. I'm furious. I didn't know what to do."
Kelly, who wore a Ben Roethlisberger jersey Friday, and his principal, Thomas Karczewski, didn't immediately return messages left on their school voice mail Monday.
Big Beaver Falls Area School District Superintendent Donna Nugent said she was aware of the situation, but said confidentiality rules prevent her from commenting specifically.
"We'll take whatever action we need to in order for the student to feel comfortable," Nugent said.
_________
This teacher needs to be disciplined for his inexcusable behavior and extremely poor pedagogy (were any other students made to sit on the floor and endure paper being thrown at them during this exam?).

Assuming this is what happened, the only acceptable course of action is to fire the teacher.

The quotes from the teacher do not show him denying the events.
But even I wonder if dismissal is too severe. Formal reprimand for the permanent file, suspension without pay, and a letter of apology to the student, together, all sound OK to me.

This teacher, assuming this is what he did, has lost the trust of the students and the parents. He cannot teach. There are rules, perhaps they are unspoken and unwritten, but they are there. A teacher cannot be a bully. This teacher, if this is what he did, is nothing more than a bully, and the lesson he is teaching is that it's okay to bully someone who does not agree with you. Maybe certain government officials (cheap crack, I know) think that this kind of behavior is acceptable, but I most certainly do not. This behavior, assuming this actually happened (I can't stress that enough) is unacceptable.
Ask yourself, Jim, if it happened in your daughter's classroom, not to your daughter, but to her classmate, would you want your daughter in this teacher's class? Would you want anyone in his class? I think that's the way you have to look at it. A class room is not a frat house.

I understand all of that, but in judging whether or not to fire him, I would genuinely have to look at the totality of his performance, his work history.
Maybe I'm just sensitive to people losing their jobs.

It's important to be sensitive to people losing their jobs. The fact is, this is the guy's profession. But his actions influence generations of students. How can he make up for this, when this is his response? Quote:

That's a proper response from someone who should be a teacher? I'm sorry, but this guy needs to find a new line of work. Let him stay on through the end of the year, and then let him go. That should give him enough time to find something to hold him over while he goes back to school to get a job that won't give him the opportunity to teach that something clearly wrong is right as long as it's done in good humor.

The thing is, though, I would think if this is his attitude that it would have manifested itself before now (his delight in finding belittling his students funny or something one shouldn't get upset over).
But you are right: I would not want my daughters to take any of his classes. Especially if he's a goddamn Steeler fan.

I'm guessing there is an untold story that happened between the student and the teacher. Perhaps the student teased the teacher in some way, prompting this kind of response. Still, immaturity at the highest level cannot be accepted. Had the teacher taken responsibility and appologized, perhaps I would not have such an extreme opinion, but it's that lack of caring that he was wrong, and his lack of owning up to his mistake that bothers me more than the mistake itself.

Super Bowl predictions, anyone?
I predict that we will see some very funny commercials and have no memory of what they are advertising.
I also predict that the half time show will be as enjoyable as last year's half time show. Hopefully, the single band half time shows will continue after this year.
I further predict a slow first quarter, with one team finally getting it's running game going in the second quarter. The team to take the lead by ten first will win, unless that team is Seatle, then Pittsburgh could still have a shot.
Finally, I predict there will be a winning touchdown to seal this game, be it a come from behind score, or a tie breaking score, and it will be on the ground.

As a warmup for my Virtual Tournament,I ran two possible versions of the Super Bowl through WhatIfSports.com's Sim Match system:one with Seattle as the home time, and another with Pittsburgh as the home team. The links for the box scores of each game are here:
Super Bowl XL Scenario #1
Super Bowl XL Scenario #2
Let's just say you shouldn't bet the mortgage on Seattle taking home the Lombardi Trophy.
