there are 2 school of thought on g-man and the political forum.
one you have the people who think they know whats best for you opposed to g-man being forced out.
and second you have the people who think you guys know enough to post what you want without being edited/moved/deleted.
the first group who try to hang on to power behind the scenes feel really threatened by the people having power, and are working hard to make sure that rob is miserable by constantly whining abot g-man being removed.

And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

All of that is still true.
He and I disagreed a lot about how that forum--any forum--should be run. It even resulted, in some degree, in my earlier call to resign and resignation.
However, earlier in that same thread, after a looooooooooooong bout with another poster, G-man rescinded. He even said he was sorry. That's something I thought he would never do. And he agreed to a new outlook on the forum.
But there are those, like bsams, who dislike G-man very much, and refused to give him a chance. Do they have reason to dislike him? Sure. But continuing to argue the point was, in my view, a little childish. And so it went. Attack after attack. Not to say G-man was a totally innocent victim here, but there are those who never even considered giving him a chance.
But I did, because I still think he could be good for that forum if he wanted to mod, but he doesn't. He resigned, and has already stated that he doesn't wish to serve.
So there you go, moot point.

Well, as I said, the G-man thing is a moot point.
Now reunifying the two forums is still a good idea, I think. The challenge would be to keep the deep thought threads coming in and interesting, while standing next to the political threads.
When they were together, the political threads dominated. There is absolutely no denying that. And they dominated, at least partially, because flame wars last longer and get more views.
Putting 'em back together would be a good idea, but it will present its own problems.

Not necessarily.
I always advocated the splitting of the sports forum as I felt that the wrestling part of it dominated, and stopped people from posting other sports related topics.
Once Animalman replaced PenWing as mod there was definetly an upswing in other sports related topics, to the point that wrestling isnt the dominant force it was.
All it took was a mod that had other interests to bring the interest back to the forum.
For my money a reunification of those forums & the induction of a mod who has little of no interest in politics could help the forum no end!

I don't know how I feel about any of this.
BUT : If the two forums can be reunited....and it works.. then, I am all for it.
Having no Mod in the Politics/Current events forum, and leaving it as it is could be interesting. It might make it fun enough that those who avoided it might become more likely to post there now.
Having a new mod(s) could simply bring about the same problems and flame wars it was plagued with before.
Or, it could make it different enough that posters who avoided it might be enticed to check it out.
When I think about it, why do we have mods at all? Other boards which are repressive and controlled with an iron fist use mods to delete posts, threads, and ban repeat offenders.
This is not such a place. It is an experiment in depravity. The only way you could get banned in here is if you were so evil and disruptive that it would become a moral imperitive that Rob give you the boot.
Mods don't ban people here. They don't normally delete or move threads, and they aren't warning people and then banning them. Only Rob can ban you in here.
I'm not urging for any particular direction, or for all mods to be demoted. I just want people to think about this carefully before a decision is made.

I believe the mods are here, mostly, to promote discussion, with the introduction of new topics on a regular basis. The ability to delete posts, threads, etc. is secondary. A fail safe, if you will.
But that's something Rob could better address. I'm just a guy who's sitting in his cubicle, extremely bored.

The only person who I've known to be banned was balloonknot, who was soon accepted back into the rkmbs fold.
Threads do get moved sometimes. I've noticed it in just about every forum. I don't think I've seen a thread get deleted. I know that as mod I've never deleted a thread. At most I moved it to the off topic forum. I think that's the general trend.
Rob isn't the only person who can ban.

Personally I dont visit that forum because I hate politics, especially American politics, but when the two forums were one, I tried posting there because it covered more, but ultimately I didnt like the way it was run.

Where assholes would de-rail serious discussions just to harass people whose political views differed from their own. I recall one topic in particular, where WBAM began a topic on Christianity, and trolls repeatedly overwhelmed the topic with off-topic insults and banter, to the point that after 3 or 4 pages, WBAM just finally stopped posting.
I saw that happen a lot before G-man became moderator. But when G-man became moderator, he made it clear that OFF-TOPIC inappropriate bullshit would not be tolerated, and would be moved or deleted. And it was.
And you had people like r3x29yz4a, Prometheus, Mxy, BSAMS and a few others who constantly spammed the POLITICS forum to harass G-man, but their harassments were relatively minor, relative to before G-man became moderator.
If it returns to that, then fuck you assholes, I just won't participate.
All this babyshit whining about G-man as moderator.
It reminds me of a cop friend of mine who talks about incidents where he goes to arrest an identified suspect at their known home address, who happens to be black, and the suspect fights him and/or pulls a weapon on him. So he disarms the guy, wrestles him to the ground and cuffs him. Then later the suspect and his family file a false complaint, saying he used excessive force, called him a "nigger", etc., as vindictive payback on the cop for simply doing his job.
So say what you will about G-man, but he did a good job, and it was appreciated, by those of us who aren't spammers, trolls and/or politically intolerant of any view that opposes their own.
With no guiding hand to reign in the trolls, I fully expect POLITICS to become the off-topic2 forum.

G-man tolerated an incredible amount of infantile bullshit from you guys.
The only time he moved or deleted was with an exceptional lack of civility, or off-topic sniping that drowned out the point of the political issue being discussed. Honestly, there were times that I liked some of the off-topic banter, and had my posts moved too, and wish it had remained because it was fun and gave a little comedy relief that I didn't feel interrupted the more serious overall discussion.
But G-man felt differently, and it was his call as mod. If I'm ever a moderator, I can do it my way. Like I said before, I think Rob Kamphausen does a great job, but I don't agree with his decisions 100% either.
But that's a far cry from the partisan suppression of liberal opinion that you and a few other character assassins allege G-man to have done.

And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.
