An endorsement by astronomers meeting in Prague would require school and university textbooks to be rewritten.
The proposal recognises eight classical planets, three planets belonging to a new category called "plutons" and the largest asteroid Ceres.
Pluto remains a planet, but becomes the basis for the new pluton category.
The plan has been drawn up by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) with the aim of settling the question of what does and does not count as a planet.
Some 2,500 astronomers gathered at the IAU General Assembly in Prague will vote on the plan next Thursday.
This is bullshit and won't pan out into anything. One, they just aren't planets - even under the new name "plutons." Two, it's impractical for the public and worthless to the professionals.

I agree, this is bullshit! Plutons???? That sounds like something from a really BAD 50's sci - fi flick.
In my opinion, they ought to just let Pluto retain it's planet status, and not worry about redefining the term "Planet".

The problem is that "Planet" has never really been a scientific term, but now scientists want to take control of it. Mercury and Neptune have very little in common, but they are both called "Planets". It doesn't really make sense when you think about it, but it's the way things are. Now, some scientists have come up with a vague description that allows them to be called the same thing.

NERD FIGHT!!!Quote:
link Star-gazers puzzled by Pluto
August 18 2006 at 08:30PM Prague - Scientists who peer under rocks and gaze into space were clashing on Friday over the astronomical question of the year: Is Pluto really a planet?
The unusual dispute between geologists and astronomers has forced a scientific panel to consider scrapping its plan to call Pluto and similar bodies "plutons," said panel member and University of London astronomer Iwan Williams.
Earth-science experts emailed a mountain of objections after the pluton plan was released this week at a Prague conference of 2 500 space scientists with the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
Williams and other members of the IAU panel were scheduled to offer the plan, as part of a new definition of solar system bodies, for a membership vote next week.
New definition of planets The vote will determine the future status of Pluto, a distant world that's been called the ninth planet since its discovery in 1930.
Judging by the news clippings stacked at the conference's press office, the world is watching. And geologists are crying foul.
"The most vociferous reaction (to the proposal) has been against the word 'pluton,'" Williams told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. "Geologists say it's already used.
"In light of the comments received, we might or might not modify (the proposal) a little bit," Williams said. "We're going to try to call them (the proposed plutons) something else."
Among geologists a "pluton" is a traditional term for "any body of igneous rock that solidified below the Earth's surface," according to a University of California web dictionary.
But the IAU panel said this week that, after two years of study, it had coined the word "pluton" to describe a distinctive category of planets. These would include Pluto and at least two other heavenly bodies that orbit the sun beyond Neptune.
Pluto, its companion Charon and a body unofficially called Xena - but scientifically known as 2003 UB313 - would be called "planets" as well as "plutons" as the proposal currently stands. More "plutons" could be found in the future.
In addition, Pluto and Charon would be called a "double planet." No longer would Charon be called Pluto's "moon."
Only Earth and seven other bodies from Mercury to Neptune would qualify as "classical" planets.
"Plutons are distinguished from classical planets in that they reside in orbits around the sun that take longer than 200 years to complete" and have other characteristics that "suggest a different origin than classical planets," according to an IAU circular on the controversial plan.
The proposal would increase the number of all planets - bodies that Williams said have not so far been found outside our solar system - to 12 including the three plutons.
"It's important that our definition is something we can translate to different solar systems in due time" after future astronomical discoveries, Williams said.
He expects bodies orbiting other stars to be found "in the not-too-distant future." And each will have to be categorised.
Williams said a majority of IAU astronomers back the panel's new definition of planets while a minority think neither Pluto nor similar bodies deserve the title for "various reasons."
"Strong views" on the Pluto question have surfaced at least partly because "there is some sort of affection for Pluto," he explained.
But Williams thinks the panel's resolution will be approved after the plan is modified - perhaps in a way that satisfies geologists. IAU members are scheduled to debate the issue Tuesday.
When the dust settles, Williams predicts, Pluto will still be called a planet.
Who knew "pluton" was such a popular word?

