Both the Sopranos and (The much, much better) The Shield average about 8-13 episodes per season. People are still enthusiastic about both shows. The Sopranos not so much but that may be because they too long a break between seasons.

Yes, but neither show is a "mystery" per se.

most cable shows have shorter seasons, and they end up being more acclaimed because of it (people have to wait a bit longer, the seasons are condensed, less filler episodes). I'm just glad it will get a proper ending and not a rushed finale.
Bow ties are coool.

I'm not saying I want more eps. I'm saying that they ought to show the same number of eps over a shorter time period.
One of the cool things about shows like "24" and even previous seasons of "Lost" was that they'd run an entire season uninterrupted. It helped keep your interest.

I thought two 24 episode seasons would be better too, until, looking back on season 3, I realized how much filler eps we got, all in service of the season finale. Same goes for season 2, to a lesser degree.
Seasons are story units, just like episodes or scenes. I'd say it takes them about 15 episodes of substance to tell the season-wide story. Two 24 episode seasons are two long stories with at least 9 filler episodes each. Three 16 episode seasons are three shorter stories with much more substance.
I mean, they couldn't give us 8 or so filler episodes, like they did this year, if the season only lasts 16 episodes. This means those 48 episodes we have left will be used better.
Now, I think two 16 eps seasons would be even better, but that's me...

i agree. plus, i like knowing that it'll be on for 3 more years, and not just 2, since the rest of tv is generally crap. Quote:

But the math is the same.
I'm saying take those same eps and just run them over two years instead of three. How would that translate into filler?

Each season has a clear theme. Season 1 was introductory, 2 was the hatch, 3 was demistifying The Others. As I said, it takes them about 15 eps to tell a seasonwide story. The remaining eps are inevitably filler. This happens with pretty much every show with a plot.
If they plan and produce three seasons and show them in two batches, the middle one would have to be cut in half and interrupted for nine months or so. Narratively, that wouldn't make any sense. If they had done that with season 3, a lot of people wouldn't know where Hurley's van came from. Sawyer's comment to Tom before killing him would have little resonance: he's referencing a small moment we saw more than a year ago, during the first half of the season.

During a panel about the new season, they talked a little about flashforwards: http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=11461“One of the things that we wanted to do since the very end of season one... is the flash forward,” Lindelof confirmed. The third season finale ended with the revelation that Jack and Kate had somehow gotten off the island and that we had been seeing “flash-forwards” throughout the episode, not flashbacks. The panel also announced that in the new season, the show will feature both flashbacks and flash-forwards. “The operative question is how forward and with whom. But if you continue to watch the show you will be pleasantly surprised,” Lindelof said.
The creators felt they had to wait to introduce the flash-forward until they knew they would be allowed to end the series, and when. It was announced in May that ABC would air three more seasons of 16 episodes each, beginning in February 2008.
“Previously, the storytelling of the show had taken place in the present and had gone into the past,” Cuse explained. “We always wanted to introduce this notion of the future. Now with an end date we have the certainty to allow ourselves to do that. Once we knew, OK we're down to 48 episodes, we thought, now we can put it out there.”
Lindelof also clarified the end of the Season 3 finale. “We want to communicate that what you saw with Kate and Jack was not the end of the show, as has been suggested. The show has never really been about getting off the island. There's this whole chapter of our story that takes place off the island but we couldn't start telling it until we told the audience that the show is going to end. If you had seen the Kate and Jack scene and it was just another episode, as opposed to one less episode, I think you would have thrown up your hands and said, ‘They are fucking stalling again!' But because we're really moving towards the end now, we felt we owed it to the audience to do something radical and say to everybody, ‘Come with us all the way to the end, it won't be a waste of time.' And ABC let us do it, which is cool.” Check the article for spoilers on who's coming back.
