I have heard ECW is giving $1500 a week guareenteed contracts with a yearly rollover clause and the usuall wwe 90 day release clause. TNA is paying non contracted workers $500 a shot, and contracted workers $1500 a month plus $500 for each tv taping.

This is for the non upper tier guys such as AJ, Sting ect they have seperate deals, as I'm sure RVD will in ECW.

Sabu wasnt considered a key guy by TNA, and alot of their reg talent is under the standard contract so ECW is already offering a better deal right off the bat than most of the roster can get in TNA.

Initially I heard that the ECW contracts were for $75000 a year, but just recently like bsams said, the figure being thrown around is $1500 for the higher paid & $500 as the minimum, rather than a yearly base rate.
On top of PPVs etc, its believed that merchandising will also be a decent extra income for anyone signing to ECW.

I think its just another indicator that Mahon is just trying to deprive TNA of a talent pool of "name" wrestlers!

There are guys out there who dont need the money, and guys who will refuse to work for a WWE owned company out of principal, but nobody can be mocked for wanting to earn as much money as they possibly can.

Also from a wrestler standpoint it would prolly appear you would have a better chance at the WWE "big money" by going through ECW rather than TNA.

I think the Christian Cage and Dudleys defections may have alot to do with this. Some of their main concerns were that if they weren't gunna get big money, then they would rather have a lighter schedule. This could accomadate guys who are burned out on the road till they are ready to go back full time.

That's why I keep holding out hope the Jericho and TNA will happen at some point, simply because, from what I've heard, he doesn't NEED the WWE big money.

The only thing with Jericho is that I feel he would see it as a step down.
The guy has a lot of asperations as an actor, singer & DJ, so I think being a wrestler in anything other than WWE would be viewed by him as not being a star!

Theres already talk that a lot of old ECW guys will only work part time schedules for ECW, so thats another thing that indicates this is being formulated as the TNA direct competition!

Dont forget, when Sting has been approached by WWE, one of the key things that put them off was his insistance on being part time, as they never liked the idea of part timers!
Thats obviously gone out the window with the ECW brand as they blatantly wanna follow the format that TNA has taken. (I dont include Undertaker in this part time thingee as he was already a WWE talent when he took the step down)

An ECW show is expected to debut on The Sci-Fi Network on June 13th at 10 p.m. The debut date, nor the time slot are official at the moment, but both are likely at this point. The show will be taped prior to the Smackdown television tapings in Trenton on the same night. A press release is expected to be released on Tuesday from The Sci-Fi Network. ECW will be getting a 12-week tryout run.

Sci Fi Channel is getting into the ring with wrestling.

The cable network is following its NBC Universal sibling USA Network into a deal with World Wrestling Entertainment for a weekly series devoted to a WWE spinoff league, Extreme Championship Wrestling.

Beginning June 13, the yet-to-be-titled series will air at 10 p.m. Tuesdays on the network through the rest of the summer. Bonnie Hammer, president of USA and Sci Fi, hopes the latter channel gets the same ratings lift that USA has gotten from WWE's "Raw."

"This is going to be a great summer series for us," Hammer said.

She cited research documenting an overlap among Sci Fi's viewers and WWE fans. "It's a huge duplication," she said. "Close to 50% who watch 'Raw' watch Sci Fi as well."

As for how a wrestling franchise fits within the parameters of the Sci Fi brand, Hammer said the series is being developed to match the sensibility of the channel's "stretching the imagination" theme. "It will have a nice little twist that will fit in the brand," she said.

While the ECW is scheduled to run only in the summer, Hammer did not rule out extending its run year-round a la "Raw" if it proved successful.

"ECW on Sci Fi will push the boundaries of sports entertainment in new and unexpected ways," WWE chairman Vince McMahon said.

In recent weeks, WWE has been incorporating ECW into its story lines, positioning it to be a standalone series opposite "Raw" and UPN's "Smackdown," which will continue next season on the CW. The ECW franchise also has been a brisk seller for WWE on DVD and pay-per-view since McMahon acquired the brand in 2003.

Of all the cable outlets that could have hosted ECW, it never crossed my mind that they'd go with the Sci Fi Channel. I figured they'd go with MTV or USA.

Mr. McMahon has announced that in an effort to boost the new ECW brand, Paul Heyman will be given two draft picks, one from RAW and one from SmackDown.

