I know Loeb isn't a favorite here, but I'll ask anyway:

What's the deal with the Batman/Superman series he writes? I flipped through the TPB that collects the first 6 issues and the Secret Files, and that book was odd.

It started off decent enough (the first issue was about the differences between Batman and Superman, and featured a "meeting" of Bruce and Clark as kids), but the later issues looked bizarre and over the top.

Luthor is wearing the SuperFriends (or whatever it's called) armor again? It looked like he went off the deep end, too. He wasn't the careful manipulator that he was shown to be in Morrison's JLA.

Is Batman/Superman part of continuity, or is it Elseworlds rubbish?

Bless you in advance.

It had a long story arch that took place in an altered timeline, but the majority of B/S (including the Luthor story and Supergirl story) falls under main DCU continuity.

What other stories did B/S (ha) cross into?

What was the explanation for Luthor's erratic behavior? He was subtle about his war with Superman before, in this book he was flaunting it.

It all seemed very out of character.

There was no explanation as far as I could see. It was VERY badly written.

As a result of the story, Luthor is no longer President of the U.S. in the DCU. B/S also introduced the new Supergirl (post-Crisis Kara Zor-EL) to the DCU. She has her own comic book now.

The best explanation I can come up with is this: Throughout the "Public Enemies" storyline, Luthor was using a mixture of liquid Kryptonite and Venom (the same Venom that Bane once used) to enhance his strength. In issue #6, Batman notes that Venom has been known to cause mild cases of insanity. Or something to that effect.

In other words, Luthor's erratic behavior was due to drug use.

Ok, so Luthor went from uber smart megalomaniac to crazy man bc. of drugs ("Just say no!" ), but how do you explain how Loeb went from good writer (ex., TLH one-shots in the early '90's) to hack (see: anything written from the last few years)?

I've been reading S/B from the get go and recently dropped this title. Got tired of waiting for it not to suck. How it's possible to take two of the most popular characters in the world and make their title boring, I'm still trying to understand - neverthelees, it is quite an accomplishment to have done so...a sad one, yes, but an accomplishment nontheless...

Loeb was never THAT good in the first place. I'm sure those stories he made long ago, although enjoyable, were ones he's had in his head forever... so he could revise them over and over until they're perfect. Now that he's on the clock, he's pressured and showing he's not capable of monthly work.

Remember, those were one-shots.

Yeah, but TLH wasn't just a one-shot and was good - DV was ok, but still better than the crap he's churning out today... it just strikes me as a total 180 in his quality of work, is all.

See, I never thought The Long Halloween was anything better than average. Maybe reading the individual issues had a different effect than when I read it in trade. I don't know. I found the story to be transparent and figured out the ending before I finished with the first couple of issues. And Hush just seemed to follow that same structure of one mysterious enemy, but in the end you find out it wasn't just him. I haven't read Dark Victory, so I'm not sure how that turned out. At best, Loeb was your standard comic book writer. At worst (i.e. right now) he's an absolute hack.

Agreed. I think TK is right, Loeb's running dry. The best thing he could do is take a little time off. He's proven that he's capable of writing good stories, if he's given enough time to work them out better.

Not sure about that, but Superman/Batman had promise in the beginning with the first arc. But each arc after Public Enemies just keeps getting worse and worse. First he rehashed Silver Age stuff (some of which I didn't mind), now he's recycling newer stuff and adding in Marvel charact...er...ripoffs. The Supergirl arc was decent, and Absolute Power had awesome potential...but it crapped out something fierce at the end. This arc doesn't make sense, seems to have little plot, and has too many cameos and nods. Like I said before, I'll be happy when Loeb goes to Marvel (sounds like a movie title). Hopefully Superman/Batman will be left to someone capable of bringing out the book's full potential.

He'd be great. Though I would love to see Dan Jurgens take on art duty. I don't mind a lot of today's hot teams, but I'd love to see some old school writers and artists, who know the characters better, on the title.

Thank you! Jurgens gets the confident, strong, and powerful Superman better. It'd be a breath of fresh air compared to the whiny sumbitch we got in some of today's comics.

When is Loeb leaving? And are there any rumors about who will be taking S/B? It's bad enough that I won't be picking up Ultimates, Vol. 3 bc. Loeb's taking over, but if say Millar and Hitch for example were to switch over and take over S/B, I'd add it to my pull list again. Just put some real talent on that book - its Batman and Superman for crying out loud! They should not suck as badly as they do in Loeb's hands.
