First I can recall is " The Amazing Colossal Man".

This guy gets caught in an atomic bomb blast and starts to grow..and grow..and grow! He doesn't stop until he's like 500 feet tall or something. Unlike Hank Pym, he cannot shrink down to normal size. His brain does not grow in proportion to his body, and he gets all pissy and mean, and finally runs around, smashing shit up.

" The Fly"... the original one, with Vincent Price.

" Help me! Help Me!" Ick.

" Jason and The Argonauts". This one had a giant pissed off statue in it. It stepped on people and squished them. There were skeleton warriors in it, too. This was a LONG time before CGI...they had Ray Harryhausen with his " Stop action" special effects using clay models. Well, it scared me when I was 7!

There was another one I can't recall the name of, but it had a ginormous talking one eyed monster in it and a space ship and the monster was making the guys in it all mental with it's mind powers..I forget what it did exactly, maybe it made them watch really bad reruns like in "Mystery Science Theater 3000 " or something like that....

My Mom made me go see that when I was a kid. Ugh!! I never cared for musicals before or after I saw it. Especially AFTER I saw it.

And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

Jacobs Ladder, with Tim Robbins. Freaked. My. Shit.

Of course, I had taken some acid at the time, so, that might have been a factor.

Pro : Everything counts.

I saw Alien at age 21 when it opened Memorial Day weekend, 1979..... I went with 8 or 9 other guys..Alien scared the SHIT outta me!

What was worse was after I got home to my apartment. I had forgotten to leave a light on, and the place was pitch black.. one of the damn shades on the windows rolled itself up quite loudly, and it startled me!

I got in bed and turned out the lights..and then, CRASH!!!
I took a flashlight to investigate, thinking it was a burglar..
and instead found that a bunch of pots and pans had fallen over in the pantry!

Scared the shit out of me.

I got into bed and pulled a pillow over my head.

Since then, no other movie has scared me that way again....

The first movie to scare the shit out of me was "The Name of the Rose" with Sean Connery and Christian Slater.

After than it's been pretty much downhill with scary movies.

That was particularly creepy.
At least for a kid like me, seeing it in the early 70's for the first time. The make-up on the fly's human head, the music, and the spider coming to eat his head. Creepy !

I loved that movie ! Great special effects. To me, it was just cool, it didn't scare me.

Some others that really scared me:

The Thing That Wouldn't Die (1958). About people digging a water pump, who unearth a head buried in a casket, and it turns out it was a warlock who was executed by pilgrims centuries ago, burying his head and body separately. But he comes back to life and controls people. Really creepy. That face !
I couldn't sleep after that one.

Halloween (the first one, 1978). I was about 14 when I saw it, and it still made sleep difficult the night I saw it.

It's Alive. (1977 or 1978, same deal) About a mutated baby that is like a wild predatory animal from the moment of birth when it leaves the womb, slaughtering everyone in sight. I especially remember the opening scene, where people in the hospital maternity waiting room hear screams, and come running into the delivery room, and all the doctors and nurses are dead, with blood splashed all over the walls. And another scene where it kills a guy delivering milk, in his truck.

Rosemary's Baby

The Omen

Some early 60's movie, I think called "Zontar, The Thing From Venus" or something like that, about an alien monster that stings people on the back of the neck, and takes over their minds.

And some early-60's movie about 7 survivors after a nuclear war.

and The Thing That Wouldn't Die..I saw that when I was about 7 years old on tv and it scared the crap outta me then!

I saw a movie on Tv in early 1978 about a woman who could turn into a GIANT black widow spider..it was pretty cool! And scarey! Anyone here ever seen it?

The last one sounds familiar, Beardguy.

I remember even some of the TV movies in the 70's were really scary. The first Kolchak movie, The Night Stalker(1971), where he chases a vampire, and when Kolchak's wandering around the vampire's boarded-up house with a flashlight, he opens the refrigerator to find the vampire keeps blood plasm from a blood bank he burglarized in the refrigerator.
And equally scary if not more so The Night Strangler(1972), about a strangler who kills six women every 21 years for a century and a half.

The series after was never as creepy to me as these two movies. Maybe because I was older when they did the Kolchak TV series, in 1975-1976.

There was a 1974-1975 TV show called Circle of Fear that was very frightening also. I'd love to see it again as an adult.

And I remember a tv commercial around 1971-1972 for a TV movie called The Screaming Woman that looked terifying. I never saw the movie, the commercial alone scared me !

