This movie is visually stunning. The shuttle and boat scenes conveyed a great sense of urgency and was fantastic to watch.

Agreed...

The guy who played Jimmy Olsen was dead on.

Very agreed! It was the first Jimmy that wasn't annoying to me in the least. Also, thought Cyclops did a great job for the part he had.

His portrayal was wooden and showed no difference between Clark and Superman.

Mmmm, I don't know. I liked him. Guess I wasn't expecting too much, really. Although, Reeve's Clark will always be funnier...

Too much of Donner's movie's plot and jokes were thrown into this one just so Singer could make his Donner love child.

Actually, this is exactly why I liked it so much. But, then again, that's what I wanted to see...

He tells us Krypton is destroyed but then shows us it blowing up just so he can recreate the original opening sequence.

I loved it!

Sure there are homages to the first two films, but I wouldn't call them "wanking over" those films. It comes off as less of a "wanking" and more of the inclusion of certain themes, cues, phrases and jokes that one would expect might crop up in any sequel. Seriously, if that means Singer was wanking over Donner, then every director who made 007 say "Bond, James Bond" was wanking over "Dr. No."

Very agreed!

The rest of the time, Lex comes off as cool, in control, and fairly badass.

Agreed!

If Singer deserves the most credit for anything in this performance, its casting Routh. Not unlike Hugh Jackman in "X-men," Routh shows that Singer wisely understands the utility of casting an unknown who can make you believe in the character, instead of a "name," who makes you think "hey, its [insert name] wearing a Superman costume." No complaints.

Agreed...

Likewise, the supporting cast, from Frank Langella as Perry White

Actually...I think he was my weak-link. I very much prefer the chain-smoking, fast-talking, verge-of-a-heart-attack Perry from the original films (can't remember his name, but, he directed a few seasons of MASH) that the Spidey films' J. Jonah Jameson outright mimicks...

to Parker Posey

Did a helluva job with such a small part!

to Lex's henchmen (who weren't at all bumblers like Otis)

Oh how I miss Ned Beatty's Otis-burg...

The only two cast members who didn't work for me were Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, and "the kid."

Actually, while Lois grew on me, I simply loved the kid. It's not like he had to act or anything. He's a damn kid, and acted like a kid. I thought he did a damn good job, and was the least annoying child actor I've ever seen...

Furthermore, little nods to the first films (like Lex finding a new supply of Green K in a museum that JUST HAPPENS to have a collection of rocks from...Addis Addiba)(like Ma Kent having a snapshot of Glenn Ford as Pa propped up on the piano)

Caught both of those, and loved it all the more!

However, about fifteen minutes later, with the producers realizing that they need to show Superman defeating Luthor and saving Metropolis, and faced with an expanding Kryptonite land mass, decided to throw their own internal logic out the window and have Superman save the day by....

...picking up the giant, Kryptonite-laden, island, the one that nearly killed him by stepping on it a few minutes earlier, with his bare hands and carrying it into space.

No problem there. From the moment he told Lois good-bye, he flew up into the sunlight, grabbed a massive recharge, and then, intended to sacrifice himself. And, almost did. You could see he was tapping every bit of his reserves in doing so, as well...taking him to his mortal limits. As I said, no problem with that...

the inclusion of the kid in the storyline hurt the film...and probably the chances for a good sequel.

TOTALLY disagree. Singer achieved more actual progression with the mythos of Superman in two-hours, than the comics have in sixty-years. It's about time he and Lois had a kid. And, I simply don't see this as being a problem for sequels. I want to see more about this, as the lineage of Kal-El continues on. Loved it...