Adding new planets just to have more planets is dumb.
If they DO add a bunch more, I would no more recognize them than I would start calling "Brontosaurus" by it's new name, " Apatosaurus."
Apatosaurus sounds.......gay.
Brontosaurus sounds important, immense..like the actual dinosaur.
Plutons sounds...gay.
Asteroid sounds descriptive and interesting.
Think about it...it's one to grow on.

Quite frankly, who really gives a shit other than nerds? What fucking difference does it make to our lives?
I was taught about the solar system at school, time I will never get back! What fucking use has that information ever been to most of us?
The only thing this will do is make governments spend even more of our money on space exploration, instead of spending it on hospitals & cancer research etc.
Fuck the solar system! Fuck planets! Fuck plutons! And fuck space!

We do have a clear definition of what a planet is and it does allow for Neptune, Uranus and Mercury to all fit within that classification. It doesn't, however, allow for these new rocks to fit. I agree with Beardguy, leave our planets alone, unless you find something else that fits the original definition. Sphearoid in shape, has an atmosphere. Of course if someone were to come along and show a cube shaped object with an atmosphere that might be worth considering.

Go fuck a horse!
I didnt say my education time was wasted, I said it was wasted on something that was of absolutely no use to something like 99% of the human population!
I'm sure there were much more useful things I could have been taught rather than what does & doesnt constitute a planet, and what fucking planets there are?. How does knowing any of this help you in your day to day life?
Maybe if they had taught you more about reading than teaching you about planets, then you would have understood my post!
As for youth.......fuck off you cunt, get to know fellow posters before you start weighing in with opinions that you know jack shit about!
I know life is a learning experience, but if you want to learn about pointless stuff like this, it should be your choice, not something forced upon you!

"Planet" is based on some Latin word that's real damn similar that means "wanderer." The planets were called such because they were points of light that wandered through the constillations over the days, months, and years. When ye olde astronomers discovered that this effect was due to their being in the same solar system as Earth, the term was designated to the large collections of matter that orbited the sun. When it was discovered that "planets" had moons the distinction was made more specific - thus leading to Pluto being identified as a "planet" while the nearly identical "Cheron" and "Titan" were labeled moons (orbiting the "planets" rather than the sun, directly). All "planets" to this point have an atmosphere and, with exception of Pluto, orbit the sun on a singular plane - the plane previously occupied by the rotating disc of rock, gas, and dust which collected by gravitational pull to form the sun and planets. A further reason that professionals have argued for Pluto being called a planet is how it regularly crosses its orbit with Neptune. These new "plutons" they're talking about are mere asteroids in the Kuiper Belt and do not pass into the commonly accepted region of the solar-system-proper (as the Kuiper Belt and the Whatchamacallit Cloud are so far out and so dark as to be a second half of the equation). It would almost make more sense for them to call Haley's Comet a planet than these remote rocks.

It is the Kuiper Belt, NotWedge..it is mentioned in the articles I posted in the " Galaxies, stars, planets and moons" thread I posted.

Yes, the Kuiper Belt, that was no argument. The Oort Cloud surrounds even that. There has been a miscommunication.

Uschi couldn't remember the name of the Oort cloud, I was just trying to help there.
And I was being a smartass about Pluto. Frankly, I don't think it should be called a planet. It probably wouldn't have been if not for publicity from the Lowell people. It was in the right place to prove one of Lowell's hack theories even though it didn't have nearly the mass needed to to anything to the orbits of Neptune or Uranus.

It WAS kinda neat that there really was something where he predicted though - regardless of how wrong his theories proved to be. It's like when you work a math problem completely wrong and still come out with the right answer just based on pure coincidence.

...and there is good evidence for running water having been on Mars at one point in time.....photos taken by Mars orbiters and by Spirit and Opportunity show proof of channels that could only be carved on the surface of Mars by running water.... but it's axis is tilted enough, and gravity is not strong enough, so the water eventually evaporated into space..Our moon helps keep the Earth from having a VERY wobbly tilt on it's axis, thus giving us stable seasons and relatively stable weather patterns, in general..... Mars did not have a moon to stabilize it's axis tilt, and thus, lost it's water and nearly ALL of it's atmosphere.... It only has 1 percent the atmospheric pressure that Earth has...

