at least i think that was her.

thinkin about the pic a bit more...

it definitely looked like a fake image. like, it was the two real people in front of a fake background. that would make the image very similar to the one of desmond and penny, also taken in front of a fake background.

and that made me think that, perhaps, the older monk and the older lady are actually desmond and penny from the future (and thats how they either knew about desmond's future or kept telling him to push on)

The older monk also sounded exactly like Desmond. That could be true but I think its way too much of a stretch for this show.

I don't know. Time travel would explain a lot about this show, including how the Others can know so much about the castaways' pasts and Bens' comments about how the sub created the "illusion" they could leave.

Hands up: How many people laughed out loud at how ludicrous it was for Jack to mouth-off to Sayid about Juliet? I'm not sure what kind of voodoo they worked on Jack's head, but, he's delusional if he thinks he has a sack big enough to talk to a fucking Iraqi Torturer like that.

Whiny daddy's boy is going to wake up with some bamboo under his fingernails if he doesn't tread lightly. What a prat...

I think Sayid knows that Jack is the leader of the group whether he likes it or not. Or he could be waiting for Jack to fuck up big time and take over.

the story was about you and sayid.

and it wasn't fiction.

i wasn't as annoyed by the "jack vs. sayid" moment as i was about how friggin forgiving and/or gullable the lost cast is.

it really doesn't take much for any of them to entirely change their point of view.

if sayid fought jack, he'd win. but then what? sayid is no leader -- no one looks to him. this'd just turn everyone else against him.

I think Pro's argument is that, at this point, Sayid would probably say, out of frustration if nothing else:

"You know what, fuck you, Jack. Ever since we got on this island, you've been acting like you're the boss and, you know what, I was happy with that at first since you seemed like a level headed guy. But lately, all you've done is tell me to do your dirty work (even having me torture a guy who, it turns out, was innocent), get us captured, make us think we needed to rescue your ass, and now, when we have a chance to question one of the leaders of the Others and get some answers, you tell me to be quiet and not even have a simple conversation with her. Fuck that shit. You've been wrong more than right at this point and right now I'm not sure I trust you anymore. And if you think I'm going to be the only one at camp who feels this way once you show up with Ben's buddy here, the creepy female doc with a nice rack, you're crazy. So shut the fuck up, let me talk to whomever I want or I'll kick your ass from here to the Dharma initiative."

Totally!!

It's just this imaginary "understood" rule that Jack....so far, the worst when it comes to making accurate decisions....cannot be questioned by anyone, and has bought into his own 'I am God' image, can mouth off to a guy who can steadily accomplish more for the Lostaways than Doctor Crybaby...and just get away with it? Bullshit...

so, are you mad that sayid hasn't said any of that, or mad that it isn't part of his character? ...because it doesn't appear to be.

jack's persona isn't so much that he makes himself god, but that everyone keeps feeding into it, sayid included. sayid has, and will, challenged a leadership notion, but has been pretty well established as enjoying his number 2 or 3 ranking role. if anything, he puts jack on the pedastool.

I think the point is that, at this point, they've been on the Island for three months, that a lot of shit has gone down, Jack has been shown to be at best a screwup and at worst a pawn of the others and it strains credibility that anybody, let alone Sayid, would continue to put Jack on that pedestal...at least to the extent that they do.

If Sayid had said "fuck you" to Jack as outlined above, and then Jack explained to Sayid (and us) what his point was and it made sense, that would be one thing. But at this juncture it just seems as if everyone is blindly following Jack's "orders" to the point of breaking the suspension of disbelief.

Yeah, it's more irritation at the nonsensical writing than the characters themselves. Why the writers continue to feed us Jack as a supreme being, I'll never know...

i mean, cripes, this is where we're finding fault in suspending belief? the same show where, a page earlier in the thread, we're debating time travel, and how that might "make more sense"?

clearly, everyone from the plane is "lost" in their own confused state, looking for answers, clarity, and/or justifications. jack has been looked to since the beginning, and stepped up in most every instance. its not a supreme role or power that he is wielding. sawyer has gone his own way on occasion, as has kate, sayid, john, even hurley. but after the fractures, they return and look to jack.

part of the plot line now shows jack's latest decision to shake the foundation of his leadership. this mirrors the others following ben (perhaps blindly) in many regards.

its not yet established how far jack's status can carry him versus bringing an other to camp, but its clear that some are wary.

