so, a few years ago, mahon did a promo (and i don't exactly recall what reason he made the promo) about, basically, saving ecw and retro-actively citing himself as the financial supporter of ecw in its final few years -- even before it, publically, became a wwe name brand.

now, certainly, mahon is a master at re-creating his own history ... but is there any truth to what he said?

quite a bit, actually. Both the WWE and WCW were at one time paying Heyman as a consultant. I believe the deal with Mahon formalized around 96/97 (I don't mean it began here, but I believe it became more than the previous deal as Mahon also had relations with USWA and SMW at this time. the ECW became more like those in this period. also I think the WCW deal ended around this period.) with the brief interpromotional appearances that they did (ECW wrestlers crashed a ppv held in Philadelphia, then a year later, to help promote their first ppv, Mahon gave the ECW wrestlers some match time on Raw (it wasn't entirely selfless, they needed them to fill out the roster due to a european tour).

Mahon also made payments to Heyman to help keep the company going when they were looking for a replacement deal after the TNN debacle. This is largely why Mahon was able to acquire the brand during the bankruptcy hearings.

Scott Williams covers a lot of this in his book: Hardcore History. it's a good read.