WWE.com caught up with Paul Heyman and this is what he had to say: “Well, first of all, I don’t think Mr. McMahon gave me anything,” said Heyman about his two draft picks. “I think ECW earned the right to have a draft pick from RAW and from SmackDown. And if you want to know whether I’ll reveal this information tonight, then you’ll have to tune in and find out.”

We can also confirm that Paul Heyman and will be having a debate on tonight’s WWE RAW.

Mick Foley said this to WWE.com: “We’re having this face off to clear up a couple of myths – namely one about me being some kind of prostitute,” said Foley. “If anybody has stood up for what’s good about sports-entertainment, I think it’s me. And if indeed I am a prostitute, then I’m just one with a new pimp named Mr. McMahon. And all things considered, I’d rather prostitute myself for Mr. McMahon than a low-life like Paul E.”

now that should be good. even if both of them aren't what they were a decade ago, it'll still be better than most Raw/Smackdown matches.

The history of ECW
ecw.com

In 1993, a young promoter named Paul Heyman had recently been handed the reins of Eastern Championship Wrestling. Seeing that the world of sports-entertainment was in need of change, Heyman decided to take the fledging company and kick it into overdrive. Bringing in a collection of fearless wrestlers like Tommy Dreamer, the Sandman and Sabu, he began staging events that offered fans a breathtaking mix of brutal action and cutting-edge wrestling. The result was Extreme Championship Wrestling, a hardcore promotion whose fearlessness and innovation caused a tremor that is still being felt today. With its take-no-prisoners mindset, ECW quickly won a loyal following whose fevered chants of “ECW! ECW! ECW!” rang to the rafters of the bingo hall the company called home.

By the beginning of the millennium, ECW had grown from local sensation to national phenomenon. ECW stars had been seen on Monday Night RAW and had brought the company to The Nashville Network (now Spike TV). However, mounting financial pressures would prove to be the company’s undoing. In 2001, Heyman was left with no choice but to file for bankruptcy.

Although it seemed ECW was dead, the company refused to stay buried. The war cries of “ECW!” were still heard in arenas everywhere and in 2004, The Rise and Fall of ECW went on to become one of the highest-selling DVDs in WWE history. The success of last year’s pay-per-view event ECW: One Night Stand at last set the stage for one of the most dramatic and unprecedented returns ever seen.

Now that ECW is back, all bets are off and sports-entertainment will never be the same again. Brace yourselves, things are about to get Extreme!

so, a few years ago, mahon did a promo (and i don't exactly recall what reason he made the promo) about, basically, saving ecw and retro-actively citing himself as the financial supporter of ecw in its final few years -- even before it, publically, became a wwe name brand.

now, certainly, mahon is a master at re-creating his own history ... but is there any truth to what he said?

quite a bit, actually. Both the WWE and WCW were at one time paying Heyman as a consultant. I believe the deal with Mahon formalized around 96/97 (I don't mean it began here, but I believe it became more than the previous deal as Mahon also had relations with USWA and SMW at this time. the ECW became more like those in this period. also I think the WCW deal ended around this period.) with the brief interpromotional appearances that they did (ECW wrestlers crashed a ppv held in Philadelphia, then a year later, to help promote their first ppv, Mahon gave the ECW wrestlers some match time on Raw (it wasn't entirely selfless, they needed them to fill out the roster due to a european tour).

Mahon also made payments to Heyman to help keep the company going when they were looking for a replacement deal after the TNN debacle. This is largely why Mahon was able to acquire the brand during the bankruptcy hearings.

Scott Williams covers a lot of this in his book: Hardcore History. it's a good read.

Jesus Rob, I think its pretty obvious when & why he made that promo, and a pretty damn important moment in wrestling history in fact!
It was last year in the lead up to One night stand, and the reason it was so important is that for the first time, Mahon, Heyman & Bischoff were in the same ring!

I know most of WWEs product is forgetable these days, but that was a pretty good "Holy shit" moment for any wrestling fan!
Of course, it didnt feature Hogan, so thats probably why you forget so quickly!

# WWE officials contacted David Heath (Gangrel) last week. Heath will likely be signed for the ECW brand in the near future. If and when he is signed, he will be a part of this special "vampire" faction.

# For some reason, Axl Rotten no showed last night's edition of RAW. He was scheduled to invade the ring alongside Balls Mahoney, Tommy Dreamer, Sabu and the other ECW wrestlers. Due to his no show, Rotten has put himself in jeopardy with WWE management. Rotten is currently listed on the Superstars page on ECW.com.

