Piggie, no love for American Beauty. I think it's one of the greatest scores.

The score Maralyn Manson did for Resident Evil was fucking brilliant! The soundtrack to "Baraka" is hands down the best collection of music out there. Dead Can Dance are highly under recognized by the public (Lisa Gerrard being second only to Ms. Lennox, IMHO).

There are a lot that I like, but here are a few that I listen to fairly often for the intrumental music

Star Wars
Indiana Jones
Superman
Tarzan (Disney version)
Treasure Planet
Lord of the Rings

Some non-movie scores I like are from video games such as the Lunar series, Kingdom Hearts and Wild ARMS and also from some attractions at Disney World like the ride Soarin' and the shows Fantasmic! and Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. There also used to be a parade called Tapestry of Nations that had cool music.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Wars
Superman
Titanic (movie, meh - score, excellent)
GWTW
ET
Almost all the Disney animated flicks
Highlander
Jaws (c'mon - its like four notes, but it still can give me chills!)
West Side Story
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

I'm sure I'm leaving out a ton of others...

Agreed! Star Wars would not have been the same without John Williams. He composes and conducts fantastically!!!

Several in my list were his scores.

Oh yeah, the soundtrack to Princess Mononokee.

And probably Pan's Labyrinth, if that darn CD ever comes in.

FUCKING AWESOME thread, Peejus!

My dream is to write film scores. It probably won't happen, as the field is unimaginably competitive, but a guy can dream. The Apollo 13 score was what most directly inspired me to start creating music, as I remember it. A number of other film scores have impacted me over the years, but that one really must top the list for me.

After that, the most influential score for me would have to be Lord Of the Rings, which sparked my interest in ethnomusicology and non-Western music. I was also heavily influenced by the scores of Jurassic Park and the original Star Wars trilogy (who wasn't?), Field Of Dreams, The Hunt For Red October, Contact, and even though I can't stand the film itself, Titanic. Other notable scores include the Back to the Future series, pretty much every Star Trek film, Gettysburg, and Forrest Gump (possibly my favorite film, period). Too many more to name on command.

The orchestral cinematic score we take for granted today very nearly died out in the 1970s, as more and more films drew on scores inspired by and soundtracks consisting of popular music. John Williams resurrected it by defying convention with Star Wars: A New Hope, followed soon after by Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Before long, orchestral scores had re-entered almost every genre of film, thanks to the work of John Williams and his generation of composers. Though he is still active today (albeit less often), Williams has been joined and to some extent succeeded by who I refer to as the Big Three of cinematic composition - James Horner (Apollo 13, Titanic, etc.), Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Saving Private Ryan, etc.), and Howard Shore (LOtR, Silence of the Lambs, etc.).

There are a number of other great composers working in Hollywood right now, like Trevor Rabin, who scores most of Jerry Bruckheimer's movies (including Remember the Titans, Gone in Sixty Seconds and National Treasure), and Danny Elfman, who scored the Spider-Man films and who composes and performs for most of Tim Burton's movies.

As I said, I would really love to be able to do what all those composers do. But we'll just have to see. Thanks again for this thread, Peejus.

go.

I forgot, I really like the soundtrack to Hook too.

You can pretty much put me in the "anything by John Williams" club, but the ones I mentioned are particular favorites.

I forgot to add The Back To The Future soundtracks.

Contact had Lovely music!

John Willams went back and altered much of his work on Star Wars; I liked the original Asteroid Field chase scene, as it was EXACTLY on the lp, ( Yes, I had the LP soundtrack to Empire in 1983. ) which was the same in the movie. Williams went back and changed it so that it bears only a slight resemblance to the original.

Thankfully, the movie still has all the original music.

The Cd's now are different to reflect William's remastering them. Some people have both original and remixed soundtracks - the originals are hard to find these days.
