Updated: 9:40 a.m. ET Aug 8, 2006 New York Jets running back Curtis Martin told the team to draft a running back in the first round in April because he was concerned he might not be able to play this season because of his injured right knee, the Newark Star-Ledger reported Monday.
"You know it has to be serious for Curtis to do something like that," said a Jets official, who requested anonymity. "That tells you a lot about Curtis. He's always concerned about the team."
The official said Martin's right knee is now "bone on bone" after having had surgery on his right knee the past two seasons.
Martin, 33, a future Hall of Famer who is fourth all-time in rushing yards with 14,101, had routine arthroscopic surgery in December to clean out the right knee, but the joint has not responded.
In the draft in April, the Jets picked Virginia left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson at No. 4 overall and Ohio State center Nick Mangold at 29th. They didn't draft a running back until the fourth round, Florida State's Leon Washington.
