I'm looking to get into reading new authors and I need some recommendations.

Right now I'm considering reading James Pattersons books but I'm open to more suggestions.

I really don't want to get into any Sci-Fi authors right now.

It's satirical comedy, not sci-fi...

The "Hitchhiker's" Books

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
    Life, the Universe, and Everything
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

The "Detective/Mystery" books

    Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Long, Dark Tea-Time of the Soul

Then why are his books always in the Sci-Fi area of book stores?

I think you would find the works of Theodore Geisel intriguing.

Why are comics in the children's section?

He sets his satire and comedy in the trappings of science fiction. But, it's absurd sci-fi. Simple, and, relatively ludicrous. For example, a ship that runs off "improbabilities". The odds of getting from one place to another, instantly, are a bazillion-to-one. So, the engines lower it to 1-to-1, thus, making it a certainty....and the universe is forced to obey. Or, they talk about a line of popular books where God disproves himself.

Listen, just go check out Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy at your local library. If you like it, you'll love the entire series...

Harlan Ellison - cuts across almost every fiction genre, great author, mostly short stories

Elmore Leonard - mystery/crime novels, great dialogue, fast reads

John D. MacDonald - his Travis McGee series is amazing, more great dialogue, more serious/grittier than Leonard

Andrew Vachss - more crime/thriller novels, grimm & gritty but great, Shella is a standalone novel that will give you a taste for his style

Terry Pratchett - hilarious fantasy, has the Discworld series and standalone novels, co-wrote Good Omens with Neil Gaiman (probably my favorite book), I highly recommend Reaper Man

Christopher Moore - this guy is absolutely hilarious, hasn't written a bad book; my favorites are A Dirty Job, Bloodsucking Fiends, and Practical Demonkeeping

Sounds like what I was looking for. I've never really read any crime or thriller novels, been wanting to start for a while now.

Stephen King - master of horror and goosebumps. I've been a fan since I was 10 years old. One of the few authors whose books I'll pick up just based on his name. He takes about 100 pages to set up his stories and then they take off from there. Totally worth it. It's very rare that he has an off book. Fav'rites: The Stand; It; Salem's Lot; Firestarter; The Shining; Pet Cemetary; Four Seasons; The Green Mile; Bag of Bones...ah, hell, they' re all good...

Carl Hiaasen - don't let the craptaculous movie Strip Tease throw you off - Hollywood always has a way of fucking up a good book. He writes mystery/suspense wrapped up in a healthy dose of comedy. Always funny and entertaining.

James Ellroy - best known for L.A. Confidential (a rare book Hollywood actually did a great job with) this guy is a master at the retro murder/mystery. The Black Dahlia is another excellent tale he did - a work of fiction based on the real life Black Dahlia murder where the grusomely tortured and dismembered body of Elizabeth Short -- http://www.bethshort.com/scene21.htm -- was discovered in 1947. A movie based on the book is coming out this fall. I'm hoping Hollywood does as good a job with Dahlia as they did with Confidential, but regardless Ellroy has a knack for capturing the dark and disturbing aspects of people and crime. My Dark Places, Suicide Hill and Because The Night are also recommended.

Dear, sweet Harley Kwink...I'm madly in love with you. Marry me! We can go to Canadia. Or Boston or something. It'll be grand...You know the cookies are a given. They are ALWAYS a given. You could dump me tomorrow and you'd still get the cookies. Boston..shit, wherever dyke weddings were legalized. And where better to rub their little piggie noses in how bad they suck than right on their doorstep? What are they gonna do? Be jealous of you? Stare furiously at your tah-tahs? Not willingly give you cookies, but instead begrudgingly give you their cookies? Woman, time to wake up to the powers you wield - Uschi

If you're going to read Patterson, then I suggest you only read the Alex Cross novels. The last few books Patterson has put out have been utter crap - its become clear that he is just riding on his former reputation and no longer puts any effort into his books. Its a shame, too, as he used to be a good writer.

I read a lot of his books in high school, most I didn't care for. I keep telling myself I need to re-read The Stand and Misery. I loved both of those.

I have a friend who works for the publishing company that handles Patterson's books. She says the general consensus is that he sucks. By the way, I agree with Harley: James Ellroy is great reading. Besides LA Confidential, check out Killer On The Road, Black Dahlia, and My Dark Places.

At the risk of sounding like Pariah, I recommend the works of Chuck Palahniuk. Fight Club, Choke, Haunted, and Diary being my particular favorites. Different narrative style, good pacing, and some really sick, twisted, funny stuff. If you like black comedy and satire, then he's one to check out.

Both good books, but if youpick up something of his to read, I highly recommend Bag of Bones. I've said it before, but that is prolly my favorite of his. It's not the scariest book he's written, but its more a sad love story with a fucked up horror twist. Absolutely loved it.

Looks interesting. I've been wanting to read some history books and didn't know where to start.

she's the best rex.....she will provide an insight no one else can. Most great history professors will recomend her and incorporate her insights into their teachings. The Proud Tower which takes place right before WWI shows you exactly how it happened plus just how rampant anarchasm socialism comunism and fascism were in the USA and why we were able to more or less go in a different direction than many other countries in Europe and the rest of the world.

That sounds really good. My library has two copies in, I'll pick it up tomorrow.

My favorite authors, in random order:

Neil Gaiman: You may not have liked American Gods, but even though I like its epic nature, I enjoyed his fantasy tales like Stardust and Neverwhere a bit more. Plus, like JM mentioned, Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett) was a darn good read! Also, his collection of short stories - Smoke and Mirrors - is a great, varied read.

Lewis Carroll: I bought his complete works in my early teens and I still enjoy them to this day. From Through the Looking-Glass to The Hunting of the Snark... and, heck, even Phantasmagoria, no one can craft good fiction mixed with the complete absurdity and nonsense that Carroll can.

C.S. Lewis: Not only do I like Lewis' fictional works, like 'The Chronicles of Narnia' and 'The Space Trilogy', but I love his religious works as well. These might not be your cup of tea, but I've always enjoyed Mere Christianity and The Problem of Pain.

Truman Capote: I read In Cold Blood not too terribly long ago and fell in love with the wordsmanship of Truman Capote. I have yet to read anyone who can paint so vivid a picture with his words as Capote. Be it In Cold Blood or Breakfast at Tiffany's, Capote delivers.
