No offense, sir, but....being that you are pretty new around here, and haven't actually taken the time to get to know anyone, how can you make any reasonable or intelligent determination concerning what this board is, and is not, like? I find it curious that, while you flaunt your obvious intelligence as a sign of some form of superiority, you are incapable of the slightest bit of tolerance towards others opinions. When anyone (including you) express their thoughts and ideas on a subject, they are not inferring that it is right....yet, it is simply right for them.
Modfather, generally everyone believes you are welcome to post in any of the forums here. However, if you truly are interested in hanging out on these boards, take a step back for a moment. Stop taking yourself, and your opinions, so seriously. In case you haven't noticed, no one here takes themselves at all seriously. That's what makes this place great. What makes it fun. Come on over to the Random Chat forum and have a humorous sparring match with Nowhereman, or PJP, or the others. No matter what is said, it's all in getting to know you. And likewise you, us.
Either way, no matter what you decide, take into consideration that expousing your opinion, and then simply denying others their own...as well as immediately labeling them as "trolls" (a term, I remind you, which has no meaning here)...does not go very far in expressing your obvious intelligence. It, in fact, presents you in a very limited, intolerant light. And that, my friend, is not sign of true intelligence....but rather, a bitter, knee-jerk agenda of arrogance. I would like to believe that is incorrect.
So, come on...join in...have fun...and lighten up...

Astronomers Say Pluto Is Not a Planet By WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer 3 hours ago
These images, released by NASA Thursday, March 6, 1996, ... PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.
After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is _ and isn't _ a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.
Although astronomers applauded after the vote, Jocelyn Bell Burnell _ a specialist in neutron stars from Northern Ireland who oversaw the proceedings _ urged those who might be "quite disappointed" to look on the bright side.
"It could be argued that we are creating an umbrella called 'planet' under which the dwarf planets exist," she said, drawing laughter by waving a stuffed Pluto of Walt Disney fame beneath a real umbrella.
"Many more Plutos wait to be discovered," added Richard Binzel, a professor of planetary science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The decision by the prestigious international group spells out the basic tests that celestial objects will have to meet before they can be considered for admission to the elite cosmic club.
For now, membership will be restricted to the eight "classical" planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Much-maligned Pluto doesn't make the grade under the new rules for a planet: "a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."
Pluto is automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's.
Instead, it will be reclassified in a new category of "dwarf planets," similar to what long have been termed "minor planets." The definition also lays out a third class of lesser objects that orbit the sun _ "small solar system bodies," a term that will apply to numerous asteroids, comets and other natural satellites.
Experts said there could be dozens of dwarf planets catalogued across the solar system in the next few years.
NASA said Thursday that Pluto's demotion would not affect its US$700 million New Horizons spacecraft mission, which earlier this year began a 9 1/2-year journey to the oddball object to unearth more of its secrets.
"We will continue pursuing exploration of the most scientifically interesting objects in the solar system, regardless of how they are categorized," Paul Hertz, chief scientist for the science mission directorate, said in a statement.
The decision on Pluto at a conference of 2,500 astronomers from 75 countries was a dramatic shift from just a week ago, when the group's leaders floated a proposal that would have reaffirmed Pluto's planetary status and made planets of its largest moon and two other objects.
That plan proved highly unpopular, splitting astronomers into factions and triggering days of sometimes combative debate that led to Pluto's undoing. In the end, only about 300 astronomers cast ballots.
Now, two of the objects that at one point were cruising toward possible full-fledged planethood will join Pluto as dwarfs: the asteroid Ceres, which was a planet in the 1800s before it got demoted, and 2003 UB313, an icy object slightly larger than Pluto whose discoverer, Michael Brown of the California Institute of Technology, has nicknamed Xena.
Charon, the largest of Pluto's three moons, is no longer under consideration for any special designation.
Brown, who watched the proceedings from Cal Tech, took Thursday's vote in stride _ even though his discovery won't be christened a planet.
"UB313 is the largest dwarf planet. That's kind of cool," he said.

This is BULLSHIT!
Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto using a blink comparator machine in 1930 is probably PISSED about this in the afterlife!

