Memento wasn't really backwards, though. It was just non-linear. Irreversible, Pinter's Betrayal, that episode of Seinfeld...those are backwards.
Memento was actually more critically well-received than the Prestige has been, so, while the films have differences, you may not enjoy it if you didn't care for Memento.
