Marty and Co. went to a parallel universe (like where Biff wrenches the world) which COULD have been his future. In that future, he saw his future self because in that future he traveled to the future. It is mostly suprisin that he didn't remember (what with the fax and all) that he would be lurking around at the time.
On the other hand, I know you've got more information about this particular question than I apparently do (you mentioned somewhere before about the impossibility of seeing yourself or something) so feel free to debunk this.

Ok, I haven't ever really analyzed the movies and haven't seen II in forever, but here goes.
Fine. The world goes along this 'mainstream' because that's the path 'reality' follows for that universe. But it isn't unchangable, and it isn't isolated. But fucking abouit it differnt timestreams, Doc and Marty jimmierigged the universe to their own purposes... until the end of III where Doc reveals the whole time (heh) it's been basically a block-time universe and nothing really matters a whole bunch what you do. Thus the train.