In a bit of a late breaking development, Justin Credible has signed on with WWE for the new ECW brand. As a matter of fact, the day his no-compete clause with the MTV project expired is the same day he signed his contract with WWE. Credible is scheduled to be at tonight's ECW vs. WWE special on the USA Network.

Credible makes his return to a WWE-owned brand for the first time in over three years. He was released in early 2003 after falling by the wayside on the RAW brand. During a period of his time away from the mainstream scene, Credible reportedly worked at a Target department store.

During last night’s SmackDown! tapings in Wheeling, WV, while Tazz was talking about ECW, he then went on and accepted Lawler’s challenge at ECW One Night Stand, and said he would choke him out on Sunday. Tazz then went on to say he’s “officially going home” and resigned from WWE. He said he enjoyed his time but it was now time to go home. He shoved the microphone in Cole's chest and walked away. Paul Heyman was there to greet him with a big hug.

Nice report there bub, specially seeing as:
a) It was Tazz who made the challenge to Lawler
b) I had to edit the quote because its said "resigned from ECW"

Several weeks ago, when PWInsider.com broke the news that WWE would be reviving Extreme Championship Wrestling, fans around the world went ballistic with their hopes that it could be as special as the company that once shocked and changed the wrestling world from a Bingo Hall in Philadelphia. With Sabu, The Sandman, Francine, and others signed to contracts, fans were hopeful that it could either be the ECW of old (not likely) or some kind of alternative to the flat feeling of Smackdown and Raw where cartoon characters and vignettes, not wrestling, are the flavor of the menu.

It started strong, with Joey Styles' (whatever happened to him?) excellent rant against sports-entertainment. From there, it sputtered downward, to the point the same fans who were running around all excited and anxious for June 11th to get here so they could see ECW One Night Stand are now shaking their heads and wishing they weren't going to the show.

WWE issued a press release several weeks back that they were going to take ECW global, shoot it differently, and provide a different form of entertainment, allowing their fans to have not two, but three unique brands to choose from. So, how come there is nothing unique about this new ECW yet? How come WWE has done nothing to build this brand.

Don't believe me? Let’s look at ECW One Night Stand first!

THE GRUDGE MATCH WITH NO BABYFACES

Mick Foley and Edge attack Tommy Dreamer, who pops up on TV with no explanation at all and no reason for fans to actually care about him, since the last time he was on TV, he was powerbombed through a flaming table a year ago. Foley and Edge then lay out Terry Funk, who at least the fans cared about since they beat him down in his home State. Paul Heyman got Edge to agree to a match at One Night Stand, and since then, Foley has been going back and forth with...Kurt Angle for the last two weeks?

That's a dream match in many ways, but isn't Foley wrestling Dreamer and Funk? You know, Tommy Dreamer, the guy who is the heart and soul of ECW? Well, why is he treated like he's Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch by WWE? Wouldn't it make sense to explain why Dreamer wants to defend ECW, much less get revenge for getting punked out on television, especially when he's the ONE PERFORMER in the match that will be part of the new ECW brand?

Now, I can see WWE apologists explaining it away as that ECW fans will know these characters. Well, if you are truly building a brand, wouldn't you want, say, all the fans to want to care about Tommy Dreamer and Terry Funk? Wouldn't you want fans to know the history of Mick Foley with those two? No, it's more important to trot out the Hardcore title, a belt meant to mock ECW's Hardcore matches, and confuse the fans by creating an issue between Kurt Angle and Foley, who aren't wrestling on the PPV.

Meanwhile, WWE has a match with no babyfaces, just two guys who got beat up and have yet to explain why they want vengeance. Think about it: You have a tag match to sell for a PPV this weekend, yet none of the babyfaces, including Terry Funk, one of the greatest promo guys ever in wrestling, has had one segment, one interview to explain what they are going to do to Edge and Foley, much less why they want to do it!

THE ECW MATCH WITH NO ECW STARS

Kurt Angle is drafted to ECW, which is great on paper, because he's one of the best in-ring talents this generation will ever see. Angle shows a ton of aggression and it's pushed that he's going to have an open challenge for anyone in a 4, 6, or 8 sided ring. Fans are buzzing if WWE is going to bring in Daniel Puder, or maybe toss Sylvester Turkay in there. Could it be a TNA guy jumping? No, it's Randy Orton, who is awarded for his suspension with an immediate PPV payday.

