Anyways, Pink is Mr. Floyd, the main character in The Wall. It says in the lyrics of the album that he beats his wife but that's not shown in the movie.

I have three questions:
1. In what ways will the proven existence of the pentaquark effect our understanding of particle physics?
2. What are the potential drawbacks to replacing my right hand with a flame-thrower? I can't see any myself.
3. In a hypothetical invasion of an average sized city, what is the best method of attack -
Giant radioactive insects, Some kind of massive raygun, concealed in a dormant volcano, or a team of evil super heroes?

No team of evil anything. Never works out.
Hiding massive rayguns in dormant volcanos is a good way to wake them back up.
Giant radioactive insects are hard to control and conceal. Plus they don't survive very long.
I believe the best way is to set up a quiet agenda using the media (TV sitcoms and Radio programs and fashion magazines) to brainwash the general population. That should take a solid ten years. Next, spread word of the government holding a secret war with <insert current evil nation here> that they are trying to keep people from knowing about. Set up a blockade and no mans land around the city, carpeted with landmines and the such, for a mile and a half around the city. Establish guards in military garb. Within a week, bomb the city in a precise manner, destroying all the hospitals, food places, and media stations. Then unleash a minor plague to wipe out the elderly (who might more easilly remember how good things were before...). After one and a half months of silence, post messages around town about busses which will allow anyone over the age of 25 to go work and get food to bring back. At the same time, spread another, stronger, plague to scare the people left and make them all the more eager to take the busses to nowhere. 'Cause the busses will fall into the grand canyon or something. "Accidently." Then, to finalize your invasion and lock in your control, kill anyone you ended up needing the help of, destroy all evidance, and walk into town as their savior, reestablishing their television, rebuilding their radios, and the such.
This plan works best if you kill most of the world (at the same time as spreading word of the secret war) and are invading the city for the purpose of entertainment only. As for invading while major governments still stand would be futile. It would also be great to set up a few scattered cities like this so you have somewhere to lead your people after 'rescuing' them.

I read in 'New Scientist' about an experiment where they were able to produce what they think was a pentaquark. It existed for a ridiculously short period of time before decaying into a meson and a neutron.
Apparently Pentaquarks were common just after the big bang, so baring in mind my autodidactic approach to physics and limited understanding of such things, what I want to know is:
Will all pentaquarks break down in the same way (into a meson and a neutron) and, if that is the case, were there neutrons before there were pentaquarks, or did neutrons come into existence as a result of short-lived pentaquarks breaking down until they reached some kind of stable structure?

It's a good idea but it all seems a bit far-fetched to me.
Using the media to brainwash the general population? Secret wars? Bombing hospitals?
Surely it would never happen. People wouldn't stand for it. On the other hand resistance will be all but futile against my swarm of head-gnawing ultra-locusts.

By our making, yes. The kinds of extreme environment at the big bang are very different from now. The laws of physics were all indistinguishable and the temperatures must have been unimaginable to say the least. The density of materials, the shape of space... it would be a quality assumption to believe these pentaquarks would have entirely different behavior and stability at such a time. A kind of lifespan and stability scientists today would have a fucking hard ass time trying to replicate. quote: and, if that is the case, were there neutrons before there were pentaquarks, or did neutrons come into existence as a result of short-lived pentaquarks breaking down until they reached some kind of stable structure?
I'm not sure about the second part, but I'm almost positive the pentaquarks came first. Quarks are much much smaller than neutrons. They were able to be stable much earlier than even electrons could form. I have some of the current numbers in my notes somewhere. I'll try to find them. Has the "history" and "future" of the universe timelined. VERY cool.

I've got a book by Marcus Chown called 'The Magic Furnace' which is about the origin of atoms. I haven't read it yet - perhaps sometime in August I'll get down to reading it.
I seem to recall that during the early stages of the universe it was pretty much Hobson's choice when it came to atoms - there was Hydrogen, Helium and, I'm not certain, but I think that there were also traces of Lithium.
Diamonds aren't forever as most of the other atoms, including carbon, formed later on, after of the destruction of the first generation of stars.
That's a lot further along the timeline from pentaquarks . Chown has another book called 'The Afterglow of Creation' so maybe that deals with the events directly after the big bang. I don't know.
I never paid much attention to science at school, but reading Richard Feyman's books and studying those parts of physics that can be expressed in layman's terms really has given me a tremendous sense of peace. When you look at the universe in terms of particle behaviour everything suddenly appears pointless and ridiculous. You come to realise that, in the grander scheme of things, everything you do is pretty much irrelevant.
That kind of knowledge takes all the pressure off. You don't have to worry about dying or fucking up and you can get on with enjoying life.