I like to debate, no doubt about it. So this is my way, I'm gonna argue with nowhereman, he can either step up or step off. Feel free to take it as seriously or non-seriously as you want.
I never once said that having an opinion is a bad thing or that the dude isn't entitled to his opinion, what I'm saying is that coming into a topic that's about astronomy and saying it's all a waste of time is a bit like walking into an art museum and saying "art is crap" to everyone in the place. I simply do not understand why someone who has absolutly no interest in a subject would interject themselves into it simply to say it's pointless. So you feel it's pointless, fine, there are other places aren't there? I mean, do you sit around your living room watching all the TV shows you dislike just so you can yell at the television about how pointless the shows are? There's no logic or intelligence at work here.
Yeah, so I'm new to this forum, so what? Why is it that some people believe that just because you're new to a specific website or discussion forum that you're like a newborn baby that just popped out? You're people, I've been dealing with people for 41 years, this is a website, I've been using and designing websites since the early 90's, it's on a computer, been using computers since the 70's. The only thing that's different here is the colors and pictures and the way in which certain words are put together by certain people. Which is to say, there's not much new here, I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt, etc etc.
Yeah, I don't know the players in this particular game personally, that's true. That doesn't mean that I'm going to change who I am until I get to know them. I'm gonna be me no matter who you are. That means if someone does or says something amazingly dumb it's going to bug me a little bit. (Trust me, I'm not even bugged a little bit yet here). What I am is confused about the mindset of a person who'd come into a thread on a topic they have no interest in and espouse on how pointless that subject is when they can easily go to any one of a number of other threads where there are subjects they DO enjoy to discuss. Nobody has yet explained this to me.
Believe it or not, I'm not a total asshole, I'm only part asshole. You just haven't had a chance to see the side of me that doesn't smell like shit yet. It isn't all up to me to blow sunshine up everyone's asses here to be able to fit in. Since I joined I've stuck pretty much to the topics that are on a specific subject and contained posts by someone I know personally, as a means to find more out about this site. Within 48 hours someone posted something inane, that's not exactly giving me a great first impression of the place. No, I don't mean to judge everyone based on that impression but you know what they say about first impressions. <Shrug>
After looking through some of the other forums here, what I see is basically EBaum's World Forums Lite. Neither a good nor a bad thing, just, I've seen it before is all. If I find a niche here that appeals to me, that's great, talking astronomy was one area I was interested in but, if it's got to be like this then it seems rather pointless to try to have that kind of discussion. So you take nothing seriously, that's cool, I can understand that. Thing is, I'm on several other forums like that and I thought maybe this was different. I was wrong.
There are other things that are confusing me and bugging me a bit. Having read some of the threads I can see it's obvious that you know Jerry better than I thought you did, so I guess I have to be more open about what's confusing me. There seems to be no small amount of gay bashing here. I honestly don't understand it. I figured, if Jerry's saying the site is cool then the people there must be pretty open minded but I'm not seeing evidence of this. Hell, Jer, I even saw you use the word gay in the negative way in one post. HUH???
Oh well, this will just be fodder for certain individuals to use as grist for their ridicule mill, so be it.

You cannot understand why someone would post in a thread about something they find pointless?
Omce again you have still not read a single word I have posted.
The point my dear "old man who loves blowing his own trumpet" is that people are allowed to voice opinions. Some people are not gonna like those opinions, and some people, like you, are gonna whine like little bitches that their feelings have been hurt because someone said something negative about something they like!
This is how the world works, it isnt all sweetness & light, but you only seem to want it to work how you want it to work!
I voiced my opinion in this thread because I think the education system is wrong for forcing this on people! The eductation system is something I have had experience with, so why is it wrong that I voice an opinion on it?
Funny thing is, although I have stated my case time & time again, everytime you reply to justify your idiocy, you skirt around the issues I put forward, not once justifying why it should be on the eductation time table, and what benefit most kids have got from being forced to learn about it!
Lets also go back to the topic of this thread & tell me how this reclassification of planets has effected your life!

