there have also been a number of "wizard of oz" type moments in lost.

for example, ben's assumed name was "henry gale" - dorothy's father. his story claimed he also attempted to sail around the world in a hot air balloon.

additionally, in this most recent episode, the older jeweler that talks desmond out of purchasing the ring points out a specific man in the crowd who moments later is crushed by a falling building. the man was wearing bright red shoes, not unlike ruby red slippers.

Well, the airplane left from Australia, nicknamed "Oz".

The other day I met a Lost Uber-Geek who told me some interesting things he's noticed about the show:

- Jack's dad goes to Australia to meet his daughter. The woman who tells him to fuck off is Claire's mother. Therefore, Jack is Claire's brother.

We don't know who that woman is for sure (as we never meet Claire's mother in any of her flashbacks, but the assumption among fans is that they are half-siblings.

Quote:

- The real "Sawyer", the man who conned Sawyer's mom and indirectly caused her to kill her husband and herself (right? or something like that) is the guy who also played Kate's dad.

Locke's dad, actually. And we don't actually see the original Sawyer, but can infer from Locke's father's gig as a con-man (conning his son out of a kidney, faking his own death, etc.), that he and the original 'Sawyer' are one and the same.

Quote:

- The first thing we see in the first episode is Jack's face as we wakes up in the beach, right after the crash. If you pause the image, you can see the weird black bee-like stuff reflected in his eyes.

Hadn't noticed that...

Quote:

- The tail of the airplane has the Dharma Initiative logo.

One of my managers at work pointed that out to me as well. Not sure what that means...

Quote:

- When we see Jin and Sun standing in the airport and she accidentally spills something on his shirt, when they leave you can see someone who looks exactly like Jin standing in the background.
- One of the guys in the antactic station at the end of season 2 looks exactly like Jack, if you look carefully.

The guy thinks these last three "facts" mean that everyone in the island is a clone. I kinda buy the first two (I'd heard the first somewhere else), but I'm not sure about the others. Unfortunately, I can't be arsed to check the episodes for any of these things.

That sounds really dumb...

Or the island is a clone of another island. And that island is really Locke's dream of Jack performing surgery on Kate.

Locke has sort of turned into this particular island's resident Gilligan, but I can't really blame him for this one.

I assume He didnt know that entering "77" would blow the place up (based on the fact that I saw no indication that Sayid or Kate told him about the plastique). I think it would, in fact, be a more natural assumption to assume entering 77 would activate a distress signal.

i'd think it was a safe assumption to not trust any more computers on the island.

its also a safe assumption that you should not leave a hostage alone so you can go play more warcraft.

when the fight first started, kate and sayid had to hold their own while locke was playing video games. he didn't come in to join the fight until it was over. then, he was taken hostage by a guy that they had taken hostage, which he didn't help with, and only because that guy was left by himself. by locke.

then they fight again outside and locke gets beat up again while the one-armed sayid kicks even more ass.

Yeah, leaving the guy alone was stupid. I don't dispute that. I was commenting specifically on whether or not it was really that stupid to not realize that 77 might activiate a booby trap. However, as noted above, I do agree that

I'm wondering if John Locke is his name because THE John Locke came up with the Tabula Rasa theory about the mind???

In fact, I'd say that Lost, entertaining as it is, is basically just "gilligan's island," with sci-fi and fantasy elements.

Locke=Gilligan. Constantly screws up changes to get rescued.

Sayid=the Skipper. Ex-military guy.

Hurley=the Millionaire. Cause he is. And like Howell, he had them build a golf course on the island.

Libby=Mrs. Howell. But in a twist, they shot her.

Jack=the Professor.

Claire=Maryann.

The only one without a clear counterpart is Ginger. You have Kate as the "hot" girl, who hits on various men for her advantage, which sort of applies. But Charlie, like Ginger, was a minor celebrity.

And, while there are other chracters, that isn't completely inconsistent with Gilligan, given that every week people would end up on the island and find a way to get on and off without rescuing the castaways.

i actually liked last nights episode. i didn't think locke came off as weenie or as bumbling as he has in the past season/2 episodes. he was much more kickass.

not exactly sure how well he can justify asploding the sub (would it have fit everyone?) however his confrontations with ben were pretty cool. and the point about him walking and ben in the wheelchair still was quite a nice power swap.

it was a good episode, and a great way to show locke getting paralyzed that was unexpected and fit his anger issues.

I liked the episode a lot. It looks like Locke is trying to cut the island off from the rest of the world for some reason.

Question #1: Has Jack always had a tattoo under his left forearm? In the first scene he put his hand on a wall and it was very clear when he was flirting with the scientist lady? I sold my season 1 dvd set so I can't check...

Question #2: Who else thinks sayid is going to get himself another young chick to bang? I have no idea how old alex is, but sayid was looking pretty intently...

As for Locke, yeah, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that a guy who can't walk when he's off the island is probably going to be...extremely...resistent... to the idea of leaving said island.

Naaaaaah.

Watching the episode, I thought Jack would be much more interesting as a character if he turned to the others. By the end, Locke looks a lot more likely to do that.