....you have a mancrush on Jack, don't you?

Listen, I hear you. Still, they need to further address exactly why everyone follows Jack. Sure, he's a doctor and keeps them all from dying (most of the time). But, his decisions are relatively more flawed than some of the others. Certainly Locke has lost his way completely. But, Sayid? I'd follow him in a heartbeat because I know he uses rationality and logic, instead of pent-up tantrums...

i think jack is a whiny bitch. but at the same time, no one else is doing anything. you're not asking to change jack's character, you're asking to change sayid's. you'd follow sayid because you love him. but he doesn't want to lead the group, and hasn't yet made any efforts to.

With all due respect, Rob, you're falling into that common trap of excusing implausible reactions simply because of the genre.

We accept things like time travel because its a science fiction story and, if we didn't, there wouldn't be a point to the story.

However, that fantasy element doesn't mean that we have to accept when people act implausibly or out of character. People should, for the most part, act plausibly in any situation. Otherwise, the story's internal logic fails.

Let's use the "Back to the Future" film as a comparison, since it also (potentially) involves time travel.

When Marty went back to the 1950s in the time machine, he ended up on a date with his mother. His mother tried to kiss him and got freaked out because he knew it was his mom. A perfectly natural reaction.

But suppose Marty hadn't gotten freaked out. Suppose Marty had been blase about being kissed and pawed by his own mother. Suppose he had thought it was great. Would you have excused that simply because it was a time travel movie? Of course not. You'd have been creeped out, because that isn't how you expect a person to behave in that situation, regardless of how he got there.

Its the same with Lost. They may be on that Island because of some science fiction or fantasy plot device. But they are still on an island and in in danger. And people who are stranded and in danger will, at some point, tend to get pissed off with each other, frustrated and scared.

i'm all for accepting actions within the genre. im a nerd, after all. i just found it funny that you were discussing how crazy this little personality trait was on a show where, almost literally, nothing makes sense.

however, my point is that what you and pro are asking isn't shown to be within the realm of the characters you're asking it of. from your lil analogy, its you two who are asking marty to boff his mom. ...and you're both disgusting.

sayid's character is acting as sayid's character has always acted. sayid has a military and vicious background, but its one that he often recoils from and wishes he didn' have. he has no aspirations, and has yet to show a desire, to overtake any form of leadership.

and jack's character is acting as jack's has. an emotional man in an emotionless role, being consistantly looked up to to fix the problem, even if he doesn't want to be. most everyone on the island, including sayid and a reluctant sawyer, look to him, and not of jack's choice -- in fact, often much to his chagrin.

off the topf of my head, a truly out of character moment i can think of was when charlie went rogue and beat up a girl. ...and then that sorta went away. that was mostly outta left field, both before and after -- even for his crack whoring self.

but having sayid confront jack and call him a punk and smack him around cuz jack is doing crazy shit? how does that fit in anything we've seen of sayid?

even recently, on the trip to rescue jack, locke was all goin nutty and blowin shit up and murdering people with sonar dog fences and carrying around cartoonish sticks of dynamite (you know, "typical actions within the genre") and sayid was all but didn't do anythign to stop him. and that was of locke and in a smaller group -- a much lesser and easily approachable scenario for sayid to make his "hey, wait a tick, i was a torture guy! " scenario.

its much more likely that sayid's quiter, meticulous and careful character relented to the idea of the chick comin to their beach party because, now, he can keep a closer eye on her. he can spot her moves and plot from up close. its possible he thinks jack has been turned, i.e; michael.

those i can see as "in character" actions.

and then locke can ride in on the monster smoke giraffe and stmop them all to death.

in time.

is the fat guy still fat though?

And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

I don't think so. Their plane crashed on the island, and they are alive. The other plane crashed and no one survived. that would have to mean another dimension or another time line-which is another dimension.

of course, she could be lying.

That's not dissimilar from what I meant. In the recent "Civil War" arc, the idea was that they plucked Mar-Vell from the timeline before he died. In effect, arguably, that created an alternate timeline.

A similar theory has been advanced to explain the life and death of Barry Allen and his various appearances through the time stream after supposedly being killed in the crisis...the same Barry Allen who was in the comic book that Walt was reading on the plane.

Hmmm, that really hot blonde that plays Juliet was in Gia-she had a lesbo scene with Angelina Jolie. I thought I saw her somewhere before.
