Bush admits Terrorism has causes beyond "hating freedom" AND Bush takes blame for Katrina failures Now, this puts the right wing posters on this board in a bit of a bind. They have to either admit that they were wrong in defending Bush by saying it wasn't his fault, or they have to call Bush a liar and shun him for ever. I think maybe he's full of shit on these and just giving some lip service to win back some approval, but it's nice to see him admit he was wrong for once. Now, that's one admission down, 759 to go.

I never saw Clinton do that once until they found a dress with some cum on it......and even then he was forced to do it.

I'm pretty sure Bush, and his supporters, have acknowledged than things other than hate contribute to terrorism in the past. Unlike his detractors, however, he (and we) don't think those factors serve as an excuse.
In regard to the other matter Bush accepted responsibility for the failures of the federal government in response to Katrina (which was discussed on that thread, in fact), not the failures of the state or local governments. I don't believe that anyone here has ever argued the federal government was 100% failure free in the response to Katrina, only that other factors also contributed to the situation, many of which were out of Bush's control.

how many people died due to Clinton's negligence in an emergency? In fact, for fun we can tally the number of americans who died under Clinton and the number who died under Bush and write the names down on little scraps of paper. Then we can crumble up the paper and have a snowball fight.

I've only seen them say "they hate our freedom" and other things to that effect. The problem with admitting other factors is we'd have to publically open the can of worms that has been our contribution to the problems of the mid-east and the CIA's training of terrorists.

Wow, you're like a one man crisis just retconning the hell out of things. You should work for FOX News writing the scripts were O'Reilly says he never said something despite video evidence showing he did say it.

I'm fairly certain there were hurricanes during the Clinton administration. I am also fairly certain that people died in same. I similarly certain that, at the time, the policies and procedures in place were similar to those in place under Bush. However, under Clinton, there was not a huge rush to assign blame for those deaths to the presidency directly.
I could also point out that there is a school of thought that says Clinton's negligence in hunting Bin Laden (who was planning 9/11 long before Bush took office) allowed him to put in place his attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon. However, that that discussion has been done to death on another thread.
More importantly, however, even though Bush took responsibility for the failures of his administration, in a "buck stops here" show of contrition, that is still a long cry from saying that Bush was negligent or that his alleged negligence is directly responsible for those deaths.
Again, the go over the same ground we are now going over and over on multiple threads, if you say Bush's negligence contributed to the deaths you need to also admit that the negligence of other federal, state and local officials, including your beloved Clinton, also contributed to those deaths.

but did people die in hurricanes due to inaction?
did clinton start a war and conquer a country without a clear plan for maintaining it?
and the people on the right had entire organizations offering money to women to come forward against him, fox news was getting started during clinton and they blamed him for everything.

let me add that bush was advised bin laden planned to attack. sure without exact specifics it would've hard but they still should've taken action and raised precautions.

Silly r3x. It used to be a lie, but now it's not. Like how smoking pot or ditching 'nam is something horrible depending on what candidate did it. It's a matter of perspectives.

okay, they shouldn't have waited for the higher ups to get off their asses and give them orders. Clinton isn't a public official.
Even if our high officials bothered to care about the poor, mostly black victims of Katrina enough to change their schedules, the administration would probably have bungled the relief effort anyway, because the Federal Emergency Management Agency is now run by political hacks appointed by Bush who know zilch about disaster relief.
"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job," the president said to Michael Brown a few days before the FEMA chief was relieved of his oversight of the relief efforts after massive public pressure over the agency's response to the hurricane. Brown, who reportedly doctored his unimpressive resume and didn't have a background in emergency management, resigned Monday. He had secured this plum job because he was a college buddy of his predecessor, Joe Allbaugh, who managed Bush's 2000 presidential campaign.
During the Clinton years, FEMA was turned into a model of efficiency, as demonstrated after the Northridge earthquake and the Oklahoma City bombing. How bizarre, then, that in the wake of 9/11, the administration handicapped FEMA by axing its Cabinet-level status, turning it back into what some call a "turkey farm" for patronage jobs and slashing its budget because, as Allbaugh complained, it had become "an oversized entitlement program ."

No, I see how you could get that from my post, but I was talking about a double standard regarding the presidential candidates and their pot-smoking and vietnam-ditching tendencies (from both sides). A double standard about pretty much everything, really, that was just an example.

Never thought I'd say this, but I miss Tricky Dick. Oh, yea, he definately wanted out!
A little anecdote. I forget what year this happenned, probably '72. There was an ongoing protest at the Lincoln Memorial. Late one night Nixon decided to go out and talk to them. He grabbed a few Sec Serv guys and walked the short distance from the White House to the monument and talked about the war to the protesters!
No press conferance, no media, no motorcade. He simply spoke with his opponents and walked back to the White House. Contrast this with the August events this year in Midland, TX.

one thing about Nixon (and pre-reagan presidents) was they really were of the people and wanted to be respected as much as elected. A great speech is Nixon's concession after losing for California governor. He talks very frankly with press but is still respectful. I'm sick of Bush talking down to everyone like they're stupid for disagreeing with him.

He was when he was President. And when he was president he could have, just as "easily" as Bush, spent more money on the levees. But he didn't.
And he could have, just as "easily" as Bush, fixed the levees during his administration, but didn't.
Therefore, if Bush is to blame, and other officials are to blame then Clinton is at least also partially to blame.

