So what are the chances Vince'll make him drop the Sabu gimmick and instead have him be something ridiculous, like a wrestling pastry chef?

From PWT Quote:
Recently it was announced by Terry "Sabu" Brunk that he had signed a contract with WWE. Many had suspected that he had been signed for the rumored ECW revival in September, but we can reveal that he has actually been signed to wrestle on WWE's flagship show, RAW. As we understand it, Sabu will be renamed King Sabu, and will wrestle with a new gimmick involving him being a balding virgin. He will spend most of his time being mocked by the other wrestlers and will often be seen crying in his locker room. It's unknown at this time if he will be able to do a shoot promo where he gets all his facts wrong.

Snarf takes Sabu to court to sue him. During questioning, Sabu leaps from the witness box holding a chair wrapped in barbwire & smashes Snarf across the skull! Sabu wins the case!

WWE officials have talked to and/or offered contracts to The Sandman, Ball Mahoney, Francine, Lance Storm and Justin Credible.
The standard contracts being sent out to former ECW stars for this new ECW project are one year deals with an option for two rollover years at WWE's discretion.

For ECW fans, the impossible dream may be about to become a reality. WWE has entered negotiations to book the former ECW Arena on Saturday 6/24 for an Extreme Championship Wrestling house show in Philadelphia, PA. The venue, which has been remodeled since the company shut down operations in 2001, is now known as the New Alhambra Arena.
During ECW's legendary run, the former Bingo Hall was the base of operations for ECW during its rise into a cult phenomenon in 1993, hosting major ECW events every few weeks. It was also the site of the company's first PPV, Barely Legal, in April 1997.
With the reputation of having the best ECW shows, the Arena was a throwback to the legendary old "smoky arenas" where the in-ring action was so intimate that you could end up with the ECW stars landing in your lap, diving over (or past you) into the third row onto their opponents, or even decimating your entire section of seating during bloody brawl. The venue quickly evolved into a special destination point for hardcore fans to converge from all over the globe for major events. Many of the fan chants and antics that have become synonymous with ECW over time were born in the venue, which was considered at the time to have the greatest of any ECW venue for atmosphere.
The last official Extreme Championship Wrestling event held in the building was December 23, 2000, headlined by then-ECW World champion Steve Corino defeating Justin Credible and the Sandman in a Three-Way Dance that saw fans throw dozens of chairs into the ring. The undercard featured Mikey Whipwreck and Yoshihiro Tajiri defeating the FBI in a best of Three Falls bout, Jerry Lynn defeating Spike Dudley, CW Anderson defeating Super Crazy, EZ Money defeating Nova (now known as Simon Dean), and a six man tag featuring EZ Money & Julio Dinero & Chris Hamrick defeating Tommy Dreamer & Christian York & Joey Matthews (now known as MNM's Joey Mercury). Other stars who appeared included the final ECW World Tag Team champions Danny Doring and Roadkill, Da Baldies, Rhino, The Blue Meanie, Chilly Willy, Bilvis Wesley, Balls Mahoney, Joey Styles, Joel Gertner, and Cyrus.
Since ECW shut down operations, the venue has become a haven for independent wrestling promoters. Hardcore Homecoming has run several successful events in the venue, shattering it's all time gate record last June for their debut event. Other companies past and present that have run the venue since ECW closed it's doors include Combat Zone Wrestling, JAPW, Pro Wrestling Unplugged, XPW, CHIKARA, IWA Mid-South, Ring of Honor, MLW, MECW, Women's Extreme Wrestling, among many others.
TNA is slated to make their debut in the Arena on Friday 6/9, with a show titled "Hardcore War" that will be headlined by AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe vs. Christopher Daniels for the X-Division championship.

The official website for Dayton, Ohio's Nutter Center confirms that the 6/7 WWE event will be "WWE vs. ECW Head to Head" on their events page. a 20 man Battle Royal is listed as the main event, with a number of WWE Raw talents listed as appearing. The website does not list any "ECW" talent beyond Rob Van Dam at this time.
The show is officially billed as "WWE and See No Evil present WWE vs. ECW Head to Head." Ticket prices are listed as $42, $32, $27, and $22. For more information, visit www.nuttercenter.com/, then click on "Upcoming Events."
As mentioned this afternoon by PWInsider.com, WWE will be taping a 2 hour special that will air later that night on the USA Network to promote that weekend's ECW One Night Stand PPV in New York City.

