Nope. I read his autobiography though. Good read.

What about that episode where The Doctor fought the Daleks? That was cool, too...

Heh. Which one? When someone says "Doctor" and "Daleks" in the same sentence, the first thing I think of is William Hartnell's second episode, " The Daleks." It is such a classic!

I am enjoying the chat about Charlie Chaplin; Until recently, I thought I was the only one here who enjoyed (And owned) his movies.

I like Alfred Albert myself. Edna is so hot though. Ever see the Kid Auto Race? The one he haphazard-ed the classic costume for? It's good, I tells ya.

You mean Albert Austin, the skinny guy? He's great! The more ridiculous facial hair they could pile on him, the more I loved it.

Kid Auto Races at Venice is suh-weet. You can absolutely see the spark that caught everyone's eye... that little bit of genius that made such a mundane scenario hilarious.

...And, yes, Edna is. That Charlie was a lucky boy.

What was the name of the big guy who worked in many of Chaplin's movies? All I can recall of him is that Chaplin
made sure he always had a job in his movies.... this man often played Chaplin's nemesis.

Anybody here see the movie "Chaplin"? It stars Robert Downey Jr., who did an excellent job of portaying the Bristish born comedian.

It's a fantastic movie!

Eric Campbell. He was already mentioned.

I hated it. It was sensationalized beyond reason (Chaz already had a pretty damn dynamic life) and taken way out of context.

The actor's name is Mack Swain.

I just looked it up on a copy of "The Gold Rush" that I did not know I had! Damn, It was all the way in the back of the shelf, too..no wonder I did not remember that I have a copy. The only one I may be lacking might be the one where Charlie portayed a dictator, I think it is called " The Little Dictator"?

Thank you, Uschi. I just checked, I have "The Great Dictator" after all! I have "Tillie's Punctured Romance" playing now as I type this..another fav of mine.

I have not watched these in a few years...it is good to see them again. I recall buying them from two Ebay sellers back in 2002...one of them said he had all but 20 of them, and I am now certain that I got those other 20 from another Ebay seller. I'll have to watch them all, and look up a complete listing of all his movies to verify whether I have all of them.

I've read his autobiography, too, although it has been quite a while, now. There are a couple of books that make nice companions to his autobiography (since he did leave a lot of gaps and glossed over a lot, which is - of course - the prerogative of a person writing their autobiography). Robinson's Chaplin: His Life and Art and Taylor's Tramp spring to mind.

You didn't like Attenborough's Chaplin? I admit it was highly stylized and did fictionalize some bits and omit others, but I thought the overall tone and the particular performances (especially Downey's) were powerful, and it succeeded in giving a new generation more insight into the breadth of what Chaplin achieved and who he was.

...Especially since you know that so many people these days seem to think that watching a silent film sounds about as appealing as sitting through an eighth grade band recital. Showing some people that film first has been a great way for me to get them hungry to watch his work. And, of course, when they see the work, it speaks for itself. I... or, really, Charlie... have never failed to make converts.

Have you seen "The Cat's Meow"? It was a recent flick by Peter Bogdanovich about the cruise on Hearst's boat where a prominent director died suspiciously. Chaplin was one of the people on the real-life cruise, and is portrayed in the film by Eddie Izzard. It's definitely worth taking a look at.

(Also, if you have any theatres that do silent movie revivals near you, check it out! There's nothing like seeing Chaplin's films - or Keaton's or Fairbanks', etc., for that matter - on the big screen with the full-on live organist. )

I guess I must have missed that Chaplin thread of yours, Uschi. Sorry for that. I saved it to my favorites and will read it when I am not so damn tired, LoL.

Turner Classic Movies runs silent movies some Sunday nights around midnight. I enjoy them immensly! I also like movies made from 1927 to 1945..after the war ended, they seemed somehow..different.