The only problem is, well, actually, there's a ton of problems here. One, why is Kurt Angle in ECW when he was the one trying to ruin the show a year ago? WWE Creative doesn't want you to pay attention to that. Just ignore it because, uh...Oh yeah, it's that new vision of ECW. I'll get to that in a minute.

Of course, why is Randy Orton on a PPV for a company that he never had a thing to do with, wrestling another guy who has no reason to want to wrestle for ECW in the first place? You can make a case for both Edge and Angle being there, because from an ECW fans' point of view, they carry the type of work ethic and heart that ECW fans want to see. Worse still, Orton got more mic time last night than ANY talent that is supposed to be part of this "new brand."

So now, ECW fans, who paid (at minimum) $100-$250 for tickets on Sunday, get to watch a glorified Smackdown bout. Does anyone in WWE get that the reason fans want ECW back in the first place is because they don't enjoy what they are getting on Raw and Smackdown? If so, why are you booking that match on an ECW PPV?

THE ICON? OF WHAT?

WWE hires Sandman, the Extreme Icon of ECW, whose ring entrance was the highlight of last year's PPV. Yet, as of this writing, we are five days away from the PPV...without one mention of his name, one attempt to market who he will be wrestling, or even a promo to explain who in the world he is. No, he shows up, looking like one of a bunch of thugs and proceeds to cane the brim of John Cena's hat. No match, no explanation, just, “Hey, it’s the Sandman.” This explains to the audience they should care about him, why? You can insert every other former ECW star who was hired and ask the same question. Why should fans care about them? Beats me! At least Sabu got a music video.

HEAD FOR THE HILLS, IT’S VELOCITY!

Of course, then we get to last night’s beating of John Cena. While WWE may see it as Cena threw down first, so ECW laid him out, it came off like a bunch of nobodies just beat the hell out of the WWE champion, because that's what WWE has portrayed the ECW stars as...a bunch of nobodies. In fact, they are worse than just nobodies. They are nobodies who run at the first sight of Big Show, Trevor Murdoch, Matt Striker, and Lance Cade hitting the ring.

Think about it - Sabu and Terry Funk are running away from the guys who can't get a win on Velocity? Yes, that will certainly make the average fan want to turn into Sci Fi every Tuesday. If WWE ever actually tells the fans that ECW will be on Sci Fi, that is.

Perhaps WWE will remember to do that, when they finally get over this grand new vision they have for the new Extreme Championship Wrestling. Now, let’s discuss that farce.

THE FALSITY OF A NEW ECW VISION

There is a new vision of ECW - it's called Raw with Vampires.

WWE keeps throwing around all the cool buzz words that they want to get over with their corporate stockholders when it comes to launching their version of Extreme Championship Wrestling. sports-entertainment, new vision, etc. etc.

There's only one problem with this new vision of ECW. None of the fans who WWE wants to, you know, actually watch and support ECW, want a new vision. They just want their ECW, the way they liked it. What a concept, eh?

I don't mean the way ECW used to be, either. It's not that fans want a never-ending nostalgia run of ECW. They don't even want the same old talents, beyond a few hardcore legends. All the fans want is the old ECW work ethic packaged in a way they can watch, attend, and support. They want biting drama and emotion. They want one hour a week and when ECW is in town, three hours a night, where they can go and love wrestling the way they used to - by seeing guys go all out and enjoy themselves and play off the energy of the fans. To those fans, ECW was a home team. To the wrestlers of that company, it was home, which is why they all still romanticize about it, even those who were owed large sums of money when ECW died.

All true wrestling fans want is a chance to watch the new roster do their thing. WWE would rather throw out the "new vision" phraseology as a way to mask the truth, which is that this won't be ECW as anyone knew it before or as anyone who saw it previously truly wants it. Let's call a spade a spade and not beat around the bush - this new ECW is going to be a glorified extension of Raw and Smackdown, playing off the old ECW name. That's it. WWE has done nothing to show anyone otherwise, nor will they do so, because that’s the best they can come up with under their current creative regime. While Paul Heyman and Tommy Dreamer might be involved in the process, it’s obvious that they don’t hold the cards or the power, because neither of them would allow ECW to be treated this way.