I don't believe anyone, including myself, was implying that you're just learning how to spell the word "internet". The confusion on my part was in assuming that you were interested in having some form of amicable relationship with people here. Generally, when people go to an internet message board, they are intending to interact on at least a basic social level. If your intention is otherwise, that's fine. I don't understand it. However, it is your right.
And, speaking simply from a personal note, your history and experience with the internet, computers, and whatnot is pretty irrelevant to your ability to intermingle or co-exist with others here. At no point was your personal history with the information superhighway in any question, or, seemingly relevant to any point brought up. In fact, it's more that you wished it to be known, so you interjected it for no real reason. So, really, unless you're looking for someone to be impressed for some reason, I would suggest toning down your continuing unfounded arrogance. By constantly insisting on emphasizing what you believe makes you the superior opinion or intellect, you are in effect degrading that very opinion/belief by those of us who do have rational common sense, and are not swayed or dazzled by large words. So, you know, take a breath...and tone it down.

I don't believe anyone was asking you to do so. In fact, I'm uncertain as to how you came to that point, other than you wished to express it to everyone. I believe the point made was, in fact, that to make a snap judgement on something or someone before any real facts or proof are provided to support such an assertion, is simply an assumption based on emotional opinion. It lacks any merit as far as factual logic, and therefore, can be easily dismissed as irrelevant. Much like the person who made it.

Define "dumb". In what way do you apply that to a person, or their beliefs? What's the comparitive baseline for what you consider a worthy opinion?

The explanation is exactly what has been offered. This is the RKMBs. There are no rules. It's not something that is flaunted, enjoyed, disliked, approved, or disproved. It simply is. Thus, the reasoning why I was trying to stress for you to take into consideration that, while you may believe you've "gotten the t-shirt"...and perhaps you have....not every message board is the same. I'm certain there's nothing here that would be any more or less surprising than any other place. However, all boards cannot be measured with the same criteria. To lump anything in a general catagory of judgement or opinion, without taking the time to examine the details, could be considered 'stereotyping'.
You may not enjoy that Cunty said something that pricked your nerve. However, instead of simply degrading his intelligence with all-capped-barbs, it might be more fullfilling for both parties if you were to debate each side with a modicum of facts and emotion. In the end, since it is both just your opinions, and cannot be factually proven one way or the other, both sides would have to agree to either consider the other's viewpoint....or, agree to disagree. But, if your intention is to debate, and prove your point, starting out by making fun of the other person's intelligence is not the wisest course of action.

Ah yes. From the outsider point of view, it probably does appear like gay bashing. And, it's not without some agreement that it can go too far at times. However, just as Jerry, Jim Jackson, Klinton, MEM, and others of the homosexual inclination have discovered, it's not that there is any agenda for or against homosexuality here. It's that there is absolutely nothing sacred. Period.
From hairlines, to weight, to nationality, to race, to sexual preference, to religious beliefs....you name it, and we rag each other about it. Why? I don't know, really. I think it's mainly because it's irrelevant in the grander scheme of things. Is Jerry gay? Is he straight? Is he black, white? Catholic? Muslim? Does it matter? Jerry is simply the person he presents here to us. With his words, and his eternal kindness, his purity of humor, and warmest of hearts. That's who Jerry is to us. That's who anyone is, here. Who and whatever they present themselves as.
The RKMBS is not for the overly-sensitive crowd that takes themselves seriously. It's not for those with chips on their shoulders, agendas to burn, and axes to grind. It's just for social interaction, and fun.....all layed out on the most even of playing fields: the faceless, sexless, voiceless, neutralizing force of the internet message board.
So, with that said, if you take being gay too seriously...or believe that it defines you so completely, as to simply be your identity...then, no, I don't think you would enjoy being here.
But, if you are open to just being an asshole fairly, debating equally, and knowing that it's all shits-and-giggles, then, I think you'd have a great time here...

