Judaism does not believe this. Judaism believes any person who is good will be welcome in the world to come. What it means to be "good" is up for debate, but basically it means any monotheist who lives a righteous life.

My parents always told me that there is no afterlife for jews, that jews do not believe in a life after this one. Maybe they were given incorrect information...and it got passed down to me.

It would appear that I am the most spiritual member of my family. I do not believe in religion, but I have always felt close to GOD, and work hard to do the right thing.

I can neither prove nor disprove it, but I just know that there is an afterlife, that our soul goes somewhere else at the conculsion of this existance. It is a rule of elementary physics : Energy cannot be destroyed, only diverted. Our souls have energy, therefore, the soul goes somewhere.

I would be curious as to how many scientists do believe that religion and science can co - exist together in harmony? I believe that the two can.

Your parents are very misinformed about Judaism. We believe in an afterlife, but our version is very different from what most of the world thinks. We build our own place in the next life by what we do (or do not do) in this one. What that means, and what it is, I do not know for sure.

The soul comes from God, and yearns to return to God. However, the soul must purify itself for that to happen. That's why people keep coming back here. That's why bad things happen to good people. The soul needs to experience certain things so that it can purify itself and return to God. I can't tell you what that means, but that's how it is, according to Judaism.

I don't want to come back here again. After this life ends, I'm gonna ask GOD really nicely if I can stay in the afterlife, even if I am not ready. Maybe he makes an occasional exception?

Until it was brought to them and they were given an entire worldview with which to study. At which point, they no longer suffered ignorance.

Christianity has reached all across the world by now. There's no way anyone can miss it. So if hell really exists and you end up going there, don't bother blaming God when His Word was right in front of you the whole time.

Christianity was not a blessing to these people. They went from a self sufficient nomadic life...to being slaughtered, seperated by force from thier families, and subjugated. The only 'sin' that was committed there was by the 'Christian' colonists.

But you belong to a religion that does believe that. So even though you might personally not believe it you support something that does.

Okay, CJ, I will change that to " Often times, the general message of most religions is that you will burn in hell if you do not believe in Jesus and go to church and live a pure life.

The message itself is delivered by the religious leaders who, all too often are indulging in sin themselves...using donations to build their own house, having sex outside their marriage ( Swaggert - The Bakkers ) and of course what about all the ones who do it and haven't gotten caught? ( Yet ) Okay - I am NOT saying they are all like that...but many are.

I have heard far too many worshippers of Christianity, Catholicism, and Judiasm tell me I am going to hell for the following reasons :

It's in the Bible ( I'm an Abomination blah blah blah ! )

I am told that I cannot believe in Jesus because I am a Jew. ( And when I tell people who feel that way that I DO believe in Jesus they get angry, as though I have entered some elitist country club that has a " no Jews " allowed policy! Thus, Jews who stray from their own religion are Hellbound, but, wait! I hear that I will go to Hell if I do NOT believe in him. Can you say "Catch 22? "

Some fellow jews have told me I am in trouble with God because I am a jew who believes in Jesus. Excuse me, but Jesus was a jew. Also, I have actually met people who have told me Jesus was NOT jewish...

Oaky, I am NO longer saying that every last person on Earth who is religious is saying that those who do not worship as they do are automatically Hellbound, but I have encountered far too much of that in my life for my own liking.

I am spiritual but follow no religion. I did take the most prominent and important message of the bible - which was from Jesus..." Be good to others. "

It works for me.

I'm just worried that people here are mistaking the loudest voices for the majority. And I'm not just limiting this idea to this particular topic. This applies to just about anything in this forum.

Now, most of you know I'm a devout Catholic. With that in mind:

1. If you read the gospels, you'll note that Jesus was not slamming people for ignoring Jewish Laws, but for other things, like ignoring the sick and poor. I've taken that to mean Jesus (and God) cares less about the cultural and traditional aspects of worship, and cares more about how you treat you fellow man.

If I go to hell, it's not going to be because I ate a burger on a Friday in Lent. It will be because of snide remarks I said about a previous coworker, or because I didn't do anything while this poor kid was being teased on the bus back in high school.

