ok, paraphrased.
Marty and Co. went to a parallel universe (like where Biff wrenches the world) which COULD have been his future. In that future, he saw his future self because in that future he traveled to the future. It is mostly suprisin that he didn't remember (what with the fax and all) that he would be lurking around at the time.

On the other hand, I know you've got more information about this particular question than I apparently do (you mentioned somewhere before about the impossibility of seeing yourself or something) so feel free to debunk this.
