Actually - and God help me here, I think this post heralds the Endtimes - I agree with Nowhereman. Say what you will about 80s glam-metal (and, in many cases, you're right), but Motley Crue was a great metal band. You can point to "Without You" and "Home Sweet Home" as cheesy ballads (in the case of HSH, screw you, that's a good song), but I'll match you with "Looks That Kill", "Too Young To Fall In Love", and the whole damn Dr. Feelgood album as examples of how hard they can rock. Micky Marrs is an underrated guitarist, Nikki Syxx is a solid bassist, and Tommy Lee is one of the top five drummers of the time.

So there...let the Apocalypse begin.

I agree with you. Dr. Feelgood is one of the best albums.
Montley crue is here in Canada touring right now. Tommy Lee has an injured wrist and they asked Harvey from a local band, 1-900, to fill in. Harvey has always loved Montley Crue and missed out on the chance to open for them the last time they were here (my friend's band won the competition). Now Harvey got the chance of a lifetime, to actually play in the band on tour! I think it's great, Harvey is an amazing drummer.

At the age of six, I began to outgrow and get bored with most of the shows aimed at kids my age. And, with advent of VCRs still a few years out from its widespread growth, sci-fi was only limited to the movies.

Then, turning on PBS one evening, I happened to come across something.....bizarre. A tall fellow with a very long scarf, buggy eyes, and curly brown hair was running away from a few trashcans yellings the words "Exterminate!". My little American brain couldn't quite fathom what it was I was watching. The accents were so....alien. The special effects.....alien. The characters...especially the one in the scarf....alien.

It was the absolute un-American-ness of this strange and bizarre little show that refused to let me change channels. I began watching....watching as this crazy bastard in the scarf smiled and conned his way out situations and scenes. Watching as he defeated these horrible creatures....with absolutely no weapons at all...save his immaculate mind.

'No weapons'?? A...'Police'...'Box'?? A robotic dog?? A time machine that's......bigger on the inside than the outside??

What the HELL was this insane mess??

And then, they leave it all on a cliffhanger?! I have to wait until tomorrow to find out how he gets out of it?! And that music!! Screeching, and weird, and booming, and terrifying (for a six year old)!!

THAT'S how I became such a fan. It was the weirdest, oddest, neatest, most bizarre thing I had ever laid eyes on, television-wise. The concept was brilliant and simple: A mysterious, alien time traveler that can't quite control where he goes, and, wherever he ends up, gets involved in righting the injustices and taking care of the little guys.

Who can't love something as pure, and limitless as that?

And to this day, it's the only thing that brings the same giddyness I had as a child. Unlike comics books, or other forms of entertainment and fiction, Doctor Who grew up with me. It was around for a decade before I was born. And, with this new series, has been rejuvenated for an entirely new generation, and an entirely new century. It's as close to being it's own character as any show.....damn near eternal.

I fucking LOVE Doctor Who. And that's why.

Thanks for asking...

Question #9:
Being a Canadian who pretends he lives in America (and even provides an American forwarding address if you mail him), your love of British entertainment seems quite weird.
Has this love of Brit culture made you ever think that you would move to this sceptered isle or do you just consider us a novelty?
(I take it you have at least vistited)

Yeah, my fiance and I visited back in 2004. We rented one of those long boats and traveled the canals from Manchester up to Wales. All in all, we spent about two weeks tooling around the back country of your lands. Beautiful. Sure, there were the normal cow pastures, and sheep herds. But, there is a very unspoiled landscape to certain parts of England that you just cannot find here in America.

Real shops that serve real food. I'm certain there are the normal franchises. I even spotted a McDonalds in Chester (?is that the name?). But, all in all, it felt very un-commercialized. The pubs (especially in Wales) aren't like the ignorance-infested drunken crowd that you find in most bars here. There were people actually talking, and laughing, and just enjoying each other's company. And, above all, there wasn't this constant overlay of loud, obnoxious music drowning everything into a dull hum. That was more than refreshing.

And, to be honest, we discussed the possibilities of moving there. But, in the end, it would be extremely expensive to move across the ocean without the proper jobs to meet us. I'll never say never. But, if we did, we'd probably try and live up in the hills of Wales. And we'd invite you up every weekend to make fun of the locals.

Don't get me wrong. There are plenty of things I don't like about England, or its people. There's an unspoken arrogance in some that is extremely off-putting. Of course, I'm certain you could find that anywhere in America, too. Also, while one half of the people are sincerely friendly and jovial, the other half are withdrawn and cynical. Again, probably not that different from America.

Still, if I had to weigh it all out, yeah, I would love to go and live in England for awhile. Just to see if it brings me as much joy as it does now...

Question #10:
Going back to Doctor Who for a second, if you could time travel qould there be a specific era you would like to go to and any historical figure you would like to meet?
I know when I was fighting the Nazis in 1941, I remember seeing you partying with Hitler, so I know the answer to this question already!

Ooh, sharp hit! You bastard.

If I could go back just once, it would be to check out Jesus Christ, the actual historical figure, to see what seperates fact from fiction. If I could go back multiple times, or, anytime, I would go kick Hitler in the nuts. Also, I'd like to smoke a cigar with Churchill, have coffee with Einstein, give Gengis Khan the finger (and run), and, tell Kennedy to FUCKING DUCK!

Other than that, it would just be random cruising through the timestream, picking up ignorant servant girls for company...
