More specifically, what's going on with the writers of the Superman books. In the latest issue of Action Comics,Clark comes off like Silver-age Clark & Perry White making the comment to the effect of "Of all the men why did Lois marry HIM".Ummmmmm....I thought that the modern Clark Kent was an accomplished author and confident reporter that had award winning columns that made the Daily Planet money,as well as friends with Perry White. This has been going on a bit since just before Infinite Crisis.....making Clark less than what he has been or simply ignoring his accomplishments.I don't like it one bit.

Me neither. I also liked the dichotomy- Superman can change the world physically, while Clark can change the world intellectually and emotionally.

But DC has spent the past several years, if not decades, telling us how Superman was an inspiration and symbol to the people of earth, meaning that in fact he was changing the world intellectually and emotionally.

I didn't realize I was now DC's official spokesperson. Snarf made an observation how he views Superman. I made an observation in response.

Yeah Allan, I'm with you. Clark was written well during the first act of the One Year Later arc. Otherwise they've put him back to Richard Donner movies Clark. I blame Jeph Loeb.

Do I always need a reason?

He did a lot of bringing back of Silver Age themes, I'd like to blame him for getting the ball rolling with that trend.

Back on topic here.I understand about the movie and everything but that still doesn't explain how Clark goes from competent reporter as recent as "OYL" to bumbling oaf.If anything this would really raise eyebrows around the Daily Planet and would cause people to pay more attention to Clark not less and would prove a greater risk to his secret identity insofar as his actions would fall under greater scrutiny. Not to mention the fact he could lose his job(again).

Actually, he was also "competent" during the first OYL arc, where he had no powers and Perry loved him because he was dedicated to his work.

Exactly. That's what I thought about Superman Returns. Clark was trying too hard to be a bumbling fool, you'd figure that'd Lois would take notice and put 2 and 2 together. At least to realize that it's an act, not necessarily that Clark is Superman.

You mean the Superman books have ignored a character's development? Shocking!

This is nothing new. They did the same thing with Jimmy Olsen. He went from being a smart journalist who wound up being hired by GBS to the same old "Gee whiz!" imbecile he was in the Silver Age.

Well to me,and I know it's been done plenty of times and in other books as well,to progress a character for years and the regress them is editorial stupidity.

This is true. I've read all those fucking books where Clark and Jimmy are developed as characters, but I don't give a fuck if the characterisation changes now that there's different writers. 1) because you can't expect everyone else to read 20 years of continuity, and 2) because they're all just interpretations of the characters that come and go, as they always have,

Actually,I expect the editor of the book to know what's been done & how the character has been written & to make sure that established canon is being adhered to(not strictly of course but within a loose confine of what's come before).Now....if they decide to regress due to orders from on high, well ok.Can't do anyrhing about that. It's like the origin of Superman....these days I have no idea which version(s) are the correct one.Byrne,Waid or whoever else has done done it recently & the Superman editor(s) and/or creative team should say.."This is it.This is the one we recognize as the origin". That's all I want.Give those who have followed the books for the last 20 years something definite.

I think its fair to say that DC has, and will, constantly revamp and revise bits and pieces of his origin as different writers come on board.

Besides, if you think about it, SR may have been a box office disappointment but it was still seen by more people over a few weeks than read the comic book all year.

I think you can get progression and a solid continuity when you have the same group of people making the books for a long period of time... during the 88-99 period it was basically the same bunch of dudes, with people coming and going at times. Then, Loeb's team came around and they also kept a consistency within their crappiness for as long as they lasted. There's no doubt that the characters they were writing were very different from the Jurgens era ones, since they were less realistic and more Silver Age inspired. They made some pretty big changes to make the show more like the animated series, and then Smallville.
Since then, no writers have stuck around for too long, so obviously that means there's no consistency in the characterizations (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Tomorrow a new definite team of writers could come along and develope the characters for the next 20 years.

And by the way, SR doesn't qualify as a "box office disappointment" in any sense... it just didn't do as extraordinarily well as the studio hoped.
