Your parents are very misinformed about Judaism. We believe in an afterlife, but our version is very different from what most of the world thinks. We build our own place in the next life by what we do (or do not do) in this one. What that means, and what it is, I do not know for sure.

I can neither prove nor disprove it, but I just know that there is an afterlife, that our soul goes somewhere else at the conculsion of this existance. It is a rule of elementary physics : Energy cannot be destroyed, only diverted. Our souls have energy, therefore, the soul goes somewhere.
The soul comes from God, and yearns to return to God. However, the soul must purify itself for that to happen. That's why people keep coming back here. That's why bad things happen to good people. The soul needs to experience certain things so that it can purify itself and return to God. I can't tell you what that means, but that's how it is, according to Judaism.
