I rented movies many years ago, but that was before I got cable tv..with HBO and Cinemax and Encore, etc, as part of the package....
Renting is a pain because of having to take movies back...
And the aforementioned reasons in this thread.
Also, I ALWAYS ran the bloody tapes back!!! But almost always got them NOT run back so that I had to run them back before I could play 'em. ( this was before DVD's came out. )
And availability is a factor, too....

It amazes me that, in a world with almost infinite entertainment choice, there are people who can't come up with anything better to do on a Saturday night than rent Ultraviolet.

But that's the thing. They wouldn't improve their bottom line by charging late fees. Late fees are why people flocked away from Blockbuster to other options. Why do you think so many Blockbuster stores participated in the "Forgive All Fees" promotion? But by the time Blockbuster snapped to and made the change, it was too late. Why drive to Blockbuster to hopefully rent a movie or game, only to end up either with whatever was available, or a scratched up copy of a flick when the Netflix copy is generally pristine and comes on a "want-a-movie" basis?

Blockbuster also has an online service. You only get charged $6 if you rent it at the store. Why are you paying to rent a movie from 1999, when you can spend the same amount to buy it at BestBuy/WalMart/Meijer/Target/etc?

So they won't do it. But my point was if they could get away with it, not that they could get away with it.

But not everyone rents enough movies to make the monthly fee worthwhile.
For example, my parents hardly rent movies and certainly not $20.00 a month worth (or even $10). For people like that, a blockbuster makes more sense.
You have to understand: I'm not saying that Netflix doesn't have a better business model these days. I am saying that the business model isn't based on altruism or anything other than a desire to turn a profit. They are no different than any other corporation.

Actually, Netflix's business model is to put mom n' pop video stores out of business, reduce consumer choice and jack up their prices when people don't have anyplace else to turn. They've more or less said so in industry publications.
I really don't get why people rent old movies for 4-6 bucks when they can own them for ten bucks or less.

Coupla my boys used to work for a local vidostore. Cockluster bought it out and turned it into the vile cesspool it is today. It was run by some sleeze bag guido lookin motherfuckers. Overnight it was turned from a decent hometown business to that soulsucking shitstain atrocity. Not to rub it in, heh but Im sure you can attest to our allegations.
