actually JLE when it started, was much different in tone to JLI (which had become mostly humor). JLE started up with a real serious story that had the team splitting up into smaller groups (ala old skool JLA) and was more straight superhero with flashes of humor.
it actually kept that different tone for probably the first year or two. The Extremists arc especially was pretty heavy, being mired only by the silly ending.