HOW TO LAUNCH A NEW WRESTLING COMPANY: THE MCMAHON WAY

Now, before anyone throws up the words I'm just bitter that it's not the old ECW, the truth is that this shouldn't be the old ECW. I wrote a long, long column about that weeks ago. That ECW is dead. From a business perspective, it failed. From an artistic perspective, it was never anything but a complete success. All WWE has to do is follow that motif, package it the way WWE does with their other projects, and let it run. So why is WWE launching ECW from a half-assed perspective?

First, let's ignore the obvious - Vince McMahon going on his website and demeaning and downplaying ECW’s history and fan base, the same fans that resurrected the company by shocking the world with the sales of the Rise and Fall of ECW documentary.

No, let’s get right into the marketing of this new ECW itself.

What was the big storyline to bring back ECW? Oh wait, there wasn't one. "Hey Mick, you know ECW's coming back, right?" said Paul Heyman. Yep, that was it. That was the big dramatic moment. It rates really high on the scale of drama in WWE’s world, right under the time the Godfather and his Hos popped up to keep Viscera from getting engaged to Lillian Garcia.

How about that WWE vs. ECW special that will air this Wednesday. Well, it sure was good to see a bloody John Cena challenge Sabu to a singles match after Sabu put Cena through a table during the first segment on Raw, right? Oh wait, that didn't happen. Not even on WWE.com’s Unlimited! No, the big dramatic announcement there was a posting on WWE.com, as opposed to announcing it on the flagship series, Raw. That will sure help fans find out about that match, and certainly was far less important than the lone mention of a 20 Man Battle Royal where ECW stars can be faceless performers against a sea of faceless WWE stars. It’s only the WWE champion, after all.

Of course that special could go a long way towards launching ECW’s new TV series. Hey, how about that ECW TV series on Sci Fi, anyway, right? Yes, it sure was cool to see all those promos announcing it, eh? Yep, you got the picture. No promos. No mention. I just hope the next thing on the list isn’t, “No ratings.”

The line that WWE will pass out internally is that creatively (it always goes back to creative), they aren’t far enough along in their storylines to promote these things. I call Bullsh**. The problem is that, much like every other brand WWE will be running, ECW will be held under the scrutiny of Vince McMahon and his creative team and this will be his vision of what he thinks ECW should be. It will have the same haphazard builds and illogical plotline holes that Raw and Smackdown do, because it’s all coming from the same source.

ECW is going to be everything that the original ECW revolted against, unless things change now. It’s not too late for WWE to realize they’re going about this the wrong way. All it will take is one person, Vince McMahon, to admit that just because his way has made him a ton of money, doesn’t mean another way can’t make him that money as well. It's going to fall on McMahon as to whether he lets the golden goose lay him the eggs, or whether he has it rubbed out, gangland execution style. He's already going down the path to the latter.

Yes, It’s possible things will be different a month from now and everyone is celebrating the new ECW, raining praise upon it.

However, it’s also very possible that ECW could very well become the XFL of 2006 – with Vampires!

Ok, more inconsistancies from WWE!

Firstly Rey Mysterio on team WWE calls the ECW guys a bunch of punks!

Now supposedly Heyman was only allowed to draft two WWE stars, so why is Nunzio in the ECW locker room?
I can understand Al Snow & Stevie Richards as they aint been on tv in ages, but Nunzio is a SD regular!

It should be noted there are two entrances, the standard WWE titantron, and the smaller traditional ECW entrance!

Two commentary teams, the RAW team of JR/King & the ECW team of Styles/Tazz!
Firstly this totally shits on Smackdown by not having the brand represented, and also gives away Tazz's defection two days before its shown on tv!

See, I'm skipping this tonight, partly because I forgot it was on (way to promote the special, Vince, if I fucking forget two days after you plug it on RAW). Instead, I will be watching my newly purchase TNA Bound For Glory DVD (stores didn't have the Samoa Joe DVD yet, dammit).

Hold on a second, why is Orton wearing RAW colours?
Does this mean SD has lost another main eventer?

How many does that leave them now?

ECW are made to look like total punks in the battle royal with Angle being the last man in the match for ECW!
Big Show & Orton are the last men in the ring for WWE and Orton eliminates Angle!
But hold on, whats this?
Big Show tears off his RAW shirt & he is wearing an ECW shirt underneath!
ECW win, but of course it had to be a "new" ECW star that wins it cause they are better than "true" ECW stars!