2. So, why join an organized religion in the first place? Why follow Tradition? I didn't have to become Catholic. I'm lucky to have the sort of family that encourages me in everything I do, but they see no reason in actually directing me. They don't care what I do, so long as I'm happy doing it. (I've often predicted that if I decided to become a lesbian, my warren of a family wouldn't care, so long as she didn't smoke.)

I think many people decide on a religion because it gives them a code, a moral compass, or a guide. I like the disciple in my religion. It's fucking tough to be a Catholic in this world. You know what it's like to piss off a hot guy because you wont give him a blow job, because part of you knows you made a promise to yourself? And this other part of me says No one else has an stupid code of honor like you, why act in such a silly way? Realism and Romanticism isn't just for literature. It happens all the time.

It's not easy. But if it wasn't hard, I don't know if I felt I was accomplishing anything.

3. Knights had chivary. Samurai have bushido. Now, in both cases, we've heard about knights and samurai that didn't follow any code. It makes for good drama, anyways. But does that make the knights and samurai that follow their code any less noble?

I'm trying to use a Western and non-Western concept to explain a point. Organized religion sets a standard. And everyone falls below the standard at some piont. We're human. Being human didn't begin when God created Adam, it began when Eve bit the apple.

I get pissed when abortion clinics get bombed or a priest scandel errupts, just like everyone else. But I tend to think it's the person that created the problem, not the organization. Being raised in a Republican states by a Catholic family can produce either a terrorist or a saint. Can anyone, religious or not, point a finger at the organization and say 'how dare you produce a terrorist' when that same organization produced a saint.

4. Klinton likes men a little too much. I like booze a little too much. Is either sin worse than the other? I don't know.

I've got all sorts of sins hidden in my little body. I'm in no position to tell anyone here where they're going or for what reason.

One thing that I've wondered ever since I understood the concept of hell is what happened to Judas. He committed the ultimate crime. Did he understand the consequences of his actions? Was he in it for the money, or was he just a confused man who didn't know if he was following a hero or a hoax? And is there a chance that Jesus forgave him? If Judas isn't in hell, then we all have a good shot.

5. The only people really going to hell are the lawyers. *swing!*

CJ - I like how you said that.

I guess I need to NOT let how much I heard that I was going to hell when I was a kid color how I percieve religion now, as an (almost ) 50 year old man.

I still like "custom made religion " I made for myself while in my early 20's.

I believe in being good to others. It isn't always easy, as people are people. I believe in GOD. I talk to him sometimes. He has yet to talk back....

I worry about going to hell, and whenever I tell that to a friend, they get upset and remind me that I am a good person. I guess I feel guilt over not being able to keep the ones closest to me from dying. That will be with me all my life, I expect.

I guess that is part and parcel of being human.

Then why be Catholic? Why not live your live by your own moral code? Why do you have to associate yourself with an organization that has different views than your own?

I'm asking this because this is one of the reasons I left the church. I got tired of having some guy I didn't know tell me how to best live my life. Theres some things I like about religion but I can't live with myself if I was living my life by someone else's moral code.

If a guy isn't interested in you because you refuse to do something you don't want to do, its his loss. Just don't tell him you're not doing it because you made a promise to god, no guy will ever believe that.

This is another reason why I don't like to be associated with groups. No matter what, people will see you as the most extreme part of that group. I left the church because I was told to look past my priests problems (he never molested kids buy he abused his power). I can't do something like that.

Who says I disagree? I may wrap my brain around it differently than most people, but I don't feel like there's a conflict of interests.

Dude...I think there's something fucked up about all the churches y'all go to. Klinton, you, others...there's this 'when I was a little boy' trama that's just so foreign. Fire...brimstone...fire...brimstone...is that all you guys heard? Because I suppose that's what would turn me off too.