When I was 5 years old, I remember the first episode of Star Trek I saw was "The Man Trap" with the monster that pretends to be people you know, until it gets its paws wrapped around you and kills you by sucking all the salt out of your body. Initially, I wasn't much of a Star Trek fan after that. And slept with the lights on that night.

Dave, I hear you about sleeping with the lights on at night!
Several episodes of the ORIGINAL Outer Limits episodes freaked me out and gave me nightmares..one where an alien from another planet is sent here as a criminal exchange program..it kept putting stuf into a pond and the stuff looked like jello? ANd the monster looked HORRIBLE, like he was made from all diffrent flavors of jello! I did not sleep well after that, or the one called THE ZANTI MISFITS, about these six inch long alien ant dudes who had human faces that were nightmarish! I was 6 - 7 - 8 when that show was new on tv...

I saw the 1958 movie THE BLOB on tv when I was 9, and that night after I'd gone to bed, I saw a thing in my room on the floor, and I thought it was moving towards me and I grabbed my baseball bat and started smashing the shit out of.... a pile of laundry ! LoL!!

THE LEECH WOMAN was on late night tv when I was 10.
I had a tv in my room and watched it, it was on at 2:00 am, I think, it was about a woman who had to absorb the life force totally from a man every day or so..

My older brother would often say mean things to scare me if we were watching these type of movies together! One night, we'd watched scarey movies on tv all night till ten pm or so..and he came into my room, got behind a 5 foot tall Nutcracker type soldier I had that was made of wood and went, " Booo, I am a monster and I will kill you Jerry!" He moved the soldier slowly towards my bed as he said this.....

What a dick!

I loved all those OUTER LIMITS b & w episodes. (The 1990's series was almost total crap, with a few watchable episodes here and there)

But the original series was great. Both seasons are available on DVD. But I already have 41 of the 49 eisodes on videotape, so I haven't rushed to get the DVD's.

I have both the eisodes you list, "The Zanti Misfits"(the ant-aliens are scary looking), and the other you mention titled "The Mice".

The scariest ones for me were :

"Corpus Earthling" (two black rocks that possess people, with Robert Culp)

"It crawled out of the Woodwork" (an energy creature that kills people, then re-animates them, with Ed Asner, and Barbara Luna, from the "Mirror, Mirror" episode of Star Trek)

"The Invisibles" (with Don Gordon, as a pseudo-FBI agent infiltrating a secret conspiracy to take over government officials and control their minds with an alien spore. Richard Dawson is one of the alien conspirators.)

"A Feasibility Study" (where a whole town is abducted by aliens and taken to another planet, testing to see if Earth people make durable slaves, a precursor to abducting the rest of Earth's population as slaves. )

Especially the first season, everything was great about this show, the musical score, the camera angles and shadowy black-and-white photography, and although a bit preachy and a product of its times (1963-1965), it was mostly very well scripted and provocative.

The cinematographer went on just 5 years later to win an Academy Award for his photography in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1970.

I enjoyed The Blob too, a treat in color, a rarity for 50's movies. I enjoyed the 1990's re-make a lot less. It's amazing to me that they can re-make so many movies with like 20 or 50 times the budget as the original (King Kong, Planet of the Apes, The Blob, etc.) and not make a movie a fraction as good as the original.

Yeah, brothers will do that.

While I was the older brother, my younger brother would actually do that to me, when he saw something scared me. I probably gave him payback at some point, when I saw something scared him. Although I don't remember doing so. Maybe I took the high road and let him off the hook.

The toy soldier thing reminds me of a scary scene in Trilogy of Terror, where a woman was being chased by a doll that came alive to kill her.
Another one that resulted in the lights being on all night.

There was an episode of Twilight Zone with Telly Savalis, titled "Living Doll" , with another doll that came to life, that was really creepy too. Fortunately, I saw that one as an adult. One of the best episodes of the series.

My parents have a place in the middle of nowhere, my oldest brother would go outside and bang on the walls of the trailer to freak me out at night. It also didn't help that there was a graveyard not too far up the road and legends about werewolves in the area. Brothers are jerks.

Dave, I have 45 of the 49 Outer Limits episodes. I love the one called "Feasability Study", it is a fantastic one, I hope people would REALLY do something like that to save the rest of Earth.

I also like :

Demon with the Glass Hand

I, Robot

The Children Of Spider County

The Man with The Power

The Production and Decay of Strange Particles

The Sixth Finger

The Form Of Things Unknown

and that one where time slows down for the world except for a man and wife whose daughter is on a tricycle and will get killed unless they can figure a way to save her! The man was in a jet; the woman was in a car, and there was this strange dude trapped in the temporal anomalie with them...
