The scene beating the guy up in the diner never worked in either version, in my opinion. It was too out of character for Superman. So that for me is a wash.

As far as the other point, let's face it: Singer was bound and determined to put "Super Son" in a movie so he could make his heavy handed, self referential, message about adoption no matter what.