I have noticed a difference between Southern Catholics and...others. I saw this at UF, where people came from different states. Outside of the South, being Catholic is a culture and a social symbol. Sort of like being Jewish. I had a roommate that decided she would only marry a Catholic and she would only have a Catholic wedding with a full Mass. I asked why, because she never even set her foot in a church during Easter, and she got real pissed.

There's this sort of social snobbery from these non-Southerners with their Catholic private school education and their upper-middle class parents. I'm not implying that every Cradle Catholic that goes to a private school is an automatic asshole -- but let's just say my kids are going to public school just like their mamma.

I think this all occured because in the South, Catholicism was never really liked to begin with. First of all, to many Southerners, the only Catholics are the Hispanics. I'm not kidding. Here in Tampa, if you want to buy your kid some Catholic jewelry, you still go to downtown Ybor (the historical Cuban district). When you combine that was intermarring among denominations, you get a very different sort of Catholic. Mix in econimic differences, and I think it's safe to say that Catholics in the South are different from their northern cousins.

Okay, I couldn't say to a guy without cracking up. I don't know why. That just sounds so...backwoods Baptist. (See? that's what Catholic snobbery is like. I really don't mean what I say, I'm just using the phrase to make a point.)

My religion is very private. My personal practices are private. I simply don't express them to people. You're not going to ever catch me saying 'Baby Jesus says I shouldn't...' I tend to internalize a lot of things, and religion is one of them. I don't socialize with people from church. And the people I do hang out probably think religion's the last thing on my mind.

I don't pray in public. I don't 'spread the word' or anything like that. I think it's tacky. But if one of your grandparents died or you sister is in a car crash, I will go up to my room at the end of the night and I'll pray. Alone.

This is another reason why I don't like to be associated with groups. No matter what, people will see you as the most extreme part of that group. I left the church because I was told to look past my priests problems (he never molested kids buy he abused his power). I can't do something like that.

I'm not saying we should all be hooked up on a grid, but being so anti-group is just as silly as being feverishly devoted to a group. Either way you come off sounding a little emo.

I don't see how one person can have the same morals as a group with millions in it. Thats my own view.

Dude...I think there's something fucked up about all the churches y'all go to. Klinton, you, others...there's this 'when I was a little boy' trama that's just so foreign. Fire...brimstone...fire...brimstone...is that all you guys heard? Because I suppose that's what would turn me off too.

Mormon-Baptist-all kinds of Orthodox. Thats what I was growing up. I was told by each religion that the other was wrong and I was wrong (and likely going to hell) for being a part of that religion. To me that is the religions trying to control my by fear. I see it as one giant pissing match with no winners. I can see if I was one religion growing up I would have a different view but thats not how it happened.

I have noticed a difference between Southern Catholics and...others. I saw this at UF, where people came from different states. Outside of the South, being Catholic is a culture and a social symbol. Sort of like being Jewish.

Thats how people are with everything not just religion. Everyone wants to be part of something bigger. I'm not saying its a bad thing but its not something I necessarily agree with. I just think people should be seen as who they are and not as what group they belong to.

Quote:

I had a roommate that decided she would only marry a Catholic and she would only have a Catholic wedding with a full Mass. I asked why, because she never even set her foot in a church during Easter, and she got real pissed.

That might be the one thing worse than the "christians" that only go to church for easter and christmas.

but let's just say my kids are going to public school just like their mamma.

If I ever trick a woman into having kids with me I'll seriously consider sending them to a religious school. They still teach morals at those schools, something that is lacking at public schools. Maybe having them attend each for a couple years would be better than one or the other.

I think every time I've heard that its been from a Baptist or mormon girl.

That is something I wish every religious person did.

I do the same thing. I might not be religious but I do think there is a god somewhere that looks after us. I don't know if praying helps but it does help calm me and deal with the situation better.

I'm not anti-group and I didn't try to come off as that, I just don't see the point of joining something if you don't need to. I'm just interested in what others think of it.

the best answer (for now) is found here, in discussion form:
http://www.rkmbs.com/showflat.php/Number/837447#837447

I might make a comic about what constitutes Emo because there seems to be a lot of confusion with people outside the indyrawk/underground/sockfucker scenes.
