So, that show from the 60's called " My Favorite Martian "
ought to have been called " My Favorite Microbe " ?

Heh, Mars, Bring of War & Smily Faces.

So do you think that there's anything to the idea that life might have at one time existed on Mars? I don't necessarally mean intelligent life, just some kind of life period. Frankly I have my doubts about the existance of intelligent life anywhere in this solar system at all.

I think there may have been microbes on Mars at one point.

But that may have been it....

Though if we EVER send men to Mars, part of me hopes that they dig and find ruins of lost cities.....

Sorry..can't let go of that one...LoL!

Heh. Man, first of all...welcome. Second, you have a lot to learn about these boards, if you think the normal laws of logic and rationality apply to posting in threads around here. i.e., the term "troll" is usually only reserved for those that actually post only about the subject matter at hand, instead of going off on a tangent, or ranting their personal opinion.

Besides...you know...opinions from both sides are allowed. You probably shouldn't spontaneously throw stones at Cunty McWelsh there until (A) you actually get to know him better (Hint: he's not a "kid"), and, (B) realize that levels of conversational and subjective intelligence generally aren't a relative requirement to voice an opinion around here...

I don't mind tangents, or elipses either, but bragging about being ignorant bugs the heck out of me. I've been on more than a few forums where going off on a tangent is the norm, hell, my sites are like that. But we don't normally parade our stupidity as if it's a badge of honor. Sorry Nowhereman, it's a pet peeve, stupid people bug the hell out of me. If you're not stupid then I apologize, but if you are, you won't know the difference anyway.

So basically, get off topic and stay off it, gotcha. Not a problem.

Hmmm.. But the topic was interesting damnit! Oh well. Okay, Beardguy, I've got an author you need to check out, his name is Jack McDevitt. You'd love this guy's stuff. It covers a lot of the things you find fascinating. Lots of alien archeological stuff. Lost civilizations on distant worlds and what-not. I've read two series by the guy, one starts with a book called "The Engines of God", it's 4 novels long. The other I've only read the 2nd and 3rd book of, Polaris & Seeker, there are 3 books, I just ordered the first one from ebay, didn't even know it existed, so you could read them out of order.

The second one seemes more my cup of tea but the other one is something you might like more though, both are good stuff.

Reading..that is a habit I need to get back into.... in the past 8.5 years I have read :

Have Spacesuit, Will Travel, by Robert Heinlein

Runaway Robot, by Lester Del Rey

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix

Harry Potter and The Halfblood Prince By JK Rowling

That is all, unless science textbooks count.

Mostly, I read articles about space online, and online comics..My reading habits kinda crashed n burned after I got cable tv in 1989....and a computer in 1999....

Regardless, it is not the lower gravity that made Mars lose its atmosphere. Diminished magnetic field or simply the bombardment of solar wind, as the article suggests, makes more sense.

And Pluto, being much smaller than even Mars, has very weak gravity and still retains it's atmosphere.

Venus is just a few hundred miles smaller than Earth.. and it has a crushing, deadly, noxious atmosphere which is 100 times as dense as Earth's!! Venyera probes sent there by Russia decades ago were both crushed by the atmospheric pressure and corroded by the caustic nature of that atmosphere..but not before they were able to send some fascinating pics back to Earth!

New Horizons Probe to Pluto was launched to be the first probe sent to visit the tiny double planet of Pluto and Charon on January 19, 2006..and won't arrive there till July, 2015! I will be waiting for pics of this, the only planet in our solar system NOT to have had a probe, lander or orbiter sent to it.

Mercury has been found to have a tenuous atmosphere comprised of stuff blown off the sun.

I cut out and painted a set of planets that are over my bedroom closet. They range in size from Pluto being the size of a lima bean, to Jupiter, which is two thirds the size of a basketball...( They are not quite to scale, but Jupiter is the largest, with Saturn, then Uranus and Neptune being the 4 largest, and the other planets being significantly smaller than the gas giants. ) and no, I won't be adding extra planets to it if it is decided our solar system has more planets than the nine known to us today.

Why should they add more? It'll just be confusing!

But they could add a tenth planet someday...just hope there are NO Cybermen living on it!!

Fuck a horse? Yeah, your educational time isn't being wasted at all. <lol>. Dude, if you don't think a discussion about the planets is important and you think learning about them in school was a waste of time, here's a subtle hint for you, GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE THREADS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THAT SUBJECT! Otherwise you're being a fucking worthless troll. I've been warned that you're one of the "popular kids" in this playground... Duely noted, now ask me if I give a flying fuck? You're a child, I'm an adult, as if I care about the opinions of some snot nosed brat. Now move along and go discuss important things that actually interest you like Pokemon or whatever, this thread is about a subject you claim to not care about, so why come in here and troll? Just leave.

I didnt say my education time was wasted, I said it was wasted on something that was of absolutely no use to something like 99% of the human population!

I'm sure there were much more useful things I could have been taught rather than what does & doesnt constitute a planet, and what fucking planets there are?.
How does knowing any of this help you in your day to day life?

Maybe if they had taught you more about reading than teaching you about planets, then you would have understood my post!

As for youth.......fuck off you cunt, get to know fellow posters before you start weighing in with opinions that you know jack shit about!