Uh, isn't the liquid at the polar caps? And just how does a planet lose it's atmosphere to space? The rotation certainly doesn't negate gravity.

Actually, that face looks a LOT like a Cyberman!
Yes the liquid is at the polar caps...frozen..and new evidence shows that there are eruptions in the polar caps!

Then what the hell was that nonsense of losing the atmosphere to space you posted?

but it's axis is tilted enough, and gravity is not strong enough, so the water eventually evaporated into space

I am referring to the FIRST face pic looking like a Cyberman, as you have posted ANOTHER pic BEFORE my mesage was posted.

Air Leaks from Mars via Planet's Tail By Robert Roy Britt Senior Science Writer posted: 27 September, 2004 7 a.m. ET
Like a comet, Mars has a tail, a stream of particles pushed away from the planet by the Sun's energy.
New measurements of the Martian tail reveal how much air the planet loses to space every day and allow scientists to estimate the tremendous loss that may have occurred billions of years ago, making the red planet the dry and cold world it is.
Theory holds that Mars once had a thick atmosphere, but today it is about 1 percent as dense as the air on Earth. Nobody is sure exactly where it all went, but a planetary tail, kicked up by a solar wind, is one likely culprit.
Naked to space
Unlike Earth, Mars is not protected by a strong magnetic field. So charged particles riding out on the solar wind -- a constant stream from the Sun -- are able to interact directly with Mars' atmosphere, energizing particles there until they reach the escape velocity of the planet.
"The atmosphere of an unmagnetized planet like the present Mars is effectively dehydrated by the solar wind," explained study leader Rickard Lundin of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics. "The solar wind carries energy and momentum directly into the ionosphere and upper atmosphere of Mars."
The escaping particles that were observed are called ions, Lundin explained. They are oxygen, hydrogen and molecules such as carbon dioxide that have lost an electron and become positively charged.
About 1 kilogram of mass is lost to space every second, Lundin told SPACE.com. That would be equal to 2.2 pounds of material if weighed on Earth.
Like a comet
Though the tail of Mars is not visible to the eye, the process is much like what the Sun does to volatile substances on the surface of a comet. "The tail of a comet illustrates this very well," Lundin said.
How all this affected ancient Mars is what scientists would really like to know.
Mars probably had a magnetic field 3.5 billion years ago, Lundin said, but it didn't stick. Thereafter, while the atmosphere was still presumably dense -- perhaps 10 times thicker than today -- the loss rate for water and other substances would have been perhaps 100 times higher than it is now, Lundin said.
The measurements were made by the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter. The results are detailed in the Sept. 24 issue of the journal Science.

Didja see the real face on Mars? The impact crater that looks like a smiley face, I mean.
So now Mars is the official " Have a Nice Day" planet?

Fuck a horse? Yeah, your educational time isn't being wasted at all. <lol>. Dude, if you don't think a discussion about the planets is important and you think learning about them in school was a waste of time, here's a subtle hint for you, GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE THREADS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THAT SUBJECT! Otherwise you're being a fucking worthless troll. I've been warned that you're one of the "popular kids" in this playground... Duely noted, now ask me if I give a flying fuck? You're a child, I'm an adult, as if I care about the opinions of some snot nosed brat. Now move along and go discuss important things that actually interest you like Pokemon or whatever, this thread is about a subject you claim to not care about, so why come in here and troll? Just leave. Quote:

Heh, Mars, Bring of War & Smily Faces. So do you think that there's anything to the idea that life might have at one time existed on Mars? I don't necessarally mean intelligent life, just some kind of life period. Frankly I have my doubts about the existance of intelligent life anywhere in this solar system at all.

I think it's a possibility there was once microbes or lichens or something. Back when it was still geologically active.
