Go to the Wiki, and click on the Ubermap. That might help orientate yourself.
All the outsider villages are on the south coast, so you'll find one sooner or later.
Otherwise, you're a pirate, right? You can always wade deep into the water, drown yourself, and reincarnate back at the shipwreck. Then you'll know where you are.

No bridge - you have to wade across some shallow water. But you'll see the edge of the island.
Wiksik headhunters have started a competition to get the most heads from Durham, so it'll be pretty noisy there for a while. Good chance to try and kill some aggressive natives.
