IGN compares PS and GC versions of MGS

Considering that one of the biggest gaming franchises out there is heading to GameCube this fall, things are surprisingly quiet around Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. Chalk it up to the fact that Nintendo likes to start its hype machine a bit later than most companies -- or perhaps too much emphasis was placed on the fact that Twin Snakes is simply a remake of a PlayStation classic -- but while many GameCube owners are talking about Mario Kart, GameCube's upcoming MGS just isn't on most gamers' radar yet.

The irony is that Twin Snakes may be a much bigger upgrade from Konami's PlayStation classic than Mario Kart: Double Dash!! from Mario Kart 64. Released in 1998, Hideo Kojima's seminal action adventure still packs quite a punch, but it's easy to mix up gameplay features introduced in the sequel with what was possible in the first game.

So far, Nintendo has only shown the first level of the Silicon Knights-developed GameCube update, and while the graphical upgrades are definitely the first thing you'll notice, there's more to Twin Snakes than meets the eye. To give you a good, well-rounded idea of what's changed in the GameCube game, we snapped these comparison shots from the original game (we even ran it on our old, grey PlayStation to see the game the way it was originally released). Scroll down and take a closer look -- and we think you'll agree when we say that snakes do belong in Alaska.