Pro, I am impressed with both your eloquence with words, and with what you say and the way you emote.
What you said sums up the RKMBS as though you had just written the instruction manual for this place.
Modfather, you know I wish you the best that life can offer.
I've known you through some good times and some horrible times.
These people of the RKMBS are basically good, for the most part. They make fun of themselves, each other, and life as we know it.
It took a while, but I myself learned to actually have a good laugh here! And you know better than anyone here that I have been unhappy for over 8 years years now...
You can see another side of me, yes, Modfather..the part of me that has humor..is outgoing here..I am working to integrate that online persona into my real time self...with some success....
I write and post my stories here in writer's block. " My Stories" seems to have generated some interest.
I have just over 6000 posts here, a feat which took over three years....
I learned to NOT take myself so seriously online and a bit in real time, as well.....
This place has been good for and good to me... many here feel that way, as well....
Life is a game....and it really is important to remember that there are times when ya just gotta say WTF and have fun!
And this is the BEST place that I know of online for fun!

Ah, but nobody is catching on here, I know all this stuff, well, that is to say that I'm aware of many of the implications and so forth. But re-read the first line of my previous post, I'm engaging in this arguement because I want to. If I were actually upset about it I wouldn't post another word on the subject, I'd just go elsewhere. Which is what I suggested nowhereman do if he didn't like the topic, but see, he didn't go away and neither did I, so maybe both of us enjoy the hell out of a good flame now and then. If I don't liberally spice my messages with a ton of smiley faces take for granted the fact that if I seriously had a problem I'd just not post anything at all. I don't define myself as gay at all, not even slightly, in fact that'd probably come last in a long list of terms and concepts I'd use to define myself, so no, that's not it. I just see an awful lot of the use of the word "gay" here (and plenty of other places these days) to mean something negative, this or that is "gay" now means it sucks. I propose we stop this and from now on say that something is nowhereman, so if you're playing a game online and something about it sucks, from now on, say it's nowhereman. It is true that I don't fully grasp the idea that a person would come into a thread about astronomy for no other reason than to say it's pointless. I'm not seeing that as posing an opinion or an alternate point of view so much as trolling. If he'd come in and said "I just don't understand the fascination with this subject, could somebody please explain why it's important?" then that might make more sense. But that's not even close to what he said is it? What he initially posted was inflamatory and insulting to anyone who'd expressed an interest in the subject matter. What he said was that what we find interesting is pointless and any time we've spent learning about it was "wasted". What about that statement is there NOT to take offense to? In all truth, I don't care what he thinks and his "opinions" are truely what's worthless here. If the subject had no merit then it would not be a subject studied by the most intelligent human beings the world has ever known. Which is how I get to the point where I define him as being dumb. Simply look at the people who would stand in stark contrast to what he has said. Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, et al, some of the most intelligent human beings that have ever lived would disagree with Nowhereman. Yet he not only makes this statement he makes it boldly and with some pride in the stance he's taken. This is how I'm defining him as being dumb. I don't need to defend the subject here or explain to anyone how it has benefitted anyone, myself included, that would be rather silly. He needs to justify his rediculious statements if anything needs to be justified at all. He asks me what the reclassification of Pluto means to me in my life, as if this question somehow holds all the weight of "why is astronomy and astrophysics relevant". The reclassification of Pluto is just a small small statement in the much larger picture. What it means to me right now, today, is nothing at all. What it means in the grander scheme however could be quite a lot. To me it's a statement about the intelligence of the general population from the most learned down to the most ignorant. What is the jusitifaction for the reclassification of Pluto and does it make any sense? To my thinking it doesn't make any sense and it shows a lack of thought on the part of those who have made this decision. On the whole it shows that we as a race are dumbing down a bit here. "All in all it's just another brick in the wall". It's just one more example of stupidity winning out over intelligent thought. It in fact goes in line with Nowhereman's entire point, that the subject is valueless. He'd probably get along well with those who'd agree that it's appropriate to reclassify Pluto, think as little as possible, do as little work as possible and turn your back on the things you either do not understand or are not very interested in. But this whole line of thinking will bore poor Nowhereman, because it's about astronomy and that's pointless. He should never have been forced to learn anything at all about it. But he wants to know exactly what relevance it has to him or anyone at all for that matter. Hmm, okay lets try this. A few hundred years ago there were people like him, they thought that the very idea that we should consider that the world was not flat and that we were not at the center of the universe was pointless, a waste of time, etc. Thankfully those people were proven to be idiots. But where would we be right now if the world listened to them instead of people taking the risks to find out the truth? Our future does not exist on this planet alone. If we intend to survive as a species we MUST venture beyond the boundaries of our own world. We have all but exhausted our natural resources, destroyed our ecology and we show every sign of devolving into a new dark age. People are not getting smarter, if anything, on the large scale people are becoming more and more stupid every year. You only need to pick up a newspaper, turn on the television or hit a few websites to see that this is the case. Yes, we have technological advances happening all the time, but it's the very small minority that are involved in those things while the vast majority are uneducated, ignorant individuals who think nothing of engaging in some of the most pathetic acts I have ever seen. In my life I've seen this devolution happen very clearly. Just as one example I can use the simple act of going to the store. When I was younger, you could go to a store and be treated properly by individuals who knew their job. If you needed assistance there'd be someone who knew what to tell you. Now a days you can't even get the average worker to figure out "NO ONIONS ON THAT BURGER", they're just too stupid to handle that task. And this is just one example out of thousands I could present. Thankfully I believe that natural selection will eventually weed out these lesser humanoids by having them walk in front of a truck or perhaps their brain stems will fly out their mouths and strangle them. Already many of them are doing us the favor of killing themselves off in drive-bys and gang wars. It's unfortunate that some innocent people do get caught in the crossfire there but in time hopefully they will wipe themselves out and we can be safe again and our species can once more evolve foreward. For now however, we have to deal with the ignorant types and those of us who recognize them for what they are need to realize that it's not safe to be around them because eventually they're going to self destruct. So what I'm saying is, when nowhereman implodes, please can he do it in a thread full of bimbos in wet t-shirts and not in an astronomy thread? Hmm? Please?

