Actually, I could give less of a fuck about lipstick lesbians. I've never read Batman comics for the sake of reading about sexual issues.
Also, I share Rob's POV that the expansion of the Bat-"family" is ridiculous. What adds insult to injury is Didio saying that Batwoman is an attempt at making a Bat-character who doesn't have a dark Background--Which is stupid. So what if the other character's have dark history? That's Batman's entire thesis.
Furthermore: Batwoman? What the hell is that? It's not scary, it's clumsy. It degenerates the urban legend aura that supposed to surround Batman. If people see that there's a Batboy, Batgirl, or Batwoman, it's just going to become obvious that the Batman is a real person. The name "Batman" is like a superlative. When you hear it, you expect this monsterous half man half bat creature. "Batwoman", however, is denoting a woman wearing a bat costume.

I don't buy the urban myth thing and I never have.
If Batman were real, he'd be just as much a part of pop culture as he is as a fictional character in the real world. There would be Bat-women, Bat-dogs, Bat-kids, Bat-boys, Bat-maniacs, Bat-mites et cetera, around everywhere, mostly as living jokes, not serious crimefighters. And there's not a damn thing Batman could do about it.

the urban myth theory is great for year one stories, and ridiculous afterward. it'd be a cool lil aspect to hang on to, but it just doesn't make any sense once batman has been around for a few months, single-handedly cleaning up the city.
a much better twist would be to establish a meta-human myth about the character.
yes, everyone's gotta know by now that batman is real -- but that doesn't mean they have to know everything about him. it bothers me when batman is fighting some punk, and the punk says "i know about you, you don't kill" ... how the fuck would he know that?
there should be widely spread rumors that batman kills people. or is a vampire. or has meta human powers. or is actually an army of 60 batmen.
that keeps the "myth" aspect alive, without being (very) unrealistic.

To me, the problem with "Batwoman," "Batgirl," "Huntress," "good Catwoman" etc., is less that they take away from the "urban myth" aspect and more that it is just too "Supermanish."
I wouldn't mind it so much if the "Bat females" were treated as, for lack of better term, 'fans' who are inspired by Batman and try to imitate him (sometimes with a fair amount of success), but are generally considered by him to 'posers.' However, even when DC tries to portray Batman in that way they always end up making him the big "dad" of some sort of "Batman family."
And, that's not what I want in a Batman portrayal.

i am also against the batfamily's batdad.
but, if the need for other characters is there, i am for the batgeneral.
i.e; batman makes the rules. there is no "damn you batman, i'll do this my way." no. its batman's house.
i actually enjoyed the spoiler-as-robin mini arc, because of her carrie kelly-like need to follow batorders. in most every case, she did as batman told. no questions. sure, she'd bring up a silly little request or difference or whatever, but it got shot the fuck down with a word or a glance from the dark knight. debate over.
this was something ("oddly enough") handled excellently by the BTAS crew. during the WB "batteam" era, batman called the shots. the end. the protests that occurred were either fatal to the relationship or quelled within moments or dealt with harshly.
in recent years, the batfamily comic book portrayal has been awful. its whiney and debatey and there are no rules and there're too many people.
huntress, azrael, orpheus, spoiler, catwoman ... there's like 600 x-factor's in gotham.
my batman wouldn't tollerate that. it wouldn't be "oh, that huntress! she does things i don't like!" rather, batman'd concentrate on taking her out of the picture as fast as he would a random villain. you don't get a chance to prove yourself right -- if you don't follow batman, who is clearly a strict and driven individual bent on a specific order ... you're out.
