Does a tree fall int he forest if no one is there to see it? It all depends upon how much weight you place upon the reliability of your nervous system and its ability to respond to stimuli. But otherwise, no: if you hold open your fridge so that its only one or two cms away from being closed, you'll see that the light switches off.