Our pal Devin Cutting sent word that The USA Network's schedule for Wednesday 6/7 lists the 9 PM-11PM timeslot as "To Be Announced." We have heard that the "WWE vs. ECW Head to Head" special would be a two hour special, so it appears that it will air on 6/7, either live or via tape delay.
Devin also sent word that the 2 AM replay of AM Raw is now listed as "To Be Announced" on the USA Network website for the entire month of June, which will strongly add to speculation that WWE's revival of Extreme Championship Wrestling may be slotted in that timeslot. There is nothing confirmed beyond that at this time,

It’s being said that after all the meetings today, Vince McMahon has decided that ECW would take the place of Velocity.
Basically what would happen is, the show would be taped prior to SmackDown! every Tuesday until a new time slot is secured in the United States. For the time being it would only remain an internet property show. Negotiations are going on to attempt to get it on U.S. television.
As Velocity is the Smackdown junior show, it would make a lot of sense to move the cruiserweights onto ECW as ECW had a good record with lucha wrestling (didnt it actually give it mainstream exposure in the US for the first time?) and without Velocity, we will prolly never get to see the cruiserweights again!

no, the first mainstream exposure for lucha libre in the US was AAA's When Worlds Collide pay per view from Nov. 94. this ppv was co produced by WCW. it's been whitewashed away by the Mahon view of history.

i would say NITRO was the first mainstream, or the PPV that Grimm talks about, really ECW never made it onto the mainstream radar until its final year of existence.....
i think its death made it sort of Jim Morrison like, people think of it something bigger than it was. it was great wrestling, great angles, and great performances but not really what the general public consumes....

Yeah. ECW really was a niche market. It drew in a certain kind of fan. It was more of a cult fandom than a mainstream one. Comparing ECW fandom to that of WWF/E or WCW is like comparing the fandom of Bukaroo Banzai to that of Star Wars.

ECW was never really mainstream. in fact, publicly they were all about being "counterculture" and at the time, they were. a lot of what they did was absorbed into the big two's programming where it was first seen. the mainstream is mostly only hearing about ECW in the last few years, after the fact.
basams may have a point. Nitro probably did expose more people to the lucha style. I'm not sure how well the AAA ppv did. I do know that in the early nineties AAA was making inroads into the american market (mostly california, I think) and doing pretty well before they got cherrypicked by WCW.

i would say without looking at numbers and from casual fans i run into that more people at this time have heard watched tna than ecw at its peak, remeber when ecw was on RAW you still couldnt watch it unless you lived in PA or had a big dish, or bootlegs, or the PPV

I would say TNA is only now gaining mainstream recognition. It, as of yet, does not have a consistent prime time spot. Until the past year or so, most people haven't even seen a TNA show. I'd say that they're probably on par with where ECW was as far as its mainstream status, though I'm sure ECW had more of a cult following.

i hear alot of "have you watched the other wrestling on spike" , and when ecw was at its peak only a few people ever watched it, youd here about them on RAW but outside the diehard wrestling fans like those posting here i dont think so. this is subjective on my region, so i dont know about everyone elses experience.
but i would say that even though tna has yet to peak they have drawn over a million viewers already. im not sure ECW ever did. this isnt a reflection totally of the product, im betting spike is available in millions more households than TNN was, and the internet promotion machine is waaaay ahead of what it was then. so given the same playing field im sure ECW would be more popular in its prime than tna is at this point. but tna isnt in its prime.
and i would if head to head at the same period in time TNA would eventually eclipse ECW. ECW would eventually hit a growth plateau, the stroylines, and violence would turn off general audiences at some point, while TNA offers the same high energy action but with stories more for general audiences. if you have a family of 5 watching tv, you get more ratings and a broader demographic, that just the teenage guy and his dad. if you have a family of 5 buying tickets you sell 3/5 more tickets than the teenager and his dad, more merchandise ect.

TNA has also been helped by the removal of WCW from the scene. WWE just isn't as capable of snagging talent in the numbers that they and WCW used to do together. TNA has maintained a very good roster over the years. Its non-traveling, taping 2 days a month (1 day for PPV and one day for shows) allows them to keep their costs down on production and contracts since their wrestlers have time to do other shows to earn money. Overall, it's a smarter business plan than Heyman had. But, as you said, it wouldn't have worked ten years ago without the internet being as big and capable as it is now.

I think the other thing TNA has going for it over ECW is the worldwide audience! From what I know, ECW had a brief airing over here towards its end, but even that was on a backwater channel! TNA (while a week behind) gets a lot of exposure as its on a channel totally devoted to wrestling (strangely called The Wrestling Channel). With the added exposure through the internet (lets face it, the internet was nowhere near this big during ECWs days, and the net helps spread the word quicker than just about anything). Factor in the fact people are tired of WWE and want an alternative, where as ECW was around during a time when WCW & WWE were going head to head in the ratings wars (quite possibly the most successful era for both brands).
I was always under the impression though that ECW was more mainstream than it obviously was, but maybe thats as bsams says, the Jim Morrison syndrome!
I think WWE will try to push ECW as a TNA style show, so the lucha/cruiser style would then be their answer to the X-Division!

I often think of ECW being more mainstream too because of my friends were diehard wrestling fans and we searched it out. But in reality it wasnt that well known

The other thing that's helped TNA is that they've been quicker to get merchandise out to market. They're very quick to put out DVD's, whereas if I recall, ECW only just started to come out with home entertainment at the end of their run.

the thing with ECW is that at their height, they appealed to fans who were sick of what WWF and WCW were doing. they really were a niche market, although they were growing, mostly through word of mouth and magazine coverage. I read about them (and their predecessor Tri-State) for years before I was able to watch a show.
when I did finally get to see it, it was like "this is what's been missing! this is what I've been wanting to see but haven't been getting for the most part!" cuz I was pretty sick of most of what was being put forth by the big companies.
which is a situation not unlike the present day.