That's a long fucking post. You need to put quotes between the paragraphs to let the text breathe.

Beardguy has it right. The naner-word ratio cannot sink below 5:1.

Your ballroom days are overrrrr baby Night is drawing near
I know it's out of order.....just wanted to know if anyone knew the story behind Five to One......Morrison wrote the song as an anthem for his generation......people under the age of 30 outnumbered people over 30 five to one...hence the lyrics "they've got the guns but we've got the numbers" (this could be one of the greatest Doors songs ever) one of my favorites.

I have liked the Doors forever..Morrison was a fantastic poet..if he had lived, I feel he could have eventually stopped recording music if he'd wanted to, and just written poetry..which, based on the strength of his album sales, would have sold well..

You have yet to justify why billions of dollars are wasted on pointless research on what defines a planet, or is there life on Mars, when this money could be better spent on health care and education (something you harp on about, yet seem to have not learned how to spell and use punctuation).
You try taking the intelectual high ground, and berate those you feel educationally subnormal, yet you show yourself to be nowhere near as well educated as you think you are.

Look, Modfather, in all seriousness, I think this is a godawful small affair to the girl with the mousey hair, and her mommy is yelling no, and her daddy has told her to go. But her friend is nowhere to be seen, now she walks through her sunken dream to the seats with the clearest view, and she's hooked to the silver screen... But the film is saddening bore, for she's lived it ten times or more. She could spit in the eyes of fools as they ask her to focus on... sailors! Fighting in the dance hall. Oh, man! Look at those cavemen go. It's the freakiest
show. Take a look at the lawman beating up the wrong guy. Oh man Wonder if he'll ever know he's in the best selling show? Is there life on Mars?
It's on America's tortured brow that Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow. Now the workers have struck for fame, 'cause Lennon's on sale again. See the mice in their million hordes, from Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads. Rule Britannia is out of bounds, to my mother, my dog, and clowns. But the film is a saddening bore, 'cause I wrote it ten times or more. It's about to be writ again as I ask you to focus on... Sailors! Fighting in the dance hall. Oh, man! Look at those cavemen go. It's the freakiest show. Take a look at the lawman, beating up the wrong guy. Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know he's in the best selling show? Is there life on Mars?
