What with Joey Styles recent return to major league announcing, and Coach's continued shittyness, I thought the time was right for a look at the announcer's bench. Who do you guys think is the best, and worst, in each position? Who is the best of all time? Is it Bobby Heenan, and if not, why not?

Coach has actually taken ENORMOUS strides with his announcing. You want to talk about a shit announcer, I've got two words: Michael Cole.

They're not really good announcers, but I like the duo of Earnest Miller and Josh Matthews. This is especially true if the match they're calling has A-Train.

How can you forget Bobby "the Brain" and Gorilla Monsoon?

I also like Mike Tenay simply because that bastard knows EVERYTHING! He's know a lot of wrestlers for most of their careers. I remember watching the Eddie Guerro DVD with a match that WCW co-sponsored with a Mexican promotion in Mexico, and Tenay was there calling it. Then, later, when Eddie was fighting Chavo in the Bash at the Beach Hair vs. Hair match, Tenay references the previous match because it was a Hair vs. Mask match.

I'll tell you two announcers who really surprised me: Konan and Stevie Ray. When WCW put them on the mic after coming off their injuries, I was really surprised how well they did. Konan talked like a pro, knew the moves, and sounded like you'd expect an ex-football or baseball player would call a game. He was much better at the announce table than in the ring, wrestling or on the mic. And Stevie Ray was just fun to listen to. He talked like he thought it was real. "Why would he do that? That makes no sense." I never laughed so hard while watching wrestling.

Those two MADE Monday Night wrestling!

Monsoon and Heenan were aweshome. Monsoon also worked well with Jesse Ventura. when Monsoon would occasionally slip into lala land and say some bullshit, Jesse would always call him on it. it was great because those were some of the few times Monsoon had no response. but he and Heenan were gold.

as for currently the best: Joey F'N Styles.
because he can call everything. he can do play by play, he can analyze, he can be as serious or funny as needed. he's great timing. and this is the key: he helps push the story that's going on in the ring. plus, he's got the best catchphrase for an announcer ever: "OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Mike Tenay's grasp and knowledge of wrestling history is unparalleled, but he can be a little bland at times. I find he works best in the three man announce format, generally. He's having to carry Don West right now, which doesn't help his work.

Question: how the FUCK did the man who used to hawk baseball cards on Home Shopping Network get a plum job like that? He's awful and, whenever he talks, I hear the Opie an' Anthony bit of him selling Britney Spears' virginity. Great bit, bad announcer.

I don't mind Tenay, but he needs someone to do pure color commentary. Shane Douglas could be a help (he's an awful "interviewer"). Maybe get Zybysko to do the color commentary once his storyline with Raven ends.

Zbyszko was great on the mic. he'd be a great color man for them. he'd also be a good manager.

But surprise surprise,he is already having trouble with Vince!
Vince thinks he calls too many moves, and doesnt like him calling moves that he has never heard of.

I think you can tell that Vince is in his ear all the time!

I gotta say my favourite Styles moment had to be when he was ripping Awesome apart at One night stand last year!
That was fucking hilarious!

Let it go, Joey. Props to Foley for playing Devil's Advocate during that match. "If WCW offered me that much money, I'd wear a leisure suit and hit on fat chicks too."

which just goes to show two things: 1.) Joey's doing his job right. and 2.) Vince has his priorities ass backwards. He's got a bunch of half wit roid freaks stinking up the ring on two separate shows and he's bitching about Joey's announcing? Please.

Tenay's downfall in TNA is he is forced to do PBP due to West's ignorance of the business. Tenay is great as part of a group but not the PBP.

Monsoon and Heenan have to be the greatest duo of all time.

Agreed. Tenay is a good announcer to help establish a wrestler with his knowledge of that guy's accomplishments elsewhere to a fanbase that may not know him. But he can't carry a show by himself.

I liked Schiavone. Damn shame to be fired by Vince twice. I also enjoyed the heel commentary of Mark Madden.

I used to like when Tony & Jesse were the commentary team for WCW.

Thats not strictly being fired!
It all depends on what his contract said as to whether he was actually fired or not!