Not true. The assassinations, attempted assassinations, of previous presidents, or certain attacks on others, have generally led to tightening of security a little more each time.
For example, at the time of Lincoln's assassination, the President did not have secret service protection, only a bodyguard from the local police force.
It wasn't until the assassination of President William McKinley, Congress provided Secret Service Presidential protection.
Following the assassination of President Kennedy, Congress passed legislation for protection of of former Presidents and their spouses during their lifetime and minor children until age 16.
As a result of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination, Congress authorized protection of major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and nominees.
In 1995, following the Oklahoma city bombing, the Treasury Department shut down the two blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue directly in front of the White House, putting up barricades that, to my knowledge remain to this day.
Furthermore, as noted in Slate magazine (in defense of President Clinton), secret service protection gets stricter with each passing year:
During the Kennedy era, the Secret Service employed fewer than 500 people and had an annual budget of about $4 million. Then came Lee Harvey Oswald, Squeaky Fromme, and John Hinckley. Now the Secret Service payroll tops 4,500 (most of them agents), and the annual budget exceeds $500 million (up 300 percent just since 1980). At any given time, more than 100 agents guard the president in the White House. Top aides from recent administrations are adamant: The Secret Service never lets the president escape its protection.
So what the Secret Service allowed Presidents to do during the era of Nixon is, in all likelihood, quite different than what is allowed today.

I'm starting here since you managed to screw up the quote' on the final post. You've got r3x saying what I said and me saying what r3x said. Please correct.
G-man brought up a good point. Is the Sec Serv controlled by the President or is it the other way around?
Has the security apparatus surrounding the Pres become a Praetorian Guard whose chief goal is self preservation and enhancement of its own power? In the post Hinckley days Presidents have become increasingly isolated from the people whom they govern. Are the people well served by this situation?

Reuters Says Bush Photo Not 'Malicious,' Reports Wide Interest
By E&P Staff
Published: September 15, 2005 4:30 PM ET
NEW YORK With confirmation today that an accidental photo of President Bush at the United Nations on Wednesday, writing a note to Secretary of State Condeezza Rice about a “bathroom break,” was indeed real, newspapers around the U.S. and abroad are now planning to run it widely. But many, it seems, will treat it as something more than a joke.
A source at the Washington Post tells E&P that the paper is considering it for prominent play tomorrow morning, in the context that, at least in some minds, it raises questions about overall perception of the U.S. at the United Nations, right or wrong. Reuters reports extremely strong interest in the photo today.

U.S. President George W. Bush writes a note to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice during a Security Council meeting at the 2005 World Summit and 60th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York Sept. 14, 2005.
The fact is, according to Reuters -- and this has not been widely reported -- President Bush did indeed take a bathroom break after passing the note to Rice.
This apparently raised some eyebrows around the room, because American representatives (among others) have a reputation for suddenly bolting, though normally for a far different reason than this latest one. Fair or not, the European press has already had a field day with the photo, often centering on the notion that Bush had to ask Rice for permission.
The Times of London, for example, ran no less than three separate articles about it on its Web site, one at the top of its front page. (It's a Murdoch paper.) One headline reads: "Excuse me Condi, can I go to the bathroom?" Another story, believe it or not, opens: "The need to relieve oneself diplomatically has on occasion determined the fate of nations." The third discusses the sordid history of the particulatar lavatory in question, and contains this passage: "Medical experts said that the 59-year-old President was wise not to wait any longer."
The headline at the BBC news site suggested that Bush had been "caught short" at the U.N. summit. The Irish Examiner headline? "To Pee or Not to Pee, That is the Question."
Since the photo first appeared on the Web late yesterday, speculation has centered on whether the bathroom break reference was just a silly joke and who had written and passed the note.
Gary Hershorn, news editor-photos for the Americas at Reuters, told E&P today that the photographer, Rick Wilking, informed him yesterday afternoon that he had observed Bush pass the note to Rice, and a little later, rise from his seat, leave the room, and then return.
And while some have suggested that Wilking, a well-known photographer just back from taking some of the most gripping images in New Orleans, was out to embarrass the president, Hershorn said that the photojournalist had no idea what Bush was writing on the paper. Wilking assumed the president was taking notes on what some other official was saying.
“Rick had no idea what he was shooting, or what Bush was writing,” Hershorn said. “If Rick knew what he was writing we'd have 25 pictures of this, not two.”
The photo was taken at 12:08 p.m. and it was Hershorn, about three hours later, who took the trouble to examine the photo closely. It was only then that he noticed the writing and decided to put it on the wire after 4:00.
The photo, as E&P observed Wednesday night in the first story about the incident, shows Bush scribbling in pencil on a note that already holds the words: "I think I may need a bathroom break? Is this possible." Wilking is a veteran Washington photographer who has long covered Bush campaigns and the White House.
As for transmitting the photo, Hershorn says, "There was no malicious intent. That's not what we do."
There's a simple explanation, even a serious one, for all of this, he adds. Bush, he points out, is not used to attending meetings at the U.N. and probably did not know what the protocol was for exiting a room and returning. His question to Rice was “proper” and not all that surprising, “asking someone with more experience there about protocol,” he said.
Wilking told Gelf magazine today that he has not yet heard from the president—whom he says he knows very well—about the note. “I’m curious to know what the White House thinks,” Wilking said.
well, i'll say. He's certainly thinking and jotting down the big thoughts.

Maybe it was just a poem. I've heard he likes to write about real things and real people.

Further evidence that he's bizarro Bush: he can write.

Oh, for the love of God... and people can say the press isn't liberal with a straight face...It is very clear that the comment "I think I may need a bathroom break?" was written in block letters by a person other than the one responding to it in this photo. The hand in the photo, if it is President Bush's, is clearly writing not only in script, but at a slightly different size, with a different amount of force than the person who wrote the block comment. I imagine at trained handwriting analyst could note far more inconsistencies between the two areas of text.

Don't rain on whomod's parade.
He thinks this is the final "scandal" that will lead to Bush's impeachment.