I know life is a learning experience, but if you want to learn about pointless stuff like this, it should be your choice, not something forced upon you!

Negative opinions are acceptable if they're presented from a logical, educated point of view. Statements about how you believe learning something is a waste of time and then dismissing the subject out of hand simply show that you should either not comment on the subject because you are completely ignorant of it or that if you do, you should accept the consequences of your actions, in this case it's simple, you've made a fool out of yourself, admitedly, without qualification. And exactly what kind of research do I need to do? You've said yourself that you considered any education on this subject to be a waste of time, therefor there is no reason to do any research. Only a child and a brat would come into a discussion and disrupt it with comments about how it's a waste of time. Are there not thousands of other threads on this forum for you to go to and discuss things in? An adult would realize this and participate where he feels he has something to contribute. You don't see me going into one of the threads about how hot some supermodel is and saying shit like "I'm gay so I think sexy women are a waste of time, blah blah blah". What would happen if I did that? I think we both know damned right well what would happen. So don't get all defensive when you all but say "I'm an idiot" and then somebody agrees with you.

You think the topic is pointless and a waste of time, so why the FUCK are you wasting your time with it? Do you fail to see the stupidity of your own arguement here? Follow the logic here, I'll break it down for you.

1. You think the subject is pointless and a waste of time.
2. You are wasting your time reading and posting in a thread about it.
3. You are pointless and a waste of time.

Get it?

No?

That's because you are the very living definition of a forum troll (regardless of what this specific forum defines that word as, it has a pre-existing definition and that's the one I'm using here).

Troll (Trolling): In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who posts inflammatory messages on the Internet, such as on online discussion forums, to disrupt discussion or to upset its participants. "Troll" can also mean the inflammatory message itself posted by a troll or be a verb meaning to post such messages. "Trolling" (the gerund) is also commonly used to describe the activity.

Christ, this idiot wants everything his own way.

My opinion was not trolling, unlike his ascertion that I am an idiot for stating an opinion!

I take it Mr.Old-Man-Modfather, that you do not believe in freedom or speech that you Americans shout about so often.
I was under the impression that freedom of speech allowed someone like myself to voice my opinions on any subject I feel the need to!

My opinions were that learning about space was not something people should have been forced to do at school, it should have been a choice.
The fact that you condemn me for voicing this opinion, and the opinion that learning about space is pointless, just proves that you, by your definition, are the child & the brat!

If I had come in and said "Space sucks & anyone who likes it is gay", then I would be trolling!

I have posted in many threads about religion, another thing I find a waste of time, and had "conversations" with people who put forward their side of the argument rather than say, if you dont like it dont post!

At no point have you actually justified the fact why this subject should be forced on people at school, or mentioned what actual benefit this learning experience has had on your life.

As I have said several times, and you choose to ignore.
Eductation is great, necessary & not pointless, but what schools choose to educate you in is where the problem lays!

Schools made things like this compulsary, but stuff like foreign languages a choice. Maybe if they got their priorities right, I would have had no reason to post in this thread!

If you dont like opinions that go against yours, feel free not to post here, but if you continue to do so, stop whining like a little brat/child!

Hubble Uncovers Most Distant Galaxy
HUBBLE ASTRONOMERS USE LENS IN NATURE TO UNCOVER MOST DISTANT GALAXY IN THE UNIVERSE

A NASA Hubble Space Telescope image of the galaxy cluster CL1358+62 has uncovered a gravitationally-lensed image of a more distant galaxy located far beyond the cluster. The gravitationally-lensed image appears as a red crescent to the lower right of center. The galaxy's image is brightened, magnified, and smeared into an arc-shape by the gravitational influence of the intervening galaxy cluster, which acts like a gigantic lens.

Exact measurement of the distance from spectroscopic observations with the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii show the lensed galaxy is the farthest ever seen. Its light is only reaching us now from a time when the universe was but 7% its current age of approximately 14 billion years. This places the young galaxy as far as 13 billion light-years away. The lensing foreground cluster is 5 billion light-years from us.

You're a fucking idiot. Just because he is of the opinion that funding space programs is a waste of money does not make him wrong. It's just a different opinion than yours. Even if he was a child which he is not, he is acting alot more adult than you are. Pokemon gotta catch them all!

I like it here a lot! I have been here for over 3 years now.

It took me a while to find my place in here. I had to learn, just like Commander Data, how to interact with humans and to be able to comprehend their nuances.

I even have a few friends in these boards.

They like my stories and, for some obtuse reason, my offbeat sense of humor!

It's a pretty cool place!

These people are basically a good bunch! You seem to want them NOT to like you. I am the first to agree that you are very intelligent, and very big, but you also need to be tolerant of the opinions of others.

Yeah, I didn't like it when No Where Man said space sucks, but he is entitled to his opinion! He never signed a contract to like everything that everybody else likes. Niether did you. I respect him for expressing himself as he does.

Space is one of my major passions, but it is not a passion that everyone shares.

I learned YEARS ago to respect the opinions of others online. They are not simply just clever forms of AI, they are people with their own lives, likes, dislikes, thoughts, feelings, and their own destinies.

End of line.
